Elden Ring’s pouch shortcuts let you use an assigned item with a held button and a D-pad direction, without cycling through the ordinary quick-equip bar. On PlayStation, hold Triangle; on Xbox, hold Y; then press the direction assigned to that item. Bandai Namco recommends the shortcuts when scrolling through the quick-equip bar is taking too long.
How to use a pouch shortcut
- Hold the modifier: press and hold Triangle on PlayStation or Y on Xbox.
- Press the assigned direction: while holding the button, press the D-pad direction linked to the item you want to use.
The item assigned to that direction is activated. The official FromSoftware PlayStation manual also lists pouch shortcut item use among the game’s controls.

How to assign an item
Bandai Namco says shortcuts are assigned through the selection menu in the bar on the right side of the screen. For a more detailed route, PowerPyx’s 2022 guide describes opening the menu, choosing Pouch, selecting a slot, and assigning a usable item from the inventory. Menu prompts can vary by platform or control setup, so follow the instructions shown in your current game if they differ.
- Open the in-game menu and go to Pouch.
- Choose an available pouch slot.
- Select a usable item to assign it to that slot.
After assigning it, use the slot’s D-pad direction with the appropriate held modifier.

Quick shortcuts versus the quick-equip bar
The ordinary quick-equip bar is useful for items you want to cycle through. Pouch shortcuts provide a direct route to specific assigned items, reducing the need to scroll through that selection. They are most useful when you have several items on the bar and want to reach one particular item quickly; they do not replace the quick-equip bar.
There is no substantiated statistic for how many players use the shortcuts or how much time they save. Bandai Namco’s advice is practical rather than a measured performance claim: use the shortcuts if scrolling has become too time-consuming.

Bandai Namco lists Elden Ring for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam in its starter guide. The documented PlayStation and Xbox inputs do not establish that either platform is faster or easier, and remapped controls may change what you need to press.
