Epic Games did blame Apple for delaying Fortnite’s return to iPhones, but the 2024 dispute was narrower than that headline suggests. Apple had reportedly rejected the Epic Games Store’s notarization submission twice over interface details, according to Epic. The store was needed for an EU launch under the Digital Markets Act; it was not the same as submitting Fortnite as a normal App Store game.
Apple later accepted the marketplace in July 2024, and Epic launched the store and Fortnite on iPhones in the European Union on August 16, 2024. As of August 18, 2026, the game is also listed on the U.S. App Store and is available through Apple’s store in most regions, with Australia identified as an exception by Epic.
What was actually delayed?
The immediate delay concerned the Epic Games Store for iOS in the European Union. Epic planned to distribute Fortnite through that marketplace instead of returning through Apple’s ordinary App Store terms. Because the game depended on the store launching first, a delay to the marketplace also delayed the EU return of Fortnite.

Why Apple was reviewing the Epic Games Store
Alternative marketplaces permitted by the EU framework still had to pass Apple’s security and compliance process. Apple calls this process notarization. It is distinct from the normal App Store review used for apps listed in Apple’s storefront.
- App Store review: Apple evaluates apps intended for distribution through the App Store.
- Notarization: Apple checks software distributed through permitted alternative channels for security and compliance.
Apple says submissions can be delayed or rejected when required information is missing or when software conflicts with its applicable rules. Its review process is described at Apple’s App Review page.
Epic’s two reported objections
Epic said Apple rejected the Epic Games Store submission twice. In Epic’s account, Apple objected to the store’s “Install” button because it looked too similar to Apple’s “Get” button, and objected to the “In-app purchases” label because it resembled wording used by the App Store. The claims were reported at the time by BGR and discussed with the button examples by Daring Fireball.
Epic characterized those objections as unreasonable and said they were holding up its EU launch. That establishes what Epic alleged; it does not independently prove that Apple intentionally stalled a competitor.
Apple’s policy rationale—and what remains uncertain
Apple’s published App Review Guidelines prohibit misleading or confusing presentations, including designs that could falsely suggest Apple’s involvement or approval. On that basis, Apple’s likely concern was that a marketplace’s controls and labels should not imitate the App Store closely enough to confuse users or undermine security expectations.
The two sides therefore described the same event differently:
- Epic’s interpretation: Apple was using superficial design complaints to obstruct an alternative marketplace.
- Apple’s policy interpretation: Similar controls and labels could create user confusion and violate rules against misleading presentation.
- Not established by the available record: whether Apple applied the standard consistently, whether the objections were proportionate, or whether the review created an avoidable delay.
Apple’s eventual approval does not prove either side’s complete case. It shows only that the Epic Games Store ultimately cleared the relevant notarization process.

The approval and the EU launch
Apple accepted the Epic Games Store submission in July 2024, according to contemporaneous reporting by Ars Technica. Epic then announced the EU launch on August 16, 2024, explaining that users could install the Epic Games Store and download Fortnite from it through the store’s alternative-distribution route. The company’s announcement is available at Fortnite Returns to iOS in the European Union.
That launch was regional. Epic said EU residents who had installed the store and game could continue playing while traveling outside the EU for up to 30 days under Apple’s policies. That allowance was a travel condition, not permanent worldwide access.
What happened outside Europe?
During the 2024 dispute, Epic said Apple was still preventing iOS users outside Europe from accessing the Epic Games Store. The company described the mobile-store launch and its EU scope in its official announcement.

The situation later changed. Epic’s current support documentation says Fortnite is available through the App Store worldwide except Australia, while alternative marketplaces are available in supported jurisdictions including the EU, Japan and Brazil. Regional rules, Apple Account country settings and device support can affect what an individual user sees.

Can you play Fortnite on an iPhone now?
As of August 18, 2026, these are the principal routes:

App Store route
The App Store is the simplest option where the listing is available, with Apple’s familiar updates, account controls and parental settings. It remains subject to Apple’s regional rules and supported-hardware requirements.
Epic Games Store route
The alternative store provides direct access to Epic’s ecosystem and supports cross-platform Epic account progression, but it requires a compatible system version and a more involved installation and permissions flow. Availability depends on local regulation and Apple’s implementation of alternative marketplaces.

Streaming avoids a native installation and can help where an App Store or alternative-store download is unavailable. It requires a reliable, low-latency connection; touch controls, queues, controller support and service access vary by country and plan.
How this fits the wider Apple–Epic conflict
Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store in August 2020 after Epic introduced a payment method designed to bypass Apple’s in-app-purchase rules. Epic sued, challenging Apple’s distribution and payment policies. Court filings document the removal and the ensuing litigation, including the 2020 preliminary-injunction filings and the Ninth Circuit opinion.
The rulings produced mixed results rather than a complete victory for either company. The 2024 notarization dispute was another episode in the same fight over who controls iPhone distribution, how payments are handled and what access competing marketplaces receive. Epic’s developer-account dispute with Apple is documented in Epic’s account of the termination.
What the headline means today
“Fortnite’s delayed return to iPhones” describes a 2024 EU launch delay, not the game’s current global status. Epic accused Apple of slowing the launch after two notarization rejections; Apple later approved the store; and Fortnite reached EU iPhones on August 16, 2024. By August 2026, the game had returned to Apple’s U.S. storefront and was broadly available through App Store, alternative-marketplace and cloud options, subject to country, device and service restrictions.
