How to choose armor in Dragon’s Dogma 2
Start with your progression stage. Gear available before the first-run ending is a practical choice while exploring the main story; Dragonforged equipment is an endgame option that requires Wyrmslife Crystals. Then compare each piece’s physical and magick defense, and factor in whether it is sold for gold, purchased with crystals, or found in the world.

Fighter armor
Before the first-run ending
Prima recommends Fiendish Armet (80 Defense, 34 Magick Defense; 34,600 G), Thrasher’s Surcoat (176 Defense, 70 Magick Defense; 54,200 G), and Vigilant Greaves (116 Defense, 45 Magick Defense; 35,800 G). The guide lists Volcanic Island Armory as the location for all three.

It also names Knightly Brigandine and Vanguarder’s Greaves as alternatives obtainable for gold or found in the world. PCGamesN’s April 2, 2024 guide instead pairs Subjugator’s Sallet and Stygian Omen with Executioner’s Greaves. These lists differ, so compare the pieces’ defenses and how you can obtain them rather than treating either as a definitive ranking.
Mage armor

Prima lists Solar Ascension (55 Defense, 85 Magick Defense), Ares Morpho Robe (115 Defense, 162 Magick Defense), and Braided Boots (85 Defense, 75 Magick Defense) as its pre-endgame choices.

Endgame
Prima names Cleric’s Hood, Sacral Robe, and Runic Gaiters. PCGamesN’s endgame examples are Cleric’s Hood, Sacral Robe, and Scholar’s Breeches. The shared hood and robe appear in both lists, while the leg armor differs.
Recommendations for the other vocations
Prima’s guide also has vocation-specific recommendations for Thief, Archer, Warrior, Sorcerer, Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, and Trickster, with item tables and acquisition locations. PCGamesN’s endgame list independently covers the same broader set of vocations. For example, its Magick Archer picks are Ancient Galea, Resonance Armor, and Strider’s Greaves. Neither of the two cited guides provides a dedicated Warfarer armor recommendation. Their lists cover nine other vocations, so they do not establish which armor is best for Warfarer or whether a particular set maximizes a chosen defense goal.
