Delaware quarterback EJ Archield made his first college appearance and start on October 2, 2026, against Liberty. He completed 10 of 19 passes for 137 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions before Delaware changed quarterbacks at halftime in a 30–14 loss. Head coach Ryan Carty’s explanation, as reported after the game, was: “We needed a spark.”
Why EJ Archield started against Liberty
Archield, a sophomore from Tampa, had not played in a college game before the Liberty matchup. Delaware’s roster says he did not see game action in 2025. He started because regular starter Nick Minicucci was unavailable with a leg injury, according to pregame reporting by RotoWire.
Archield’s Delaware roster biography lists his 2024 senior-year totals at Gaither High School: 2,448 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, a .602 completion percentage, 300 rushing yards and seven rushing scores. Those are high-school figures, not college results. Delaware’s roster biography identifies him as a sophomore quarterback.
Archield’s numbers and the halftime quarterback change
In his first college game, Archield completed 10 of 19 passes for 137 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions, according to Delaware’s official recap and its season statistics. The statistics page lists his completion rate as 52.63%; with only one college appearance, that figure describes this game, not a settled measure of his ability.

Contemporary postgame coverage says Archield played the first half, after which Braden Streeter started the second half and Tyler Bell also entered. Carty’s “We needed a spark” comment was reported by Underdog Dynasty. That establishes a change and the coach’s stated rationale; it does not establish a specific technical flaw or decision-making problem for Archield.

Why the result was difficult for Delaware to change
Delaware lost 30–14 and did not score until the fourth quarter. The offense had 188 yards in the first half—59 rushing and 129 passing—while Liberty held the ball for 20:30 of that half, according to Philly College Sports. Those are team figures, not Archield-only statistics, and possession time helps describe the game context rather than explain an individual performance.
Delaware’s two fourth-quarter touchdown passes came from the quarterbacks who entered after halftime: Streeter connected with Donovan Lewis for a 58-yard score, and Bell threw a 27-yard touchdown to Matthew McKinley-Daniels. What the game does—and does not—show
Archield’s first college start produced 137 passing yards without a touchdown or interception, and he did not return after halftime. The available game reporting supports describing that as a quarterback change made in search of a spark. It does not provide a film-based diagnosis of why the offense was out of rhythm, nor does it establish Delaware’s plan for its next game.
