One reported buying location is Dusty Pontoon, north of Gale Cliffs, where a 2023 guide listed it for $500. Some dredging spots are behind destructible barriers, so bring explosives when needed.
How to get Refined Metal
There are two base-game routes: search for Refined Metal while dredging, or purchase it from the Travelling Merchant. Dredging sites are rare and are usually single-use; they are typically behind destructible walls, though not every source requires explosives. The game-mechanics guide describes these spots at DREDGE Guide, while the item overview is on the DREDGE Wiki.

Explore and dredge blocked locations
Watch for dredging spots as you travel, including areas blocked by destructible barriers. If a barrier prevents access, explosives may be needed to clear it. These sites are scarce, and a spot is usually usable only once, so explore carefully rather than expecting a reliable repeat source.
Buy from the Travelling Merchant
PC Gamer reported Refined Metal for sale at the Travelling Merchant’s Dusty Pontoon stop, north of Gale Cliffs, at a listed price of $500. That report was published April 3, 2023, so treat the price and availability as a guide rather than a guarantee of current stock. Check the merchant’s inventory in your game before planning around the purchase: no verified stock schedule is established. PC Gamer’s location guide gives the reported waypoint and price.

Which route should you use?
| Route | Cost and availability | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Dredging | No purchase price stated; sites are rare and usually single-use. | Requires finding a spot. Some are behind destructible barriers that may require explosives. |
| Travelling Merchant | PC Gamer listed $500 at Dusty Pontoon in its April 3, 2023 guide; current stock timing is not verified. | Convenient if the item is available and you have enough money. |
| Tier 2 Foundry crafting | Two Ironhaven Crates and $25 per Refined Metal, according to the item reference. | Requires The Iron Rig DLC and progression to the tier 2 Foundry; this is not a base-game route. |
Where to use Refined Metal
Take Refined Metal to a Dry Dock to spend it on ship upgrades. The Travelling Merchant’s Floating Dock provides the same upgrade function, so buying the material from the merchant can also put you near a place to apply it. See the DREDGE Wiki’s Dry Dock reference and the GameFAQs PS5 walkthrough’s Dry Dock section for the dock and upgrade context.
The item description reproduced by the DREDGE Wiki calls it “A solid sheet of rust free metal. This could be used to seriously improve any vessel.” In practice, it is a ship-upgrade material.
Rank #2
- DREDGE is a singleplayer fishing adventure with a sinister undernurent
- ERASE A MYGICE: Captain your fishing coach across a collection of remote islands, each with its own uninhabited to meet, wildlife to emerge, and stories about growing
- Drive depths: Scour the sea for hidden solutions and complete quests to provide access to new abilies
- Explore your craft: Research special equipment and upgrade your boat capabilities to provide access to rare fish and worthy deep-sea trips
Optional route with The Iron Rig
If you own The Iron Rig DLC and have reached the tier 2 Foundry, the item reference lists crafting Refined Metal for two Ironhaven Crates and $25. This offers another way to obtain it later in that DLC’s progression; it does not replace the exploration and merchant options for the base game.
