DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition is available as a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 edition, released September 24, 2026. It keeps the Definitive Edition’s story and added content, while offering a choice between publisher-listed 1440p/30fps graphics priority and 1080p/60fps performance priority. The key catch for Switch owners: the Switch 2 edition is separate, and saves do not transfer.
What is different about the Nintendo Switch 2 version?
Nintendo lists a dedicated Switch 2 edition that can only be played on Switch 2. Its main change is a choice of optimisation modes: prioritise graphics or prioritise performance. Square Enix specifies the modes as follows:
| Mode | Official specification | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Quality Priority | 1440p/30fps, according to Square Enix’s official FAQ, reviewed October 3, 2026 | Players who prefer the higher listed resolution over the higher frame rate |
| Performance Priority | 1080p/60fps, according to Square Enix’s official FAQ, reviewed October 3, 2026 | Players who prefer the higher listed frame rate over the higher resolution |
These are Square Enix’s published specifications, not independent measurements. They do not establish image quality, frame pacing, loading times, or battery life. Nintendo describes the new options as modes that let players prioritise graphics or performance.
Does the Switch 2 edition keep the Definitive Edition content?
Yes. Nintendo says the Switch 2 edition contains the content added in the original Definitive Edition, and Square Enix says the story and content are the same across versions. The package retains the expanded adventure rather than presenting a different story.

What is the difference between the Nintendo Switch™ version and the Nintendo Switch™ 2 version?
The original Switch release and the dedicated Switch 2 edition are distinct versions. Nintendo says the original Switch version is supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with its performance on Switch; it does not become the Switch 2 edition simply by running on the newer console. The new priority modes are listed for the dedicated Switch 2 edition, not the original version.
| Decision point | Original Nintendo Switch edition | Nintendo Switch 2 edition |
|---|---|---|
| Where it plays | Playable on Switch; Nintendo says it is supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Switch. | Only compatible with Switch 2, according to Nintendo. |
| Graphics and performance modes | The Switch 2 product page does not list the new priority modes for this version. | Quality Priority and Performance Priority modes; Square Enix lists 1440p/30fps and 1080p/60fps, respectively. |
| Story and content | Definitive Edition content. | Retains the content added in the Definitive Edition; Square Enix says story and content are the same across versions. |
| Upgrade and saved progress | Nintendo says no upgrade pack is planned; its saves are incompatible with the Switch 2 edition. | A separate edition; it does not accept save data from the Switch version. |
Can I transfer save data from the Nintendo Switch™ version to the Nintendo Switch™ 2 version?
No. Nintendo and Square Enix say save data cannot transfer between the Switch and Switch 2 versions. If you move to the dedicated edition, plan to start a new game rather than continue your existing Switch save.

Should you get the Switch 2 edition?
The dedicated edition makes the most sense for someone starting the game on Switch 2 who wants to choose between the officially listed resolution and frame-rate targets. Existing Switch owners should weigh those modes against buying the game again and losing access to their current save in the new edition: Nintendo says there are no plans for an upgrade pack.
If you are content with the original Switch version, Nintendo’s title-specific listing says it remains playable on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Switch. Nintendo’s general compatibility guidance notes that support can vary by game, so check the listing for this title rather than assuming every Switch game behaves the same way.
