The reviewed boss guide reports that he resists fire and lightning but is susceptible to frostbite and bleed. In the fight, patience matters more than chasing damage: roll through many spear attacks, wait out delayed combos, and keep your distance from the large serpent attacks in phase two.
Where to find Messmer the Impaler
Messmer’s arena is in Shadow Keep, in northern Scadu Altus. Windows Central places it on the keep’s sixth floor, reached by crossing an exterior bridge on the west side that is guarded by a Fire Knight. The route involves pulling a lever to move statues inside the tower, then platforming across them toward the arena. PowerPyx calls the destination the Dark Chamber Entrance.

You can enter Shadow Keep through its southern main gate or progress through the Church District on the east side. From either route, make your way upward through the keep and follow the statue-platform path to the west-side bridge.
How to enter the Land of Shadow
If you have not reached the expansion area yet, the official Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree instructions say you must defeat both Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood. Then travel from the Cocoon of the Empyrean Site of Grace in Mohgwyn Palace. After activating any Site of Grace in the Land of Shadow, you can travel between it and the Lands Between from the map.

What is Messmer weak to?
Windows Central’s boss guide reports that Messmer resists fire and lightning, while frostbite and bleed are effective status options. These are guide-based recommendations, not a requirement to respec or use a particular weapon.
- Frostbite or bleed: Consider a weapon, skill, or effect that can build either status if it fits your setup.
- Fire resistance: Fire-resistant gear or consumables can help against his fire-heavy attacks.
- Stance damage: Heavy attacks with a suitably heavy weapon can create opportunities for stance breaks, but committing to them carelessly can leave you open to severe damage.
- Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes: These progression upgrades increase damage dealt and reduce damage taken in the DLC.
- Spirit Ashes: Black Knife Tiche or Mimic Tear are examples the guide suggests for drawing Messmer’s attention.
There is no single best approach for every build. Status buildup can reward sustained openings, while heavy attacks aim for stance breaks. A summon can draw attention but changes how you manage the boss’s focus; fighting solo gives you more direct control. A greatshield can reduce some incoming damage, but it does not remove the need to manage stamina and dodge timing. PowerPyx’s magic-projectile advice is specific to its mage setup, not evidence that ranged magic is a universal weakness.
How to handle phase one
Watch Messmer’s tells, then dodge with the attack’s timing and direction in mind. Windows Central notes that rolling through many spear and fire attacks is safer than rolling away: outward movement can leave you within reach of a spear swing or fire spray. Delayed attacks punish early rolls, so wait for the strike to commit.
Opening fireball
At the start, Messmer jumps, gathers fire, and lands before the fireball explodes. The guide recommends rolling the landing, then timing a second roll for the explosion rather than treating the jump and blast as one attack.
Spear combos and fire
A fire-charged spear signals a sequence of swings and thrusts that spray fire. For the described three-part aerial combo, roll through the first fiery slash, roll toward the repeated thrusts, then create distance from the ground thrust and the flaming spears that erupt afterward. When the spear attacks are delayed, avoid rolling on reflex; wait for the actual attack cue.
Throw and grab cues
A high leap with Messmer’s arm pulled back signals a spear throw and can leave a punish window. The grab is much more dangerous: look for his rush and the fire gathering in his hand. The guide warns that a successful grab can nearly always kill, so prioritize avoiding it over squeezing in another hit.

At about half health, Messmer embraces the serpent within him and gains attacks that involve giant serpents. The main adjustment is to stop attacking until repeated sequences have finished; trying to punish too early can put you in the path of the next strike.
Repeating serpent attacks
Some giant-serpent attacks can repeat. Stay focused on the sequence and wait until it has ended before moving in to attack. PowerPyx likewise recommends using recovery periods after combos and the transformation rather than forcing hits during the attack string.
Area attack and multiple bites
When Messmer hovers limply before the area attack, sprint away. The attack is followed by multiple snake bites, so dodge each bite as it arrives instead of assuming one roll will carry you through the whole sequence. A greatshield may block some of the multi-bite damage, but Windows Central cautions that this is not consistently effective.
Choosing a strategy for your build
| Approach | What it offers | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Frostbite or bleed | Uses status effects the reviewed guide identifies as effective against Messmer. | Choose a weapon or effect you can apply safely during his recovery windows; no particular build is mandatory. |
| Heavy attacks | Can pursue stance breaks with a suitably heavy weapon. | Long commitments are risky when Messmer is still attacking; do not trade damage blindly. |
| Spirit Ash summon | Can draw attention and create chances to reposition or attack. | It changes aggro patterns, so be ready for Messmer to switch targets. |
| Greatshield | May reduce damage from some attacks, including parts of the multi-bite sequence. | Blocking is not consistently effective against the multi-bite attack and still requires stamina management. |
| Ranged magic | Can exploit openings from farther away; PowerPyx discusses this for a mage build. | The cited recommendation is build-specific, not a general weakness ranking. |
Whatever your setup, prioritize learning the delayed timings and attack sequences before extending a punish. Windows Central’s advice is based on its guide rather than a universal mechanics table, and individual results can vary with build, patch, and player timing.
