The fastest way to improve a HyperX Cloud II microphone is not a generic “mic booster.” Start with the boom’s position, the correct Windows input, sensible gain, and one restrained layer of processing. Wired Cloud II and Cloud II Wireless models use different connection paths, so identify yours before troubleshooting.
HyperX describes the wired Cloud II as using a detachable, unidirectional, noise-cancelling electret-condenser microphone rated at –42 dBV sensitivity, with a USB control box and 16-bit USB audio. The Cloud II Wireless uses a 2.4-GHz receiver, detachable microphone, mic monitoring and an LED mute indicator. See the official specifications for the wired Cloud II and Cloud II Wireless.
Identify your Cloud II connection
Wired Cloud II
The wired path is headset to detachable 3.5-mm cable to USB audio control box to computer. The box provides microphone mute, microphone volume, headphone volume and virtual 7.1 controls. You can also test the headset through an analog connection on compatible hardware.
Cloud II Wireless
The wireless model uses a USB receiver rather than the wired control box. Check that the receiver is connected, the headset is charged, and the physical mute state is correct. Wireless dropouts are a connection problem, not automatically a microphone-tone problem.

Device names vary by Windows installation. Select the Cloud II, USB headset, HyperX virtual device or wireless receiver that actually appears on your computer rather than relying on a guide’s exact label.
Fix the physical setup before changing software
- Push the detachable boom fully into its socket.
- Check the headset or control-box mute button and confirm its indicator changes state.
- Place the microphone about one to two finger widths from the corner of your mouth.
- Keep it slightly to the side, point it toward your mouth, and avoid aiming directly at your nose or chin.
- Leave the supplied foam windscreen installed.
- Keep hair, clothing and the headset cable from rubbing against the boom.
A headset microphone is designed for close speech. Moving it away and compensating with gain raises keyboard, fan and room noise. Moving it closer can increase breath and plosive noise, which is why close, slightly off-axis placement works best.
After each change, record the same sentence: “Testing one, two, three. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Change one variable at a time.
Check the wired control box
For the wired model, press the microphone-mute button once, raise the microphone-volume control gradually, and test in Windows before opening Discord or OBS. Leave virtual 7.1 off while judging microphone quality; it changes headphone playback, not the microphone capture.

- Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
- Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
- Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
- Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.
For troubleshooting, connect the USB control box directly to a different computer USB port, preferably without a hub. If the microphone works through analog but not USB, the capsule may be healthy and the likely boundary is the control box, USB port, Windows device selection or driver state.
Make Windows your clean baseline
Windows 11 input selection
- Open Start → Settings → System → Sound → Input.
- Select the Cloud II or USB headset microphone shown on your system.
- Open its input properties and confirm it is not muted or set extremely low.
- Use Windows’ microphone test or a basic recorder and save a short sample.
- Listen for silence, clipping, hum, excessive room noise and dropouts before changing application settings.
Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 and 11 input checks, permissions and sound troubleshooters.
Enable microphone permissions
Go to Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone and Let desktop apps access your microphone. Desktop programs may not appear individually, so desktop-app access must be enabled separately.
Use the legacy levels panel when needed
- Open Settings → System → Sound → More sound settings → Recording.
- Select the Cloud II input and choose Properties.
- On Levels, make sure the microphone is not muted and raise it gradually while speaking normally.
- Use Advanced only when a particular application has a format or exclusive-mode conflict.
There is no universal “set it to 100” value. Different revisions, control boxes, motherboards and applications produce different loudness. Stop increasing the level when normal speech is clear and loud speech remains clean.

Use a sensible gain strategy
Input level controls how strongly the signal enters Windows. Application input volume changes Discord or OBS’s own level. Noise suppression reduces background sound, compression narrows the difference between quiet and loud speech, and a limiter prevents new peaks from clipping. Output volume only changes how loudly a listener hears the result.
If the microphone is quiet
- Confirm the physical mute and microphone-volume controls.
- Move the boom closer and slightly off-axis.
- Select the correct Windows input.
- Raise Windows input level gradually.
- Increase the application level only if necessary.
- Use light compression instead of extreme amplification.
- Recheck for clipping after every adjustment.
If it is distorted
Return application filters to default, lower the Windows level, move the boom a little farther away, and test in a neutral recorder. A damaged capsule, unstable USB or wireless connection, or several stacked processors can also distort speech.
Configure Discord without over-processing
- Open Discord → User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Set Input Device manually to the Cloud II or its USB/wireless device instead of leaving it on Default.
- Run Discord’s Mic Test and watch the input meter while speaking normally.
- Try automatic input sensitivity first, then adjust manually only when needed.
- Use push-to-talk if the room is noisy or voice activation clips words.
- Check local mute, server mute, channel permissions and the push-to-talk key.
Discord’s Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide covers device selection, permissions and resetting settings. Its Mic Test plays captured speech through the selected output, helping separate capture faults from what another listener is hearing.
Choose processing by symptom
- Noise suppression: useful for fans and keyboards, but can sound metallic or remove word endings.
- Echo cancellation: useful when speakers leak into the microphone; usually unnecessary with closed-back headphones.
- Automatic gain control: can raise room noise and create pumping.
- Voice activity detection: convenient, but may cut the start or end of speech.
- Push-to-talk: reliable in noisy rooms, less convenient for casual conversation.
If Discord sounds underwater, gated or robotic, compare its Mic Test with processing reduced or disabled. If Discord alone is broken, use User Settings → Voice & Video → Debugging → Reset Voice and Video Settings.

Build a restrained OBS chain
Record a short local sample before adding filters. Compare raw audio, light processing and aggressive processing rather than judging only through live monitoring.
- Noise suppression: add only when room noise requires it.
- Expander or noise gate: reduce sound between phrases.
- Compressor: even out speech volume.
- Limiter: place last to prevent new peaks.
A gate cannot remove keyboard noise while you are speaking. Compression can make room noise more audible, a limiter cannot repair already-clipped audio, and suppression does little for reverberation. Avoid running Discord suppression, Windows enhancements, OBS suppression and a virtual mixer gate simultaneously.
Game-chat troubleshooting
Games may use a different input than Discord. Select the Cloud II input manually in the game when possible, enable in-game voice chat, verify the push-to-talk key, and confirm Windows microphone permissions. Close software that may claim exclusive access and test in Windows first.
If Discord works but one game does not, investigate that game’s device selection, permissions and keybinds before changing firmware or buying hardware. On consoles, focus on physical mute, headset connection, system chat and in-game chat settings; Windows software cannot repair a console microphone path.

Interpret USB and analog tests
| Result | Most likely boundary | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Works analog, fails USB | USB control box, port, Windows selection or USB state | Try another direct USB port, reselect the device and test without audio utilities. |
| Fails through USB and analog | Boom, connector, cable, mute state or headset hardware | Reseat the boom and cable, then seek hardware support. |
| Works in Windows, fails Discord | Discord device, permission or processing setting | Select the device manually, run Mic Test and reset Voice & Video if needed. |
| Works in Discord, fails one game | Game input, permission or push-to-talk setting | Configure that game independently. |
Analog quality depends on the computer, controller, console or adapter. A 3.5-mm combo jack may require correct TRRS wiring, while some desktops use separate headphone and microphone sockets. An analog test can have a different level, so it is diagnostic rather than an identical replacement configuration.
Firmware and HyperX software
Check HyperX’s current NGENUITY compatibility page before installing anything. NGENUITY and NGENUITY Legacy are Windows-only, device support varies, and older headsets may not expose the same controls as newer products. Do not assume the wired Cloud II is fully configurable in the current release.
HyperX recommends checking compatibility, firmware, another USB port and reinstalling the application when a device is not detected. Use only firmware supplied for your exact revision by HyperX support. An older Kingston document labeled Cloud II Firmware Update 0005 instructs users to connect directly to a motherboard USB port; it should not be treated as a universally current update.
If software makes detection worse
- Unplug the headset and close conflicting audio utilities.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect directly to a different USB port.
- Reselect the input in Windows and Discord.
- Test without NGENUITY, virtual mixers and enhancements.
- Contact HyperX support if detection or an update continues to fail.
Diagnose common symptoms
| Symptom | Likely causes | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Silent everywhere | Mute, disconnected boom, permissions, wrong input or failed hardware | Check mute, reseat the boom, verify permissions and test USB and analog. |
| Very quiet | Boom too far away or low physical/Windows level | Move it closer and raise levels gradually. |
| Muffled or thin | Incorrect angle, distance or excessive processing | Point toward the mouth, use the windscreen and compare raw audio. |
| Keyboard or fan noise | Mic too far away, high gain or noisy room | Move closer, lower gain and add light suppression or push-to-talk. |
| Breathing or plosives | Too close or directly in front of lips | Move slightly aside and keep the windscreen installed. |
| Echo | Speaker leakage, monitoring loop or duplicate routing | Use headphones and check Discord/OBS monitoring paths. |
| Robotic or choppy | Heavy processing, USB instability, wireless interference or network issues | Record locally, reduce processing and change the connection path. |
| First syllables clipped | Aggressive gate or voice-activity detection | Lower the threshold, lengthen attack/release or use push-to-talk. |
When replacement makes sense
Software can improve intelligibility and consistency, but it cannot turn a small headset boom into a studio microphone or remove severe room reverberation. Consider a compatible replacement boom when the headset is otherwise reliable and only the microphone or connector is damaged; verify connector size, wiring, mechanical fit and the exact Cloud II version.

It may capture more keyboard and room noise than a headset mic. The Elgato Wave Neo is one example listed by its maker at its official product page; prices and availability change.
Replace the whole headset when the boom, cable and USB control box all show hardware faults, or when wireless convenience matters more than a major microphone-quality increase. A newer headset is not automatically a studio-quality upgrade.
