If an item you picked up in Elden Ring is missing from your inventory, check the Recent Items tab and the chest at a Site of Grace first. If the game says you cannot acquire an item because your inventory and storage are full, free a slot and try again. These are different problems from an expected ground drop that never appeared—and the official guidance does not confirm a current, general bug causing ordinary loot drops to fail to spawn.
First, identify what happened
“Missing item” can describe several situations: you collected an item but cannot find it, the game refused the pickup, an expected object never appeared on the ground, or Runes dropped on death cannot be recovered. The right check depends on which one you saw.
- Picked it up, but it is not in the inventory: Check Recent Items and the chest.
- The game reported that inventory and storage limits were exceeded: Make room, then retry the acquisition.
- No ground object appeared: Note the item, location or enemy, platform, and whether an object was visible to collect. The official sources do not establish a general fix for an absent ordinary drop.
- Runes dropped when you died: A past patch fixed a specific Rune pickup bug; that does not establish that current ordinary enemy loot is failing to spawn.
If you picked up an item but cannot find it
- Open System > Display and turn on the Recent Items tab display.
- Open your inventory and inspect the Recent Items tab. Patch 1.12 added this tab and a marker for newly acquired items; see Bandai Namco’s version 1.12 patch notes.
- Rest at or visit a Site of Grace, open its menu, and choose Sort Chest to check whether the item was stored there.
FromSoftware’s FAQ says an item may be placed in the chest automatically when the inventory’s item-type limit has been reached. It is a possibility, not a guarantee that every unaccounted-for item will be there. See the official Elden Ring FAQ.
If the game says you cannot obtain the item
When the message specifically says inventory and storage limits have been exceeded, discard or sell an unwanted item to make room, then try to acquire the item again. FromSoftware gives this as the remedy in its FAQ.

There is also a relevant historical caveat: version 1.07 fixed a bug that could prevent acquisition of items including Great Runes, Crystal Tears, Cracked Pots, and Ritual Pots when inventory and storage item-type counts were at their maximum. That patch record documents a past, scoped bug; it does not show that the same issue persists in current versions. The details are in Bandai Namco Europe’s version 1.07 notes.
One specific Crystal Tear case
The version 1.07 notes also describe a Crystal Tear acquisition issue. If that particular pickup failed, the notes say the Crystal Tear would be added when the player moved near the place where it should have been obtained. Do not assume this recovery behavior applies to other items.

If a drop is missing or Runes cannot be recovered
Separate an object that never appeared from one that appeared but could not be collected. For an absent expected drop, record the item, the location or enemy, your platform, and whether you saw an object on the ground. The official sources cited here do not confirm a current general bug that makes ordinary enemy drops fail to spawn, nor do they establish that revisiting the area or restarting will restore a missing drop.
For Runes dropped on death, version 1.06 fixed a bug that sometimes prevented their pickup under certain circumstances. This is a historical fix for Rune recovery, not evidence that current ordinary enemy loot is absent. See Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s version 1.06 notes.

For equipment-display or loading problems
If the issue is that equipment does not display or loading does not complete correctly, FromSoftware’s FAQ gives separate guidance: check whether the game files were installed correctly, then submit a report through its game-bug inquiry form if the problem remains. Those steps address the symptoms described by the FAQ; they are not a confirmed remedy for every missing inventory item or drop.

As of October 8, 2026, the official Elden Ring site lists version 1.17.1 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Its September 8, 2026 notice says the update fixes a multiplayer issue that allowed acquisition of items that normally should not be obtainable under certain conditions. It does not describe a general missing-inventory or drop-spawning fix. Check the official version 1.17.1 notice for that platform list and update details.
