Dragon’s Dogma 2 can run more slowly in busy towns because the game puts substantial CPU work into NPC behavior and character physics. When many characters are present, the CPU can become the bottleneck; lowering resolution may then do little to improve frame rate. The limit can shift by location, however, so the game is not uniformly CPU-bound.
Why does Dragon’s Dogma 2 run worse in towns?
Capcom has attributed some frame-rate drops to the work required to simulate characters. A Capcom representative told IGN, in a statement quoted by PC Gamer on March 21, 2024, that CPU usage is allocated to each character and dynamically calculates the effects of their physical presence. When numerous characters appear simultaneously, CPU usage can become very high and affect frame rate.
The development team later described the same mechanism in an interview with Famitsu, quoted by Automaton West on October 18, 2024: the CPU processes NPC “thoughts” as well as character physics. In scenes with many NPCs, such as towns, that workload can rise enough to affect performance. The team said that when the CPU was the bottleneck, GPU-focused steps such as lowering resolution had little effect.
How much can location change performance?
GamersNexus found a meaningful difference between populated areas and open terrain in its April 1, 2024 investigation. These are averages from specific test scenes and hardware, not expected results for every player or a measurement of current post-update performance.

GamersNexus’ benchmark report found its city testing CPU-limited, while its wilderness testing was more GPU-limited. That distinction matters: the same system can encounter different constraints as the scene changes, and a result from one location does not describe the whole game.
Will lowering resolution fix town frame-rate drops?
It might help when the GPU is the limiting component, but it is not a dependable fix for a CPU-limited town scene. Lower resolution reduces the GPU’s rendering work; it does not remove the CPU work of simulating characters. If a resolution change barely affects frame rate in a crowded area, that is consistent with a CPU bottleneck, though it does not by itself identify a specific hardware upgrade as the answer.

For the same reason, a GPU purchase should not be treated as a proven fix for town slowdowns. The cited developer explanation specifically says GPU-related changes such as lowering resolution may have little effect when CPU load is the constraint.
How to tell which limit you are hitting
- Choose a repeatable comparison. Compare a town scene with an open area, returning to the same spots and conditions as closely as possible.
- Record the setup. Note the game version, platform, resolution, graphics settings, frame rate, and frame-time behavior for each scene.
- Change one GPU-focused setting. Try a lower resolution or graphics detail level, then repeat the same scene. A small change in town but a larger change in the open area can indicate that the limiting component shifts by location.
- Check the game version before comparing results. Older benchmark figures may not reflect later patches; do not treat them as current measurements without matching version, hardware, settings, and scene.
This comparison can help distinguish a scene-related CPU limit from a GPU limit, but it is not a diagnosis of every system. The 2024 test results are controlled observations from GamersNexus, not a population-wide measure of player performance.

What changed with the September 2026 update?
Windows Central reported that Capcom released Title Update 3.2 on September 2, 2026, revised PC minimum and recommended specifications, and listed maximum frame rates of 60 fps on Xbox Series X and 45 fps on Xbox Series S with FSR. These are update details reported by Windows Central; the revised PC specifications and the console ceilings were not independently verified here. The 2024 PC benchmarks above should not be read as post-update results, and no conclusion about current PC performance follows from the reported specification changes alone.
Accordingly, older explanations of the CPU workload remain useful for understanding why crowds can affect performance, but exact current results depend on patch, platform, hardware, and scene. The available evidence does not establish a universal hardware prescription or a guaranteed fix.
