ehitvmsmusic.dll is a legacy Microsoft Windows Media Center assembly, not a normal Visual C++ runtime or DirectX file. Before repairing anything, identify what is requesting it and whether the warning names ehitvmsmusic.dll or ehitvmsmusic.ni.dll.

Check these points:

  1. Which program shows the error? Note the executable name in the dialog, Event Viewer, or Reliability Monitor.
  2. When did it begin? Common triggers include a Windows upgrade, Media Center removal, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, malware removal, or system-file corruption.
  3. Which Windows version is installed? Media Center was mainly a Windows 7-era component. It was not included in Windows 10 and is unavailable in Windows 11.
  4. Where is the file located? The expected legacy location is:

text
%WINDIR%assemblyGAC_MSILehiTVMSMusic6.1.0.0__31bf3856ad364e35ehiTVMSMusic.dll

  1. Does Windows show a Microsoft digital signature? A copy in Downloads, %TEMP%, System32, or an unrelated application folder needs extra scrutiny.
  2. Is the error repeated at startup or only with one old application? A startup-only warning on Windows 10 or 11 often comes from an obsolete Media Center reference rather than a missing modern Windows runtime.

Do not begin by downloading the DLL. Repair the owning Windows component or remove the obsolete program that is requesting it.

What ehitvmsmusic.dll belongs to

The filename is associated with the Windows Media Center and Microsoft TV technology stack. Related assemblies include names such as ehiiTV, ehiWMP, ehiWUapi, ehiUserXp, and ehRecObj. Public assembly records place it in the .NET Global Assembly Cache, or GAC, rather than as an ordinary standalone library in System32.[^1]

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

The reported assembly version is 6.1.0.0. The managed file is accompanied in some installations by a Native Image named ehiTVMSMusic.ni.dll. The .ni.dll file is generated by .NET for native execution; it is not a separate download package. On 64-bit Windows, GAC_MSIL does not mean that the assembly is a 64-bit DLL. Managed assemblies in this location can be processor-neutral, while native images may have separate architecture-specific caches.

Windows Media Center was available in older Windows editions, especially Windows 7 and some Windows 8-era installations. It was removed from Windows 10 and is unavailable in Windows 11. Microsoft’s current Media Feature Pack for Windows 10 and 11 N editions restores media technologies such as Windows Media Player and codecs, but it is not a supported replacement for Windows Media Center or this specific assembly.[^2]

Fix 1: Repair Windows component files automatically

This is the safest first repair when the file genuinely belongs to an older Windows installation and its expected component files are damaged or missing.

Run DISM, then SFC

  1. Press Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  5. Run this command:

bat
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run System File Checker:

bat
sfc /scannow

  1. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses to replace protected Windows files.[^3]

A successful repair may report that corruption was repaired or that no integrity violations were found. After restarting, launch the program that produced the warning. If the error is gone, no manual DLL replacement is needed.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace the example path with the actual repair source. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build. Running SFC again after this DISM repair is appropriate.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the program that requests this file remains the definitive fix when the problem is application-specific.

Review the SFC result if it still fails

If SFC says it could not repair some files:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Open the CBS log in Notepad:

bat
notepad %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

  1. Search for ehiTVMSMusic, Cannot repair, or corrupt.
  2. Do not copy a replacement DLL from a download site based on the log alone.

If DISM and SFC both fail, proceed to the Windows-version and Media Center checks below.

Fix 2: Restore the applicable Media Center feature

This step is mainly for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 systems where Media Center was included, disabled, or removed.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:

text
optionalfeatures

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Expand Media Features if it is listed.
  3. Enable the applicable Media Center or media feature.
  4. Select OK and allow Windows to apply the change.
  5. Restart the computer.

The exact feature list depends on the Windows edition. Windows 7 N and KN editions omitted Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, and related media technologies. Those editions required the matching Microsoft Windows 7 Media Feature Pack rather than a random DLL download.[^4]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Media Center is not listed, do not force the feature by copying files from another computer. Verify the edition first:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:

text
winver

  1. Press Enter and note the Windows release.
  2. For an N or KN edition, install only the Media Feature Pack intended for that Windows release from Microsoft.
  3. Restart and test the original application again.

The modern Windows 10/11 Media Feature Pack is not a standalone Windows Media Center restoration package. Installing it will not recreate the old Media Center assembly on a current non-N edition.

Fix 3: Identify and repair the program that requests the file

If the warning appears only when one old application starts, that application may be calling a legacy Media Center assembly even though Windows itself is not using Media Center.

Check Reliability Monitor

  1. Press Start and search for Reliability Monitor.
  2. Open View reliability history.
  3. Select the red error on the day the warning occurred.
  4. Expand the application failure details.
  5. Record the application name and executable.

You can also check Event Viewer:

  1. Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
  2. Open Windows Logs.
  3. Select Application.
  4. Look for an error at the time of the failure.
  5. Note the faulting application and module.

Then repair the identified program through its own installer:

  3. Select the program.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  5. Select Repair or Reset.
  6. If those options are unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the program.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or installation media.

If it is an old Media Center utility that is no longer needed, uninstalling it and removing its obsolete startup entry is safer than recreating a missing DLL. Back up settings or recordings first if the application still contains data you need.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and the file’s signature

Antivirus software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy. The file’s path matters as much as its name.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Open Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving ehiTVMSMusic.dll or ehiTVMSMusic.ni.dll.
  5. Check the detected file path and action.
  6. Do not restore it immediately.

A file in the expected GAC path is materially different from a similarly named file in Downloads, %TEMP%, or a random application directory. If the file is present, right-click it, open Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. A legitimate Windows component should have verifiable Microsoft signing information, but the file’s presence alone does not prove that it is safe.

If the path or signature is suspicious:

  1. Leave the file quarantined.
  2. Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence.
  3. Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection.
  4. Restart and run the scan again if requested.
  5. Run DISM and SFC after malware cleanup.

If malware has modified an old Windows installation, restoring a quarantined file may reintroduce the problem. Public malware-analysis records show that the legitimate filename can appear in malware-related listings, but that does not make every copy of the file malicious.[^5]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Handle ehiTVMSMusic.ni.dll errors differently

Read the filename carefully. An error naming ehiTVMSMusic.ni.dll may concern a damaged or stale .NET Native Image cache rather than the original managed assembly.

Do not download or manually copy a .ni.dll file. Native images are generated for the installed runtime and system architecture. Repair the underlying Windows component first:

  1. Run DISM.
  2. Run sfc /scannow.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Repair or reinstall the application that triggers the request.

If the same Native Image warning returns, identify the triggering executable in Reliability Monitor and remove or repair that obsolete application. A current Windows 10 or Windows 11 system with no Media Center software should not normally need this legacy assembly.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the triggering application points there

A driver update is not a direct repair for ehitvmsmusic.dll, but it can be relevant if the error began alongside a TV tuner, audio, capture, or display-device failure in an older Media Center setup.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers, Display adapters, and any TV tuner category.
  4. Right-click the device involved in the failure.
  5. Select Properties and review the Driver tab.
  6. Use Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not replace a working driver merely because this DLL is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers when identifying the correct vendor package manually is difficult; its free scan shows detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Use the device manufacturer’s official package when you already know which driver is required.

Do not use regsvr32 or manually copy the file

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A missing GAC assembly is not repaired by registering it.

This command is therefore not a normal fix:

regsvr32 ehiTVMSMusic.dll

It may return an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. Do not keep trying different versions of regsvr32, including the 32-bit and 64-bit copies, unless a verified Microsoft procedure specifically requires registration.[^6]

Manual copying is also unsafe. The correct assembly needs the appropriate version, strong name, GAC location, permissions, related assemblies, and possibly regenerated native images. Copying a file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can create version conflicts and still leave the original problem unresolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When System Restore or Windows repair is justified

Use System Restore when the warning began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup operation, or software change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open it.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the failure began.
  5. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  6. Start the restore and restart when prompted.

System Restore normally reverts system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal files.[^7] It does not replace a clean malware investigation or a backup.

If DISM, SFC, feature repair, and application repair all fail, back up personal files and consider an in-place Windows repair. A clean reinstall may be appropriate for a severely damaged or compromised legacy installation.

FAQ

Is ehitvmsmusic.dll a legitimate Windows file?

Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s Windows Media Center and Microsoft TV assembly family. Its expected managed-assembly location is in the .NET GAC. A file with the same name in an unrelated folder still requires path and signature verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not as a first response. There is no specific evidence that this filename is a Visual C++ runtime or DirectX component, and installing a random standalone .NET package does not restore a missing Media Center assembly. Repair Windows and the application that requests the file instead.

Why does Windows 11 report a Media Center DLL?

Usually because an old application, startup entry, scheduled task, upgrade remnant, or malware is still requesting a legacy component. Windows 11 does not provide Windows Media Center as a current component.

Is ehiTVMSMusic.ni.dll the same file?

It is a related Native Image generated from the managed assembly. It should be regenerated by Windows servicing or the runtime, not downloaded manually.

What if the error appears after every restart?

Find the process responsible in Reliability Monitor, Task Manager’s Startup apps, and Task Scheduler. Repair or uninstall the obsolete program, then scan for malware. Running SFC repeatedly will not remove an orphaned startup reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download the DLL from a DLL website?

No. Random downloads can contain malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture, and copying them rarely repairs the GAC or the application that made the request. Use Microsoft repair tools, the applicable Microsoft media component, or the original program’s official installer.
