Dual-GPU Gaming After NVIDIA Ended SLI Driver Profiles

Yes, two NVIDIA GPUs can still help with gaming in a title that explicitly implements multi-GPU rendering—but an SLI bridge alone will not make a game use both cards. NVIDIA stopped adding new driver-managed SLI profiles for RTX 20 Series and earlier GPUs on January 1, 2021. The result is that dual-GPU gaming is now a compatibility project, not a broadly supported upgrade path.

What NVIDIA’s SLI policy change actually means

NVIDIA’s 2021 support statement said it would no longer add new SLI driver profiles for RTX 20 Series and earlier GPUs beginning January 1, 2021. It also said existing profiles would continue to be tested and maintained for SLI-ready cards in those generations. So the change did not instantly disable every older SLI setup; it ended new profile support, while leaving some already-profiled configurations supported.

Those profiles were NVIDIA’s way of enabling SLI in compatible games through driver support. NVIDIA said the newer graphics APIs DirectX 12 and Vulkan let developers implement multi-GPU rendering natively in a game instead. That shifts responsibility from NVIDIA’s driver team to the game developer: if the developer does not build and support multi-GPU rendering, the driver cannot make the game use both cards through a new SLI profile.

Can you still use two NVIDIA GPUs for gaming?

Physically installing two GPUs is possible on a compatible motherboard and system, but that alone does not mean a game will render across both. The deciding factor is the game’s own support. A second card may provide no gaming benefit when the title lacks a native multi-GPU implementation, even if both cards are installed and connected correctly.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 3050 6GB GDDR6 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card
  • NVIDIA Ampere Streaming Multiprocessors: The all-new Ampere SM brings 2X the FP32 throughput and improved power efficiency.
  • 2nd Generation RT Cores: Experience 2X the throughput of 1st gen RT Cores, plus concurrent RT and shading for a whole new level of ray-tracing performance.
  • 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. These cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilities.
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure.
  • OC Mode : 1500 MHz (Boost Clock)/Default Mode : 1470 MHz (Boost Clock)

There is no authoritative current count of games with native multi-GPU rendering established here, so compatibility should be checked for the specific game and configuration rather than assumed from an old SLI list or from the presence of a bridge.

Does RTX 3090 SLI work in modern games?

The GeForce RTX 3090 is the notable exception in NVIDIA’s policy wording: it remained SLI-capable, but NVIDIA said SLI would be supported only when implemented natively within the game. That makes support title-specific; owning two RTX 3090 cards does not guarantee that a particular modern game can use them together.

NVIDIA’s RTX launch documentation described NVLink as a high-bandwidth interconnect for compatible multi-GPU configurations, with bandwidth of up to 100 GB/s. That is a vendor-published maximum, not a promise of a particular gaming result. NVLink provides a connection between supported cards; it does not add multi-GPU code to a game.

Is an NVLink bridge enough?

No. The bridge addresses hardware connectivity, while native game support addresses whether the game can use both GPUs. Both conditions matter for an NVLink-connected SLI setup: compatible hardware and a game that implements multi-GPU rendering for that configuration. Buying a bridge without verifying the game’s support risks paying for a connection that produces no gaming benefit.

One faster GPU or two older cards?

For most players choosing an upgrade, one stronger GPU is the simpler option because it does not depend on a game supporting multi-GPU rendering. Compare the practical trade-offs before buying:

Consideration One faster GPU Two-GPU SLI setup
Game compatibility Does not require native multi-GPU support. Depends on the specific game implementing multi-GPU rendering.
Frame-time consistency Does not introduce multi-GPU coordination as a requirement. Performance and frame pacing depend on the game’s implementation; a second card does not guarantee a smoother result.
Power and heat One card’s power and cooling requirements. Two cards add hardware to power and cool; check the system’s capacity before building.
Driver support Uses the card’s ordinary driver support. Older SLI relies on existing profiles; RTX 3090 SLI relies on native support in the game.
Cost and ownership risk Compare the price and warranty of the single card you are considering. Account for both cards and any required compatible bridge, as well as the cost and risk of replacing or repairing two older cards.

NVIDIA claimed up to 2× real-time ray-tracing performance for RTX 30 Series over the preceding Turing generation in its September 2020 launch announcement. That is a vendor claim about a generational comparison, not a direct benchmark of one card against two SLI cards. NVIDIA also reported more than 130 games and applications supporting RTX acceleration technologies in 2021; that figure describes RTX support, not native multi-GPU support. Neither claim establishes that a particular SLI pair will outperform a single card in the games you play.

What to check before buying a second card

  • Confirm that the exact game supports native multi-GPU rendering, and check the game developer’s current documentation.
  • Verify that both GPUs and the motherboard support the required configuration and interconnect.
  • Check power supply capacity, case space, cooling, and whether the added hardware is worth the cost for the games you play.
  • Compare the total cost and reliability of a two-card setup with a single-GPU upgrade; do not assume that a bridge or two installed GPUs will increase frame rates.
