If you recover less than you expected in Stormveil Castle, Gatekeeper Gostoc may be taking a portion under a location- and progression-specific condition.
What happens to your runes when you die?
The game’s About Death tutorial explains: “You will drop any runes in your possession at the site of your death. If you die again before reclaiming those runes, they will be lost forever.” The compass points toward the lost-rune marker. Follow it back to the death site and interact with the marker to reclaim the runes.
This rule applies to the runes already held as your currency balance. It does not mean every rune-related item in your inventory disappears.
Why might you get fewer runes back?
You died again before recovering the marker
If you died a second time before collecting the previous marker, the earlier dropped runes are permanently lost. The new death creates a marker for the runes you were carrying at that point; it does not restore the previous amount.

You died in Stormveil Castle while Gostoc’s effect applies
Eldenpedia’s community-maintained Gatekeeper Gostoc page reports that he takes 30% of the runes dropped when you die in Stormveil Castle under the relevant conditions. The page also describes NPC interactions and game progression that end the effect. Treat this as a specific Stormveil exception, not the normal death rule or a general explanation for every shortfall.
You are comparing currency with unconsumed Golden Runes
Golden Runes are inventory items. They remain in your inventory when you die unless you have used them to add runes to your held balance. The held balance is what gets dropped at death; unconsumed Golden Rune items are separate.

How to check where the missing runes went
- Check the location of the death. If it was in Stormveil Castle, consider whether Gostoc’s reported rune deduction applies.
- Look for the previous marker. Use the compass to find the runes from your last death.
- Recall whether you died again before collecting them. If so, the earlier dropped amount is lost.
- Separate your balance from your inventory. Check whether the amount you expected was held currency or Golden Rune items you had not consumed.
- Collect the marker before taking another risk. Once reclaimed, the recovered runes return to your held balance.
Can you protect runes before a risky fight?
A Sacrificial Twig can be equipped in a talisman slot. According to Eldenpedia’s Runes page, it is consumed instead of your runes on your next death. It is an in-game option for protecting the held balance, not a way to recover runes already lost in an earlier death.
