Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman reduces incoming physical damage by 20% in PvE and 5% in PvP. You obtain it from a chest in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, by following the route from the Drainage Channel Site of Grace across roots and rooftops to a church’s upper interior. It is the strongest base-game Dragoncrest defensive talisman, but it only helps against physical damage.

What the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman does

The Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman reduces incoming physical damage by 20% in PvE and 5% against players in PvP, according to current item data. It is the strongest member of the base-game Dragoncrest Shield talisman family and is one of the most useful defensive talismans for late-game fights where physical attacks are the main threat.

It does not reduce magic, fire, lightning, or holy damage, and it does not improve guard boost. The similarly named Greatshield Talisman is a different item with a different effect.

Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman location

You can find the talisman in a chest in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, near the Drainage Channel Site of Grace. It is not sitting in a chest immediately beside the Site of Grace: reaching it requires crossing roots and building structures, climbing onto a church roof, and dropping into the building’s upper interior.

Step-by-step route from Drainage Channel

  1. Start at the Drainage Channel Site of Grace in Elphael.
  2. Exit the area and follow the nearby tree roots and branches toward the surrounding building buttresses and the church.
  3. Continue across the exterior route until you can climb onto the church roof.
  4. Look for the opening in the roof and drop through it onto the rafters or upper platform inside.
  5. Defeat the nearby Pest enemies on the upper platform. They can interrupt you while you are trying to reach the chest, so clearing them first makes the pickup safer.
  6. Open the chest on the upper level to collect the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman.

Elphael is part of the Haligtree route, so this is a late-game acquisition. The talisman is in the Drainage Channel section of Elphael—not in the Haligtree’s initial approach and not near Malenia’s arena.

Effect and damage types

Mode Listed physical-damage reduction
PvE 20%
PvP 5%

The important distinction is the damage type, not simply whether an attack comes from a weapon. The talisman is designed for incoming physical damage. It is valuable against many weapon strikes and other attacks categorized as physical, but it is not a universal reduction to every hit in the game.

The 20% figure is best understood as the talisman’s listed physical damage-negation effect. It should not be read as a promise that every attack will always deal exactly 20% less final damage after armor, other negation effects, attack properties, and game calculations are taken into account.

In PvP, the listed value is only 5%, not 20%. Do not carry the PvE number into player combat.

Dragoncrest talisman comparison

The Dragoncrest family has four relevant base-game versions. Their listed physical-negation values are:

Talisman PvE physical negation PvP physical negation
Dragoncrest Shield Talisman 10% 2%
Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +1 13% 3%
Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +2 17% 4%
Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman 20% 5%

Although it functions as the family’s top tier, its name is Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman, not “Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +3.” The four versions are mutually exclusive: you cannot equip the base talisman, +1, +2, and Greatshield versions together to stack their effects.

Is Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman worth using?

Usually, yes—when physical damage is the main danger. A 20% PvE physical-negation effect is a substantial defensive benefit for a single talisman slot, particularly in late-game areas where ordinary attacks can remove a large portion of a health bar.

It is especially useful for:

  • Melee builds that spend most fights within striking range.
  • Players learning difficult encounters who want more tolerance for missed rolls or mistimed positioning.
  • Low-Vigor or lightly armored builds that need additional physical protection.
  • Challenge runs where surviving one extra physical hit matters more than maximizing damage.
  • Late-game exploration in areas where ordinary enemies rely heavily on physical attacks.

It is less compelling when the encounter’s most dangerous attacks are elemental or status-based. If a boss’s key threats are magic, fire, lightning, holy damage, or a status effect, another defensive talisman may address the actual problem more directly. The same applies when your build urgently needs an offensive, stamina, equip-load, or utility talisman instead.

A practical way to choose

  • Take Dragoncrest Greatshield when repeated physical hits are causing most of your deaths.
  • Choose elemental protection instead when the largest incoming damage is magic, fire, lightning, or holy.
  • Choose status-related utility instead when buildup, rather than raw physical damage, is ending attempts.
  • Keep another talisman ready if the encounter changes between phases or if your damage and stamina requirements are more important than general physical defense.

The talisman is a strong general-purpose physical-defense slot, but “best talisman” is matchup-dependent rather than an absolute ranking.

Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman versus Greatshield Talisman

These names are easy to confuse:

Item Effect What it does not do
Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman Reduces incoming physical damage Does not improve guard boost
Greatshield Talisman Improves guarding performance Is not the 20% physical-damage-negation talisman

The Greatshield Talisman is a separate item found elsewhere in Altus Plateau. If you are searching for the talisman associated with the 20% PvE physical-negation effect, use the complete name Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman.

Patch and version notes

Bandai Namco’s official Patch 1.04 notes said that the effect of the Greatshield Talisman was decreased for weapons with a high block rate. That change concerns the separate talisman’s interaction with blocking equipment. It should not be described as removing or directly changing the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman’s listed 20% PvE physical-damage-negation effect.

Version 1.16.1, dated August 21, 2025, is the latest named Elden Ring patch shown in the official news listing used for this guide. A later file update was identified without corresponding official patch notes, so there is not enough evidence here to claim that the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman’s values changed after Version 1.16.1.

For players who want a physical map reference

The Haligtree route is easy to lose track of because the item path uses roots, rooftops, buttresses, and interior rafters rather than a straightforward corridor. If you prefer a paper reference while exploring late-game areas, the Elden Ring official strategy guide series is a relevant companion. Future Press describes Elden Ring – Books of Knowledge, Volume I: The Lands Between as a 512-page hardcover reference covering the world, dungeons, NPCs, mechanics, and maps, with a world-map poster and bookmark ribbon. Availability and pricing can change, so check the current listing before buying. The guide is a broader game reference; it is not a separate physical Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman.

Legendary Talismans achievement

Community item documentation identifies the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman as one of the eight talismans associated with Elden Ring’s Legendary Talismans achievement or trophy. That makes it relevant not only as a defensive option but also to completionists collecting the game’s legendary talismans.
