energy.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by powercfg for energy-efficiency, battery, and sleep diagnostics. If Windows says that energy.dll is missing or could not be loaded, the most useful fix is usually to repair Windows or correct the shell architecture, not download a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which command fails:
powercfg /energy,/batteryreport, or/sleepstudy - The exact error message
- Whether you are using Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Whether the command runs from Command Prompt, PowerShell, Windows Terminal, a script, or another application
- Whether the failure started after Windows Update, antivirus activity, or a cleanup utility
- Whether the computer is 64-bit and whether the calling program is 32-bit
The clearest related message is:
The Power Efficiency Diagnostic library (energy.dll) could not be loaded.
You may also see:
The program can't start because energy.dll is missing from your computer.
energy.dll was not found.
The application or DLL energy.dll is not a valid Windows image.
These messages do not automatically mean the file was deleted. A 32-bit program can also look through the wrong Windows system path.
What energy.dll does and where it belongs
The file description is Power Efficiency Diagnostics, and it is part of Microsoft Windows. It supports powercfg, which creates reports about energy use, battery behavior, and sleep activity.
On 64-bit Windows, the native copy normally belongs here:

%windir%System32energy.dll
The 32-bit copy is normally accessed through:
%windir%SysWOW64energy.dll
The names are confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files, and Windows redirects 32-bit processes there. Microsoft documents this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
Do not move files between these folders. Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64, or a 32-bit DLL into System32.
Fix 1: Run powercfg from a native elevated shell
First test whether the problem is the way the command is being launched.
Open an administrator Command Prompt
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run the report that previously failed.
For an energy report:
powercfg /energy /output "%USERPROFILE%Desktopenergy-report.html"
For a battery report:
powercfg /batteryreport /output "%USERPROFILE%Desktopbattery-report.html"
For a Modern Standby report, where supported:
powercfg /sleepstudy /output "%USERPROFILE%Desktopsleepstudy-report.html"
The energy analysis normally runs for about one minute, then writes an HTML report to the Desktop. A successful battery or sleep report should also create the named HTML file.
Microsoft describes these options in its powercfg command-line documentation.
If a 32-bit program launches the command
A 32-bit PowerShell host, script runner, or application can be redirected to the 32-bit Windows system directory. Test the native executable explicitly:
%windir%Sysnativepowercfg.exe /batteryreport /output "%USERPROFILE%Desktopbattery-report.html"
Replace /batteryreport with /energy or /sleepstudy if that is the command you need.
Sysnative is a special alias that allows a 32-bit process to reach the native 64-bit Windows system directory. If this command works while the original command fails, the file was probably not missing. The calling process was using the wrong architecture.

The permanent fix is to run the command from ordinary 64-bit Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt, or to update the script or application that launches powercfg.
Fix 2: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
If the native elevated command still reports that energy.dll cannot be loaded, repair the Windows component store and protected system files.

- Open Start.
- Search for
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the
powercfgcommand again.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component source that SFC uses to replace damaged protected files. The result from SFC may say that it found no integrity violations, repaired files successfully, or found corruption it could not repair.
If DISM cannot find source files, do not substitute a DLL downloaded from an unknown location. Use a matching Windows installation source with the /Source and /LimitAccess options described in Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guidance.

Outbyte PC Repair can show what it identifies during its free scan, while repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC remain the normal repair path.
Fix 3: Install pending Windows updates
A servicing problem or incomplete update can leave a protected Windows component damaged or out of sync.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Run the
powercfgcommand again from an administrator Command Prompt.
Use Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions if the update page reports an error.
If the DLL error began immediately after a particular update, record the update date and first try the repair steps above. If the problem remains, open Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates, select the relevant recent update, and restart. Only remove an update when the timing clearly connects it to the failure.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Defender or another security product may have quarantined a system file. The filename alone does not prove that malware was involved, so review the detection before restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection associated with
energy.dll. - Confirm that the path is a normal Windows system path such as
%windir%System32. - Run a security scan before deciding whether to restore the file.
Microsoft explains the process in its Protection History guidance.
Do not restore a file named energy.dll from an unusual application folder just because the name matches. If Defender identifies a suspicious file, follow the security product’s removal and scan recommendations instead.
After a confirmed Microsoft file is restored, restart Windows and run DISM followed by SFC. Protection History can show whether the file is detected again.

A successful powercfg report does not mean the underlying battery, sleep, or power problem is fixed. The report may identify a driver, service, application, power request, or hardware behavior as the real cause.

If the command runs but the computer still drains quickly or refuses to sleep:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Batteries.
- Check for warning icons.
- Expand System devices and inspect power-management-related devices.
- Expand Display adapters, Network adapters, and other devices involved in sleep or wake behavior.
- Right-click a device and select Properties → Driver.
- Note the provider, date, and version before changing anything.
- Use Update driver only when you have a suitable driver source.
- Restart and test sleep or battery behavior again.
For a laptop, obtain chipset, graphics, storage, and power-management drivers from the computer manufacturer’s official support page. For a custom desktop, use the motherboard and component manufacturer’s official support pages.
Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers with its free scan, while driver installation requires the full version; it is optional, and the computer manufacturer’s official drivers remain the preferred source.
Do not use Device Manager to replace energy.dll itself. It is a Windows component, not a standalone device driver.
Fix 6: Use System Restore if the failure follows a known change
If energy.dll worked before a recent update, cleanup operation, or system change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier state without manually replacing the file.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be removed or restored.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft explains this process in its System Restore documentation.
System Restore is not a substitute for a current backup. If no suitable restore point exists, return to DISM and SFC, then consider Windows recovery repair.

Fix 7: Repair Windows when normal servicing fails
If DISM reports that it cannot repair the image, SFC cannot fix the corruption, and System Restore is unavailable, the Windows installation itself may need a deeper repair.
Before proceeding:
- Back up important files.
- Record the exact error and command that fails.
- Note whether the issue affects every administrator account.
- Review CBS and Windows servicing errors if a technician is helping.
- Use Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture.
An in-place Windows repair can replace system components while preserving personal files and applications when the installation method supports those choices. Follow Microsoft’s current Windows recovery and installation guidance rather than copying energy.dll from another computer.
Do not download energy.dll manually
Random DLL download sites are an unsafe and unreliable repair source. A downloaded file can contain malware, belong to the wrong Windows build, use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, or fail because the actual problem is process redirection or component-store corruption.
Manual copying can also create version and dependency problems. The correct version of energy.dll is tied to the installed Windows build and architecture. Repair Windows through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or an in-place repair instead.

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET packages are not the normal remedy for this file. energy.dll is a Windows power-diagnostics component, not a typical redistributable runtime.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 energy.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a self-registration entry point, normally DllRegisterServer. A power-diagnostics library is not normally repaired by registry registration. The command may produce an error such as:
DllRegisterServer entry point was not found
It may also accomplish nothing useful. Use DISM and SFC for a damaged Windows component, and correct the process architecture when the file is present but the caller is redirected.
FAQ
Is energy.dll safe?
The legitimate Windows component is a Microsoft system DLL used by powercfg. A file with the same name in an unusual application directory should be treated separately and scanned.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Where should energy.dll be?
On 64-bit Windows, the native copy normally resides in %windir%System32. A 32-bit process may access the 32-bit copy through %windir%SysWOW64 because of Windows file-system redirection.
Which commands use it?
The documented use is Windows power diagnostics, including:
powercfg /energy
powercfg /batteryreport
powercfg /sleepstudy
Some reports require administrator privileges, a supported device, or suitable Modern Standby hardware.
Does a missing file mean malware?
No. Corruption, servicing failures, antivirus quarantine, and architecture mismatches are more useful first checks. Run Defender scans when the file disappeared unexpectedly or was found outside a normal Windows path.

One-click scans. No signup required.
What information should I provide if the problem continues?
Record the Windows version and build, exact command, complete error text, shell or application that launched it, whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit, the file location, DISM and SFC results, and whether the failure began after an update or security event. This distinguishes a missing file from a wrong architecture, damaged Windows installation, or unrelated battery and driver problem.
