DRAGON QUEST XI S: a companion-focused journey
XI S follows the Luminary and his companions as they face forces threatening Erdrea. Its framing puts a central hero and an ensemble of allies at the heart of the adventure. The Definitive Edition also includes character-specific scenarios, offering additional perspectives on members of that group. Square Enix’s official XI S product page describes the adventure and its features.
DRAGON QUEST III: a classic quest
III HD-2D Remake follows Ortega’s child, who takes up the quest to defeat Baramos. Square Enix describes it as a reimagining of the beloved beginning of the Erdrick Trilogy. Its story premise is more directly framed as a hero’s quest than XI S’s companion-centered setup. The PlayStation product page summarizes the premise.

Which game fits your preferences?
- Pick XI S if a story with a named central hero and companions is the bigger draw, or if you value having 2D mode and an orchestral soundtrack option.
- Pick III HD-2D Remake if you prefer a classic quest premise retold in a pixel-art-and-3D style, and want the listed battle-speed and auto-battle options.
- Decide by platform only after checking the edition. Both games span multiple platforms, but availability and graphical presentation vary. The feature descriptions do not establish that either game is universally better, longer, or easier.
What should you check before buying?
DRAGON QUEST XI S: platform and edition notes
Square Enix’s XI S FAQ covers Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Game Pass, Steam, and Epic Games Store. It says content is the same across those versions, while graphical quality varies. On Switch 2, the FAQ lists Performance Priority Mode at 1080p/60fps and Quality Priority Mode at 1440p/30fps. Those are the FAQ’s stated modes and specifications, not a promise that every platform presents the game identically.
The same FAQ says an existing PS4 copy of the original DRAGON QUEST XI cannot be upgraded to XI S. The PS4 version of XI S is compatible with PS5, so check that the listing is specifically for the Definitive Edition you intend to buy.

DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake: platform and edition notes
Square Enix announced III for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Windows and Steam, with release on 14 November 2024. Its announcement gives the platforms and release date. The official FAQ says content is the same across versions, though graphics differ by platform. It also says physical and downloadable editions have no content differences; Steam and Microsoft Store versions are digital only.
The FAQ notes a Switch 2 graphics/performance update. Because platform support and storefront availability can change, check the current product listing for your region and hardware before purchase.
