Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, confirm three details:
- Which edition is failing: Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, the demo, or a modded copy?
- Does the message appear when launching the game, after an update, or after replacing files?
- Is the game 32-bit? Max Payne 2 is a 32-bit game, including when it runs on 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11.
The file named e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll belongs to Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne and its demo. It is a private game DLL, not a normal Windows, DirectX, Visual C++, .NET, or graphics-card driver file. The safest repair is to restore it from the same trusted game installation that originally supplied it.

What the error means
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll.”
- “Error loading e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
If the file is absent, the game installation is incomplete, damaged, or altered. If the file is present but Windows says that the specified module cannot be found, a dependency used by the DLL may be missing. If Windows says the DLL is not designed to run on Windows, the file may be corrupt, from the wrong edition, or an incompatible replacement.
The expected location is the game’s own e2driver folder. Do not expect this file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. It is a 32-bit PE/Win32 DLL, so a 32-bit game needs it in the game directory regardless of whether Windows itself is 64-bit.

Fix 1: Verify the Steam installation
For the Steam version, file verification is the quickest and most reliable repair.
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game without adding any mods or wrappers.
Steam compares the local installation with its stored copy and can replace a missing or damaged e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll. Steam may report that some files failed validation because local configuration files can legitimately differ. That is not automatically a sign that verification failed.
Check the result by opening the game’s installation folder and confirming that e2drivere2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll exists. Then launch the game again.
If verification repeatedly restores and then removes the same file, stop there and check antivirus history and installed mods before verifying again.

For a disc, standalone, or older demo installation, reinstall from the original media or a trusted installer for the matching edition.
- Back up saved games and any custom files outside the game directory.
- Uninstall the existing game from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, if it appears there.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the same full game or demo edition again.
- Start the freshly installed copy before applying patches, mods, or graphics wrappers.
Do not copy the DLL from a different release. The full game, demo, regional release, and modified installation may not use identical files. A file taken from another copy can produce a “not designed to run on Windows” message or simply move the failure to a different DLL.
If the installer offers prerequisite components, allow them to install. If it does not, do not assume that downloading an individual DLL is an equivalent repair.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Older game DLLs can be quarantined by antivirus software, particularly after a definition update or when the installation has been modified.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the game directory or
e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll. - Expand the event and record the detection name.
- Confirm that the game came from legitimate installation media or a trusted store.
- Only then consider Restore or Allow on device, if Windows Security presents those choices.
- Run Steam verification, or reinstall from the original installer.
Do not restore a quarantined file merely because its name matches the error. First identify what was detected and confirm the installer’s provenance. If the file is removed again, the antivirus detection needs to be resolved before the game can launch reliably.
Fix 4: Remove mods and graphics wrappers temporarily
A clean installation should contain the original game files. Mods, alternate renderers, and Direct3D wrappers can replace or redirect files in e2driver.

- Max Payne is a man with nothing to lose--a fugitive undercover cop framed for murder, and now hunted by the cops and the mob. As Payne, you'll uncover plot twists, engage in dramatic "bullet-time" firefights with thugs, and fight your way through an unforgiving New York blizzard. Max can wield a variety of weapons including pistols, submachine guns, shotguns, sniper rifles, grenades, and Molotov cocktails. Prepare yourself for an involving story combined with slick action.
Temporarily remove or disable:
- graphics wrappers such as dgVoodoo;
- replacement
e2mfc.dllore2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dllfiles; - unofficial patches;
- DLL files copied into the game folder by a mod installer;
- overlay or injector software.
Keep backups outside the installation directory. Then verify the game files or reinstall it and test the unmodified copy.
If the clean game launches but the modded copy does not, the problem is with the modification or its compatibility instructions. Reapply changes one at a time and keep the original files available for rollback.

Fix 5: Do not install this DLL as a Windows runtime
e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll is not a standard Windows component. It is not normally supplied by:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11;
- Microsoft DirectX as a standalone game file;
- Visual C++ Redistributables;
- .NET;
- a GPU, audio, chipset, or printer driver package.
Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime can install legacy side-by-side DirectX components used by older games. That may help when a separate DirectX dependency is missing, but it will not normally recreate this Max Payne 2 DLL.
Install the DirectX package only from Microsoft and only when the game still reports a Direct3D or legacy-runtime dependency problem after its own files have been restored.

Fix 6: Repair a Direct3D compatibility failure
If e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll exists in e2driver but the game still fails, the missing-file problem may already be solved. Continue with compatibility checks instead of copying the DLL elsewhere.

- Install pending Windows updates through Settings → Windows Update.
- Close overlays and background capture tools.
- Test the game with its original files.
- Run
dxdiag: - Press Windows key + R.
- Type
dxdiag. - Press Enter.
- Review the Display tab for adapter and Direct3D information.
- Record any display-adapter error shown there.
- Apply a reputable compatibility fix only after making a backup of the clean game directory.
Rockstar’s general compatibility guidance also points to current video drivers, Windows updates, reduced background activity, and checking DirectX information with dxdiag.
Updating a legacy game’s graphics environment manually means hunting the correct driver branch, checking whether a wrapper is active, and undoing conflicting overlays. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while the full version handles driver installation; it is optional, and reinstalling Max Payne 2 remains the definitive fix for this game-private DLL.
Fix 7: Check for a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows cannot load a dependency required by the named DLL. It does not always mean the named file itself is absent.
First confirm that:
<Max Payne 2 folder>e2drivere2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll
exists. Then:
- Run Steam verification or reinstall from the original media.
- Look in the game folder for bundled prerequisite installers.
- Install only prerequisites supplied with the trusted game installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the clean game again.
Do not guess at individual runtime DLLs. If the complete error identifies another missing file, investigate that file separately rather than replacing e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 8: Repair Windows components only when other programs are affected
Because this DLL belongs to the game rather than Windows, system repair is not the normal solution. Use it when multiple unrelated applications are failing or Windows itself shows signs of component corruption.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the game.
Microsoft documents the DISM and SFC repair process. These commands repair Windows components and protected system files; they do not recreate a missing game DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the game when the game file itself is missing.
Why System32 and regsvr32 are wrong here
Do not copy this DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The game expects its private DLL in e2driver, and moving it to a system folder can create path conflicts without repairing the installation.
Do not run:
regsvr32 e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE or ActiveX-style DLLs that expose a registration entry point. A private game engine DLL is not repaired by registering it. Microsoft explains the limitation in its regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
Avoid generic DLL download sites sites as well. A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to another edition, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged game installation. Use Steam verification, original media, or the trusted installer that supplied the game.
If the error remains
Collect these details before asking for further help:
- full game or demo edition;
- Steam, disc, or standalone installation source;
- complete error text;
- full path shown in the error;
- whether the file exists under
e2driver; - Windows 10 or Windows 11 version;
- antivirus detection name, if any;
- whether mods, wrappers, or overlays are installed;
- whether a clean, verified installation also fails.
If the file is restored but the game reports a Direct3D or display-adapter error, treat that as a separate compatibility problem. Focus on dependencies, GPU drivers, overlays, permissions, and wrappers rather than Windows registration.
