Some Elden Ring players say dodging or rolling feels delayed, but community discussions do not show how common the experience is or prove a single cause. Official guidance points to several things worth separating: the shared backstep/roll/dash control, recovery time after actions, and frame-rate problems. Bandai Namco has not confirmed a universal dodge-input bug or a hardware fix.
What the reports do—and do not—show
Steam discussions include player-authored threads titled “Input delay in dodging/rolling? Anyone else?” and “Is there really an input lag on the roll?” These posts show that some players perceive a delay; they do not establish prevalence, measured latency, or a common cause. The official materials cited here provide no dodge-input latency figure.
It is useful to distinguish three experiences: the game interpreting a shared button action differently than expected, a character still being committed to an earlier action, and performance hitching that makes play feel unresponsive. The available sources do not establish that any one of these explains every report.
Check how the dodge button works
Bandai Namco Europe’s starter guide assigns backstep, dodge roll, and dash to the same controller action. Holding the button with directional input performs a dash; pressing it with left-stick direction performs a roll. That shared mapping can make the result differ from what a player expects if the button is held or the directional input is missing.

Check the mapping under the game’s Controller Settings, then test a deliberate press with a clear directional input. This is a check of the control behavior, not proof that a reported delay is caused by the player or the mapping.
Separate input registration from action recovery
A roll request made while the character is still completing an attack or another action may not produce an immediate roll. In its version 1.06 patch notes, dated August 9, 2022, Bandai Namco said it reduced the time until rolling becomes possible after certain attacks, with stated exceptions. That documents action-recovery tuning; it does not confirm a general input-registration defect.

When checking a perceived delay, notice whether the character has finished the preceding action before pressing roll. If the same button press produces a roll when the character is free but not during an attack animation, that observation is consistent with recovery timing; it does not by itself diagnose a controller problem.
Check for frame-rate instability, especially on PC
Frame-rate problems can make controls feel less responsive, but troubleshooting them is not a guaranteed fix for every roll-delay report. Bandai Namco acknowledged frame-rate and other performance-related gameplay issues in a February 25, 2022 performance notice and said updating PC graphics drivers may significantly improve performance.

Later guidance narrows down some PC conditions to check:
- Ray tracing: The version 1.09 notes, dated March 23, 2023, introduced ray tracing on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC and warned that performance, including frame rate and resolution, could be affected. The notes explain how to turn ray tracing off if it harms PC performance.
- Unstable PC frame rate: The version 1.12.3 notes, dated July 3, 2024, report that ray tracing could be unintentionally enabled on some PC setups and that third-party applications controlling mouse behavior could cause unstable frame rates. If performance is unstable, check the ray-tracing setting and temporarily close such applications to see whether performance changes.
- PS5 frame-rate instability: The version 1.16 notes, dated October 17, 2024, again list possible performance troubleshooting for PS5 frame-rate instability and PC ray tracing. They do not say a universal dodge-input issue was fixed.
The version 1.02 notes, dated February 24, 2022, mention improved player controls and fixes for frame-rate drops under certain conditions, but do not identify a dodge/roll input-delay fix. Taken together, the patch history documents control and performance changes without confirming a universal roll-delay bug.

A practical order for checking a specific case
- In Controller Settings, confirm which button is assigned to backstep, dodge roll, and dash.
- Press the button with a directional input, and compare a tap with a hold to distinguish a roll from a dash.
- Try again when the character is not finishing an attack or another action; note whether the perceived delay occurs only during recovery.
- If the frame rate is visibly unstable on PC, check ray tracing and temporarily disable third-party mouse-control applications, then compare performance.
- For PC performance problems, consider Bandai Namco’s launch-notice advice to update graphics drivers; do not assume that this will fix a roll delay unrelated to performance.
These checks help isolate control behavior, recovery, and performance as separate variables. The cited sources do not test a particular controller, cable, display, or GPU as a proven solution to dodge delay.
What is confirmed—and what is not
Official documentation confirms the shared button mapping, recovery-time adjustments after certain attacks, and several performance conditions that can affect frame rate. Player discussions confirm that some players describe a delay, but their reports are anecdotal. No cited official source confirms a general dodge-input-delay bug, quantifies its prevalence, or recommends a specific hardware product to solve it.
