email.dll is the Email PlugIn for IrfanView, not a Windows system file. If email.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair IrfanView’s official PlugIns installation rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.
The plug-in enables IrfanView’s image-by-email feature. Historical IrfanView documentation identifies MAPI as part of that email functionality. The file was developed by Irfan Skiljan and belongs in IrfanView’s PlugIns directory.
The quickest safe fix
- Close IrfanView completely.
- Determine whether you installed IrfanView-32 or IrfanView-64.
- Download the matching PlugIns package from the official IrfanView website.
- Run the PlugIns installer.
- Approve administrator access if Windows requests it.
- Install the package into the correct IrfanView folder.
- Start IrfanView and test the email command.
Use the 32-bit PlugIns package with IrfanView-32 and the 64-bit package with IrfanView-64. Do not mix them. Both editions can exist on the same computer, but each must use its own matching program and PlugIns folders.
The current official PlugIns listing identifies the EMAIL PlugIn as version 4.75. The official 32-bit package includes iview475_plugins_setup.exe and a ZIP alternative. The 64-bit edition has its own PlugIns package.

Fix 1: Reinstall the matching IrfanView PlugIns package
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
This is the most likely solution because email.dll is an application plug-in. A missing file, incomplete update, damaged PlugIns directory, or accidental deletion is repaired when the official package puts the plug-in back in its expected location.
Identify your IrfanView architecture
Open IrfanView if it starts:
- Click Help.
- Click About IrfanView.
- Check whether the program identifies itself as 32-bit or 64-bit.
If IrfanView will not start:
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for IrfanView.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Open file location.
- Right-click the IrfanView shortcut in the folder and choose Properties.
- Select the Shortcut tab.
- Note the target path.
A path under C:Program Files (x86) commonly indicates the 32-bit installation, while a path under C:Program Files commonly indicates the 64-bit installation. The folder location is a useful clue, but use IrfanView’s own About information when available.
Install the correct package
- Close IrfanView.
- Open the official IrfanView website and go to its PlugIns download page.
- Download the PlugIns installer matching your edition.
- Right-click the downloaded installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license and installation prompts.
- Confirm that the destination points to the IrfanView installation you actually use.
- Finish the installation.
- Start IrfanView again.
If you use IrfanView-64, use the official IrfanView-64 PlugIns package. If you use IrfanView-32, use the official 32-bit PlugIns installer or ZIP package.
How to tell whether it worked
Open an image, then use IrfanView’s email command. If the Email PlugIn loads without an error, the repair succeeded.

- Start IrfanView.
- Click Help.
- Select Installed Plugins.
- Look for the EMAIL PlugIn.
If EMAIL appears and is enabled, the file is installed from IrfanView’s perspective. If the same error remains, continue with the next fixes instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Fix 2: Check whether the plug-in is installed but disabled
Time needed: 2–5 minutes
IrfanView can list a plug-in that is present but disabled. Attempting to use a disabled plug-in can produce a plug-in loading error even though the DLL remains on disk.
- Open IrfanView.
- Click Help.
- Click Installed Plugins.
- Find the EMAIL PlugIn.
- Check whether it is marked disabled.
- Enable it if the interface provides that option.
- Close and restart IrfanView.
- Test the email feature again.
If EMAIL does not appear at all, reinstall the official PlugIns package. If it appears but cannot be enabled, the installation may be incomplete, the wrong architecture may be installed, or security software may have removed part of the package.
Fix 3: Reinstall IrfanView over the existing installation
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Use this step when reinstalling the PlugIns package does not restore email.dll, or when IrfanView was recently updated, moved, or partially removed.

IrfanView’s official guidance indicates that uninstalling the old version first is normally unnecessary.
- Close IrfanView.
- Download the current IrfanView installer from the official IrfanView website.
- Choose the same architecture as your existing edition.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Install it over the existing IrfanView installation.
- Reinstall the matching PlugIns package afterward.
- Restart Windows if IrfanView still reports a plug-in error.
- Open IrfanView and check Help → Installed Plugins.
Installing over the existing program repairs missing program files and can restore the expected PlugIns directory. It also avoids a common mistake: installing a new 64-bit program while leaving PlugIns from an older 32-bit installation in place.
If you installed IrfanView through the Microsoft Store, its files may be protected. Store-installed applications do not always permit users to add or replace files in their installation directories. In that situation, use the Store application’s repair or reset controls, or install the official desktop edition in a normal writable location if you need conventional PlugIns management.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may quarantine a plug-in after an update or during a scan. Do not assume every detection is a false positive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an event involving IrfanView or
email.dll. - Review the file path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if IrfanView came from an official, trusted source and the detection is demonstrably incorrect.
- If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined.
- Reinstall IrfanView and its PlugIns from the official source.
- Run a full security scan.
If antivirus software removes the DLL again immediately after installation, do not repeatedly restore it. Record the detection name, scan the installer, and contact the security vendor if the file came from the official package.
Fix 5: Correct permissions and the installation path
Time needed: 5 minutes
A protected folder can prevent the installer from writing email.dll into IrfanView’s PlugIns directory.
- Close IrfanView.
- Find the official IrfanView PlugIns installer.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Confirm the destination folder.
- Complete the installation.
- Start IrfanView and check Help → Installed Plugins.
If the installer cannot write to Program Files, administrator approval usually resolves the permission problem. Do not solve this by giving broad write permissions to Windows folders or by copying the DLL into a different application directory.
If the program was manually moved after installation, reinstall it into a stable location. Moving only the executable, or moving the program without its PlugIns directory, can leave IrfanView searching the wrong path.

Fix 6: Check the exact error message and missing dependencies
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Several messages can refer to the same underlying problem:
- “The program can’t start because email.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because email.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting email.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading email.dll.”
- “email.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Can’t load PlugIn: EMAIL.DLL.”
The wording varies with the Windows version and the component displaying the message.
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean email.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the plug-in. That is another reason copying an isolated DLL into a system directory is unreliable.
Check these items:
- Confirm that the IrfanView executable and PlugIns directory belong to the same installation.
- Confirm that both use the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Check whether other IrfanView plug-ins load.
- Review antivirus events.
- Reinstall the complete official PlugIns package.
- If the failure continues, record the full error text and the paths involved.
There is no verified evidence that installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, a graphics driver, or a game launcher normally installs email.dll. Those are not standard fixes for this IrfanView plug-in.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only if Windows shows broader corruption
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
email.dll is not a Windows component, so Windows repair commands will not normally restore it. Use DISM and System File Checker when Windows itself shows other problems, such as damaged built-in applications, failed updates, or repeated system-file errors.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the official IrfanView PlugIns package if
email.dllis still missing.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files against that repaired store. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling a third-party IrfanView plug-in.

Fix 8: Do not register or manually copy email.dll
Time needed: 1 minute
Do not run this as a routine repair:
regsvr32 email.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no official evidence that IrfanView’s Email PlugIn requires registration. Running the command may produce another error without changing how IrfanView discovers its PlugIns.

Those locations are for Windows components and application-specific dependencies that are designed to be found there. IrfanView expects its plug-ins in the relevant IrfanView PlugIns directory.

Downloading an isolated DLL from a random DLL website is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to the wrong architecture, be an incompatible build, or fail to include a dependency. It also leaves the damaged or incomplete IrfanView installation untouched. Use the official IrfanView installer and PlugIns package instead.
Experienced users can extract the official IrfanView ZIP package into the correct PlugIns directory, but the installer is safer because it reduces the chance of selecting the wrong folder.

A graphics driver does not normally provide email.dll. Do not reinstall drivers merely because this IrfanView plug-in is missing.
Consider driver troubleshooting only if you also have display corruption, system crashes, failed Windows updates, or multiple applications reporting hardware-related errors.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters or the device category associated with the broader problem.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Reinstall IrfanView’s official PlugIns package afterward if needed.

After a clean official reinstall, collect the information below before trying registry edits or replacement DLLs:
- The exact IrfanView executable path.
- Whether the program is IrfanView-32 or IrfanView-64.
- The exact PlugIns directory path.
- The complete error message.
- Whether EMAIL appears under Help → Installed Plugins.
- Whether other IrfanView plug-ins load.
- Any antivirus quarantine or detection event.
- Whether the Store edition or desktop edition is installed.
- Whether IrfanView or its PlugIns were recently moved, updated, or reinstalled.
This information distinguishes a missing file from an architecture mismatch, blocked installation, disabled plug-in, missing dependency, or protected Store directory.

Should I download email.dll by itself?
No. Install the official IrfanView PlugIns package matching your IrfanView architecture. An isolated DLL may be malicious, incompatible, or unable to repair the underlying installation.
Does IrfanView-32 need the 64-bit PlugIns package?
