Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Heroes of the Borderlands was presented as a way to introduce newcomers to more than a first adventure: its reported design combines several adventure booklets, hands-on character choices, and guidance for new Dungeon Masters. Those are launch-era details reported in March 2025, not confirmation of what is currently in stock or what a box costs.
What is Heroes of the Borderlands?
Heroes of the Borderlands is the name of a Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set revealed by Wizards of the Coast at New York Toy Fair, according to James Whitbrook’s March 5, 2025, Gizmodo report. The report described the set as an introductory experience intended to familiarize beginners with several parts of the game, rather than only getting them through a single adventure.
The set takes inspiration from The Keep on the Borderlands, the classic 1979 D&D adventure, the report said. That connection is a design influence; it does not establish that the new set is a reprint or a direct adaptation of the older adventure.
What was the set reported to include?
The March 2025 report described a physical box of play materials and multiple adventures. It did not provide a complete official product specification.

How does character creation differ from a premade-character approach?
Instead of relying on pre-generated characters, the reported design lets players assemble characters through modular choices. The report described choices involving background, class, equipment, and spells. For a new player, that approach is meant to provide some ownership over a character while introducing pieces of character creation as part of getting started.
That is a different onboarding emphasis from starter products that use ready-made characters or move quickly past character creation. The report does not provide enough detail for a full comparison across editions, nor does it establish the depth of the rules or how long character creation takes.
How does it introduce Dungeon Masters?
The adventure booklets were reported to include guidance for Dungeon Masters on interacting with players and building the game world. The report also said the set would encourage people at the table to take turns in the DM role.

- Embark on EPIC ADVENTURES - Three adventure guides offer dozens of encounters with struggles, social interactions, and exploration.
- Choose your way of playing - Do you fight the goblin, try to talk to him, or do you just sneak by?
This signals an attempt to make the game’s facilitator role part of the introduction, rather than treating the DM as an assumed expert. It is a statement of design intent, however—not evidence that the guidance produces better sessions or that every group will want to rotate DMs.
Is it a good fit for new players?
Its reported features point toward groups that want an introduction to multiple parts of D&D: playing through adventures, making character choices, and learning what a DM does. The modular approach may be appealing if players want to shape a character rather than select a ready-made one; the included DM guidance may matter to a group without an experienced game leader.
