What the director said about cross-gen and cross-platform play
Game director Junya Ishizaki put the distinction this way: “Similar to the original Elden Ring, there will be cross-generational play but not cross-platform play.” GameSpot reported the statement from Ishizaki’s interview with IGN.
In practical terms, “cross-gen” means players using different generations of the same console family can join each other. “Cross-platform” means players on separate platform families—such as PlayStation and Xbox, or console and PC—can play together. Nightreign supports the first in the listed console pairings, but not the second.

Which version should you choose to play with friends?
Check which platform family your friends use before choosing an edition. For example, a PS5 player can join a friend on PS4, and an Xbox Series X|S player can join a friend on Xbox One. A PlayStation player cannot use cross-play to join an Xbox or PC player.
Nightreign is described by Bandai Namco as a standalone co-op action survival game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco. That co-op focus makes platform compatibility worth checking before buying, but a purchase on one platform does not remove the stated cross-platform restriction. Why is cross-platform play unavailable?
The cited official information and Ishizaki’s reported comment establish which systems can play together, but do not give a reason for excluding cross-platform play. They do not establish whether the decision was technical, commercial, or based on another consideration.
