Capcom acknowledged on March 21, 2024—one day before Dragon’s Dogma 2’s PC launch—that crowded areas could place unusually heavy demands on the CPU and reduce frame rates. The company said future performance improvements were planned, but it did not announce a specific patch date or guarantee that every PC performance problem would be solved.
What Capcom acknowledged
The launch-period issue was most noticeable in towns and other areas containing many characters. Capcom explained that simulating individual characters and calculating their physical presence could create unusually high CPU usage, particularly when large numbers of NPCs were on screen.
That meant a PC could meet the game’s listed requirements and still experience substantial frame-rate drops in crowded locations. It does not mean every performance complaint had the same cause, however. A player may be GPU-limited in the wilderness and CPU-limited in a busy city.

GameSpot’s report quoted Capcom’s explanation and its statement that performance improvements were being worked on.

No confirmed “soon” date
“Soon” should not be read as a confirmed release schedule. The cited Capcom statement did not provide a day, week, or patch number. Contemporary coverage described an upcoming fix or future performance work, but there was no confirmed promise that a day-one update would eliminate the CPU problem.
This is therefore a March 2024 launch story, not evidence that a fix is currently imminent. Any claim about the game’s present performance requires separately verified patch notes or current testing; the original announcement alone cannot establish that the issue is fixed.
Why lowering graphics settings may not be enough
Performance problems can be divided broadly into two categories:

- GPU-limited performance: Lowering resolution, ray tracing, texture quality, or other visual settings can reduce the graphics processor’s workload and improve frame rates.
- CPU-limited performance: If the processor is occupied with character simulation and other game logic, reducing visual quality may have little effect.
Capcom indicated that settings which reduce GPU load might help only to a limited extent with this particular issue. A powerful graphics card will not necessarily produce high frame rates if the CPU is the limiting component. Players should therefore check GPU utilization and individual CPU-core usage rather than assuming that a GPU upgrade is the answer.
How to identify the likely bottleneck
- Check whether the largest drops occur in cities or other NPC-heavy areas.
- Watch whether GPU utilization falls during the slowdown while one or more CPU cores remain heavily loaded.
- Test a lower resolution or upscaling preset. A large improvement suggests the GPU is contributing to the limitation; little change points more strongly toward the CPU or game simulation.
- Compare the PC with Steam’s requirements, while remembering that the listed estimates are only 30fps-class targets and allow drops in demanding scenes.
- Close CPU-heavy recording software, browsers, overlays, RGB utilities, and monitoring tools before testing again.
Official PC requirements and expectations
Steam lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit, 16GB of RAM, and the following hardware guidance:

Steam describes the minimum estimate as 1080p at 30fps, with possible drops in graphics-intensive scenes. The recommended estimate is 2160i at 30fps. Ray tracing requires substantially stronger hardware, listed as an RTX 2080 Ti or Radeon RX 6800.

These figures are not a promise of locked performance, and meeting the recommended specification does not guarantee 60fps in crowded areas. See the official Steam support page for the listed requirements and support links.
Official configuration reset
Capcom provides a reset procedure for cases where demanding settings contribute to startup or performance problems. It does not claim to remove the underlying CPU simulation bottleneck.
- Exit Dragon’s Dogma 2.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Local Files, then choose Browse Local Files.
- Rename
config.initoconfig_backup.ini. - Copy
config_default.ini. - Rename the copy to
config.ini. - Launch the game again.
The procedure restores the default configuration, so custom settings may need to be reapplied afterward. Capcom’s instructions are available on its official support page.

What players should do while waiting
If the GPU is clearly saturated, reduce ray tracing, resolution, or other GPU-heavy settings and use a moderate upscaling preset. If the slowdown occurs mainly in crowded areas with low GPU utilization, those changes may produce little improvement.
It is also reasonable to verify the game files through Steam if crashes or corrupted-install symptoms are present. A configuration reset is appropriate after aggressive settings changes or startup problems. Neither measure should be presented as a guaranteed solution to Capcom’s CPU-related issue.

Unofficial suggestions such as changing process priority, killing NPCs, installing third-party configuration packs, or using registry-cleaning utilities are not confirmed fixes from Capcom and should be treated cautiously.

Should you buy or wait?
Players who require a stable 60fps experience, especially in cities, should wait for a dated official update and independent testing before deciding that the problem has been resolved. Players comfortable with Steam’s 30fps-class estimates may have different expectations, provided their hardware meets the requirements.
A new GPU should not be the default recommendation for a CPU-bound slowdown. A faster CPU may help in some systems, but the result depends on the game’s engine behavior, processor performance, and scene complexity. There is no evidence in the launch statement that buying a particular component guarantees a fix.
The bottom line
Capcom did acknowledge that Dragon’s Dogma 2 could become CPU-limited when many characters were present and said performance improvements were planned. But the March 2024 statement supplied no patch date, no guarantee of a complete fix, and no reason to assume that lowering every graphics setting would solve the problem. Treat the announcement as a dated launch-period acknowledgment, and judge any later status by specific official updates rather than by the word “soon.”
