Short answer: EA’s app is now the official replacement for Origin on Windows PC and Mac. Download the free EA app, sign in with the EA Account that owns your games, and use its Library to install or launch them. You do not need to repurchase games simply because EA changed its launcher.
Steam and Epic Games Store players should also expect an extra EA-app step for PC games that require EA authentication.
What replaced Origin?
Origin was EA’s older PC and Mac storefront and launcher. The EA app is its current replacement. EA’s present download page states that Origin has been replaced on both PC and Mac: EA app download page.
The important distinction is between the launcher and your account:

- EA app: the software used to browse, download, update, and launch supported EA games.
- EA Account: the account holding game entitlements, purchases, subscriptions, and linked platform accounts.
- Steam or Epic: third-party storefronts that may sell EA games but can still hand off authentication or launching to the EA app.
EA began the Windows transition during the 2022 rollout, when it announced that the EA app had left open beta and would replace Origin as its primary PC platform. EA’s current position is no longer that the replacement is merely planned; the EA app is the supported replacement for normal PC and Mac use.
Treat Origin as superseded rather than as an alternative launcher. That change does not guarantee that every older EA game will run perfectly: individual game compatibility, operating-system support, online-service availability, and hardware requirements are separate issues.
How to install the EA app
- Open EA’s official EA app download page.
- Choose Windows or macOS.
- Download and run the installer.
- Sign in with the EA Account associated with your games.
- Open Library, select a game, and choose the download or install option.
- Launch the installed game from the EA app.
The EA app itself is free. The games, downloadable content, and optional memberships are separate purchases.
Supported operating systems
- Windows: Windows 10 or Windows 11 on a minimum 64-bit PC.
- Mac: macOS 10.15.8 or later, described by EA’s consumer information as Catalina or newer.
- Chromebook: not supported.
- Other operating systems: not supported by the EA app.
Launcher support is not the same as game support. Each game can require a newer operating system, additional memory, a particular graphics API, or specific hardware. Mac support for the launcher also does not mean every PC game has a Mac version; Mac users can download only games compatible with Mac. See EA’s installation and update guidance.
Will Origin games and purchases carry over?
Games purchased through EA should appear in the EA app’s Library when you sign in to the correct EA Account. The launcher changed; the account-based entitlement is what determines access. You normally do not need a new account just because you are moving from Origin to the EA app.
However, “carry over” does not mean that every local installation, configuration file, mod, or third-party entitlement will be transferred automatically. Your account must hold the relevant entitlement, and the game must remain compatible with your system.
If a game is missing
EA’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking these possibilities:
- You used the wrong EA Account. Try other email addresses you may have used. Check the account’s payment information and Order history.
- The purchase is still processing. A pending transaction may not immediately create a usable entitlement.
- A retailer code was never redeemed. A game bought from another retailer must be redeemed to the correct EA Account.
- You bought DLC or a subscription rather than the base game. Add-ons do not necessarily appear as separate full-game entries.
- EA Play access expired. A subscription-based game may disappear from playable access when the membership ends unless you own the game separately.

Finding DLC and expansions
EA says full games appear as full-game entries, while add-ons are managed from the base game:
- Open Library.
- Hover over the relevant game.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage add-ons.
If the add-on is still absent, verify that it was purchased or redeemed on the same EA Account and that the base game is installed on the same platform.
Do Steam and Epic users still need the EA app?
Yes, for EA PC games that require it. EA says the EA app is required even when an EA game was obtained through Steam or the Epic Games Store: EA’s EA app requirements.
The usual flow is layered:
- Steam or Epic remains the storefront and the launcher where you start the game.
- The EA app opens for authentication, entitlement verification, updates, or the game launch.
- Your Steam or Epic account must be linked to the correct EA Account.
- The game then starts after both services recognize the entitlement.
Buying an EA game on Steam or Epic therefore does not necessarily remove EA’s launcher requirement. It can be a good choice if you value Steam or Epic libraries and social features, but it is not the right route for someone specifically trying to eliminate a second launcher.

Fix an empty Library or missing game
Work through these steps in order. Reinstalling the launcher first will not fix an entitlement assigned to another account.
1. Confirm the EA Account
Sign out and try other email addresses you may have used. Check Order history, payment information, and the account’s wallet or purchase area. If the game came from a retailer, confirm that its product code was redeemed.
2. Check whether it is an add-on or subscription
Look at the base game’s three-dot menu and choose Manage add-ons. If access came through EA Play, confirm that the membership is still active. EA Play benefits are platform-specific; a membership purchased on one platform does not automatically transfer to another.

3. Restart the EA app
Open the main menu, choose Help, and select Restart app. Sign out and back in if the Library still does not refresh. EA documents this path in its EA app usage guide.
4. Clear the cache
- Open the EA app.
- Select Help.
- Choose App Recovery.
- Select Clear Cache.
On Mac, EA’s helper process may require administrator authentication. Clearing the cache can refresh stale app data, but it cannot create a purchase that belongs to a different account. See EA’s download and installation troubleshooting.
5. Reinstall only later
Reinstalling can help with a damaged launcher installation, but it should be a later step. If the wrong EA Account is signed in, reinstalling will not restore the missing game. Back up local saves and important configuration files before removing software or changing installation locations.
Fix downloads, installation errors, and crashes

EA identifies FAT32 formatting as a possible cause. FAT32 cannot handle individual files larger than 4 GB, so a download can appear to stall at that point. Check the file system of the destination drive; use a suitable supported file system rather than treating this as an account problem.

This can indicate that the EA app lacks permission to write to the selected installation location. Check the destination folder, available storage, drive access, and Windows permissions. Choosing a folder your account can write to may resolve the problem.
Damaged or corrupted installation
In Library, open the game’s management menu and choose Repair. The EA app will check the installation and replace or restore damaged files where possible. This is preferable to immediately downloading the entire game again. EA’s repair and crash guidance covers this workflow.
Crashes or freezes
Close interfering background applications, repair the game, and check whether security software or overlays are involved. If necessary, try a clean boot, then reinstall the game or EA app only after simpler fixes fail. A crash after migration is not automatically evidence that Origin-to-EA ownership failed.
Online connection problems
Check EA’s service-status and connection guidance. Some older games depend on online servers that may have been retired. Replacing Origin with the EA app cannot restore a closed server or bring back an unsupported online mode.

What happens to saves and mods?
Game ownership is controlled through the EA Account and Library, but saves and modifications are a separate local-data issue.
- Back up save folders before uninstalling Origin, reinstalling the EA app, or changing the game’s installation location.
- Save locations vary by game and may be local, cloud-based, or a combination of both.
- Mods, ReShade tools, custom launch options, and third-party utilities may need to be reconfigured after a reinstall or update.
- Do not assume that installing the EA app automatically migrates every save or preserves every mod.
Cloud-save behavior is game-specific, not a universal Origin-to-EA-app guarantee.

The defensible answer is that it is the current supported platform, not that a universal performance verdict has been independently established here.
EA describes the app as offering a streamlined interface and faster access to games. Those are EA’s product claims rather than independent benchmark results. The practical advantages are a current unified EA Library, ongoing support for Windows and Mac, and integration with EA games sold through EA’s store or authenticated through Steam and Epic.

- Cache, permissions, download, repair, and crash problems remain possible.
- Older games can have compatibility or server issues unrelated to the launcher.
- Chromebooks and unsupported operating systems cannot use the EA app.
Should you subscribe to EA Play?
The EA app is free, so a subscription is optional. EA Play provides access to a catalog of EA games, trials of selected new releases, member rewards, and a discount on eligible EA digital purchases. US prices observed on August 16, 2026 were $5.99 per month or $39.99 per year for EA Play, and $16.99 per month or $119.99 per year for EA Play Pro. Prices and availability can change by region and date.
EA Play is most useful if you expect to play several included games or want trials and member discounts. Buying one game is often simpler if that is all you need. EA Play Pro is aimed at players who want its higher-tier PC catalog and new-release editions, but it is a poor fit if you play occasionally or want permanent ownership.
Check the platform before subscribing: EA says memberships are tied to the platform where they were purchased. Benefits do not automatically transfer between PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Epic, and the EA app. See EA’s EA Play FAQ.
What to do now
- Install the EA app from EA’s official website.
- Sign in with the EA Account that owns or redeemed the game.
- Check Library, Order history, and Manage add-ons.
- If a Steam or Epic title requires it, allow the EA app to authenticate the launch.
- Back up saves and mods before uninstalling or moving anything.
- For problems, restart the app, clear its cache, repair the game, and investigate permissions or server status before reinstalling.

Do I need a new EA Account?
