Dune: Awakening is more than a film-scene retelling: it is an open-world survival game built around Arrakis, with crafting, base-building, combat, exploration and a cinematic story. Its full single-player mode and adjustable settings, now available alongside multiplayer, widen its appeal. But the survival systems and long progression remain central, so liking Dune alone does not guarantee that its play will suit you.
What kind of Dune game is it?
Funcom’s Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival game set on Arrakis. You gather resources, craft equipment, build strongholds, travel, fight and advance through faction progression while following a story in an alternate Dune timeline. The official premise asks what might have happened if Paul Atreides had never been born: the player investigates the Fremen’s disappearance and rises through either House Atreides or House Harkonnen. The game also draws on the Imperium’s combat schools and lets players craft vehicles, including ornithopters. Funcom’s product page lays out those features.

That scope makes “tie-in” an incomplete description. The game uses Dune’s setting and themes as the foundation for its own survival and progression systems, rather than simply adapting scenes from the films. That is a description of its design, not a measured ranking against other licensed games; no comparative evidence establishes that it is objectively better than the average tie-in.
Can you play Dune: Awakening solo?
Yes. The current offering includes a full single-player mode, private multiplayer servers and public servers. Solo and private-server play include gameplay customization and scalable difficulty, according to the publisher’s September 17, 2026 announcement and the official product listing.

#1 Best Overall
Solo mode does not simply remove the game’s faction objectives. Funcom CMO Erling Ellingsen said rival players are simulated in those objectives for solo play. That means the mode retains systems built around competition, even when you are not playing alongside other people.
Publisher material describes player-versus-player combat as optional. In the Deep Desert endgame, players can choose separate PvE or PvP instances; the PvP instance is described as offering greater risk and reward. Those are the publisher’s descriptions, not independent measurements of how fair, difficult or rewarding those options feel in practice.

Will it suit someone who doesn’t usually play survival games?
The new solo mode and adjustable difficulty make the game more approachable for players who want to focus on its story, but they do not turn it into a conventional action adventure. Gathering, crafting, building and progression are still core parts of the experience. If those systems are what put you off survival games, the settings may ease the demands without removing the genre’s basic rhythm.
In a September 18, 2026 console hands-on, Tom’s Guide writer Kaycee Hill said solo play and adjustable difficulty made the updated game feel suitable for a Dune fan who did not naturally gravitate to survival games. That is one reviewer’s impression, not a guarantee that every reluctant survival-game player will enjoy it.

Funcom Chief Creative Officer Joel Bylos estimated in a GamesRadar+ interview that players could finish the story in “50, maybe 80 hours” if they adjusted settings to make the game easier. Treat that as Bylos’s estimate, not a promised completion time. In the same interview, he acknowledged complaints that the multiplayer endgame was “a little too grindy.” That makes the story and the multiplayer endgame distinct considerations: reaching the end of the narrative does not mean you have exhausted the longer progression systems.
Platforms and console modes
Dune: Awakening is available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The September 2026 publisher announcement says PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X offer a Performance mode targeting 60 fps with Dynamic 4K, and a Quality mode targeting 30 fps with Dynamic 4K. It says PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X have higher native resolution and enhanced visuals in Quality mode. These are announced mode specifications, not independent performance tests; the announcement does not establish the same console-mode details for Xbox Series S.

- From the slow blade to epic firepower, train and progress as a Swordmaster, Bene Gesserit, Trooper, and Mentat to unlock their signature weapons and abilities
- Rise from survival to greatness as you grow your own piece of Arrakis from a modest crafting base into a sprawling fortress, or secure your fortune by chasing spice blows and running your own spice-refining operation
- Play single-player and customize every aspect of your experience, or go online to team up with friends on private or public multiplayer servers
The publisher also confirmed a physical PlayStation 5 edition that includes a disc. Distribution varies by region, so check local listings for availability. Xbox Play Anywhere is described as carrying progression across listed Xbox ecosystem devices and services. Cross-play was announced as planned for after launch; that announcement alone does not confirm its current live status.
The September console release brought additions and improvements made to the PC version over the previous year, including full single-player, extensive gameplay customization and more story content, according to Bandai Namco Europe. The publisher also reported that Funcom recorded 189,000 concurrent Steam players at launch. That is a historical launch-era figure attributed to the publisher, not a current player count.

Who is it for?
- Consider it if: You want to explore Arrakis through a substantial survival game, enjoy building and crafting, or want a Dune story you can play alone with difficulty adjustments.
- Think carefully if: You mainly want a linear story with little resource management, dislike extended progression, or expect the setting alone to carry the experience.
- If PvP is the concern: The publisher describes it as optional and identifies separate PvE and PvP Deep Desert endgame instances. Check current game details if the availability or rules of those modes are decisive for you.
There is also a cosmetic add-on: Filmic Archive, announced by the publisher on September 22, 2026, as a $9.99 pack of film-inspired looks, decorative building pieces, weapons and emotes. That announced price may vary by region or change over time; check the current local listing. It is separate from the core reasons to choose the game.
