You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because dxwnd.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
- “There was a problem starting dxwnd.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading dxwnd.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because dxwnd.dll was not found.”
- “dxwnd.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Proxy ddraw install failed while copying dxwnd.dll file”

It is not a Windows, DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ system file. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The safest repair is:
- Close DxWnd and the game.
- Download the latest complete DxWnd archive from the official DxWnd project files page on SourceForge.
- Extract the entire archive into a new folder.
- Confirm that
dxwnd.exeanddxwnd.dllare beside each other. - Start the newly extracted
dxwnd.exe. - Rebuild the game profile if the old one no longer works.
Do not download a loose dxwnd.dll from a random DLL website. A standalone file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, or belong to a different DxWnd release.
What usually caused the error
The most likely causes are:
- The DxWnd archive was extracted incompletely.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
dxwnd.exeanddxwnd.dllcame from different releases.- Proxy mode left an old copy in the game folder.
- A game profile or
dxwnd.inifile is no longer compatible. - The target game is 64-bit while the traditional DxWnd build expects a 32-bit target.
- The error names a missing dependency rather than
dxwnd.dllitself. - The game installation is damaged or has been changed by a launcher update.
The location matters. In a normal DxWnd installation, dxwnd.dll should be in the same extracted folder as dxwnd.exe. Proxy mode may intentionally copy a matching DLL into the game directory, but that copy must come from the same DxWnd build.

Fix 1: Extract a complete, matching DxWnd build
This is the best first repair.
- Exit the game.
- Exit DxWnd completely. Check the notification area near the clock and close it there if it remains running.
- Open the official DxWnd project files page on SourceForge.
- Download the latest build shown there.
- Create a new folder, such as
C:ToolsDxWnd. - Extract the complete archive into that folder.
- Open the extracted folder and check that it contains both:
dxwnd.exedxwnd.dll- Start
dxwnd.exefrom this new folder. - Add the game executable again or import its profile.
- Launch the game through DxWnd.
A successful repair normally removes the missing-file message and opens the DxWnd interface or starts the game without the proxy-copy error.
If dxwnd.dll is not present after extraction, the archive was incomplete, blocked, or extracted into a nested folder incorrectly. Extract the archive again with all files preserved rather than downloading the DLL separately.
Fix 2: Remove stale and mismatched copies
A newer dxwnd.exe can fail when it loads an older dxwnd.dll. Proxy mode can also leave a copy in the game folder that is loaded before the copy beside dxwnd.exe.
- Close DxWnd, the game, and any game launcher.
- Open the folder containing
dxwnd.exe. - Confirm that
dxwnd.dllis in that same folder. - Open the game’s installation folder.
- Look for a manually copied
dxwnd.dll,ddraw.dll, or other DxWnd proxy files. - Do not delete files blindly. Move obsolete DxWnd-related files into a temporary backup folder outside the game directory.
- Start the game normally once to confirm whether the unmodified game launches.
- Reopen the newly extracted DxWnd.
- If proxy mode is required, install the proxy again using files from that same build.
- Reboot Windows before retrying if the old DLL may still be loaded or locked.
Do not run DxWnd and a manually installed proxy at the same time. Double hooking can create startup failures, crashes, or unexplained entry-point errors.
Fix 3: Rebuild the DxWnd profile
Old .dxw profiles and dxwnd.ini settings may not remain compatible after an update.
- Open the new DxWnd folder.
- Start the new
dxwnd.exe. - Create a fresh profile for the game.
- Select the actual game executable, not a launcher shortcut unless the launcher is the intended target.
- Apply only the settings needed for the game.
- Test the profile.
- If it works, add older compatibility settings one at a time.
If a fresh profile works but the imported profile does not, the DLL is probably repaired and the remaining problem is an outdated configuration.

Fix 4: Check whether the game is 32-bit or 64-bit
A 64-bit version of Windows can run DxWnd, but the traditional DxWnd build is intended for 32-bit target applications. A 64-bit game generally cannot be hooked by that traditional build.
To check the game architecture:
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main game
.exe. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and note any architecture information shown.
- If no useful information appears, check the game’s official documentation or publisher support page.
- Check whether the launcher offers separate 32-bit and 64-bit executables.
If the target is 64-bit, do not try to solve the problem by copying more DLLs. Use a 32-bit version of the game where one is officially available, or choose a modern compatibility tool designed for 64-bit targets.
The operating system’s architecture is not the deciding factor. The target game executable is.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and permissions
Security software may remove or block a hook DLL, particularly when it is copied into a game folder.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
dxwnd.dllor the DxWnd folder. - Confirm that the archive came from the official DxWnd project files page.
- If the source is trusted and the detection is understood, use the available restore option.
- If the file is genuinely identified as malware or the source is uncertain, do not restore it. Download a fresh archive from the official project instead.
Only add a narrowly scoped exclusion after verifying the archive’s source. Avoid excluding the entire system drive or broad game-library locations.
Check permissions and file locking
- Move DxWnd temporarily to a simple folder such as
C:ToolsDxWnd. - Move the game to a location where your account has write access if practical.
- Close launchers, overlays, mod managers, and recording utilities.
- Right-click
dxwnd.exeand select Run as administrator for a test. - Try the proxy installation again.
If running as administrator works, the problem may be permissions or a protected installation folder. It does not mean that permanent administrator use is always required.

Fix 6: Identify a missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that dxwnd.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency used by the DLL.
Read the complete error carefully. If it names MSVCP140.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll, or another Visual C++ runtime file, install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official downloads page.
Use the architecture required by the application:
vc_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit applicationvc_redist.x64.exefor a 64-bit application
A 64-bit Windows installation may need the x86 package for a 32-bit game. Do not install a runtime merely because dxwnd.dll is missing. Repair Visual C++ only when the actual error identifies a Microsoft runtime or the complete DxWnd package still fails after extraction.
Fix 7: Verify the game installation
If DxWnd is repaired but the game still fails, the game may have missing or changed files.

- In Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- In other launchers, look for options named Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- For a disc or manually installed game, reinstall the game from its original installer or trusted publisher source.
Verify the game before copying proxy files into it again. A launcher repair may remove manually installed proxy files, so reinstall the matching DxWnd proxy afterward if required.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only for wider system problems
SFC and DISM are not normal ways to restore dxwnd.dll. The file belongs to DxWnd, not to protected Windows system files.

Use these commands only if Windows itself shows errors, several unrelated applications fail, or system components appear damaged.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- When it finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test DxWnd again.
Microsoft documents DISM and SFC as Windows component and protected-file repair tools. They will not recreate a missing third-party DxWnd DLL.
Repeatedly running these commands without checking which file actually failed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can show what system issues remain before its full version performs repairs, but reinstalling DxWnd remains the definitive fix for a missing dxwnd.dll.
Fix 9: Do not register dxwnd.dll
Do not use this command as a general DLL installation method:
regsvr32 dxwnd.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. There is no public indication that DxWnd’s hook DLL requires COM registration.
Running the command will usually produce a registration error and will not repair a missing, stale, or mismatched DxWnd installation.

Fix 10: Update graphics drivers only when the symptom points there
A graphics-driver update will not normally restore dxwnd.dll. Consider it only when the file is present, DxWnd loads, and the game shows rendering failures, black screens, crashes, or DirectX errors.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the game again.
You can also install the latest driver from the graphics-card manufacturer’s official support channel. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers before its full version installs updates, which avoids hunting through several hardware pages, but it is not a substitute for rebuilding DxWnd when dxwnd.dll is missing.
Windows Features are usually unrelated
Do not enable random Windows features to fix this DLL. Turn Windows features on or off does not install DxWnd.
To inspect the list:
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the list without changing settings.
- Close the window if no separate application requirement identifies a specific feature.
Legacy DirectPlay or older .NET components can matter to some games, but enabling them will not supply dxwnd.dll.

Is dxwnd.dll a Windows system file?
No. It belongs to DxWnd and should not be copied to System32 or SysWOW64.
Where should dxwnd.dll be located?
Normally beside dxwnd.exe in the same complete DxWnd extraction. Proxy mode may place a matching copy in the game folder intentionally.
Can I download only dxwnd.dll?
That is unsafe and unreliable. The DLL must match dxwnd.exe and may depend on other files in the same DxWnd archive.
Why did the error appear after updating DxWnd?
The update may have left an older DLL, incompatible profile, or obsolete proxy copy. Extract the complete build into a new folder and recreate the profile.
