The listings were clues, not an official release slate: Epic said it changed its catalog to stop third-party tools surfacing new unpublished titles, and the codenames varied in how convincingly they matched known games.
What happened with EpicDB?
EpicDB was an unofficial database project for the Epic Games Store. On June 12, 2024, visitors noticed that publisher searches appeared to show unpublished-looking product entries alongside released games. Some entries used codenames, and people tried to identify them through associated store information such as preorder bonuses, DLC names, and cloud-save paths. The site went offline after the listings attracted attention. IGN reported on the episode; Eurogamer also covered the listings.

Epic Games responded: “We released an update so third-party tools can’t surface any new unpublished product titles from the Epic Games Store catalog.” That statement confirms a catalog-access change, not the identity, development status, or release plans of every product people believed they had found.
What did the best-known codenames point to?
| EpicDB entry | What the 2024 reporting suggested | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Utah | Coverage said users speculated that a Sony listing referred to a PC version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered. | Naughty Dog later announced the PC version for Steam and the Epic Games Store, with an April 3, 2025 release date. That announcement confirms the PC release, but not every detail inferred from the EpicDB entry. Naughty Dog’s December 12, 2024 announcement is the official confirmation. |
| Skobeloff | Reporting connected the codename to Final Fantasy XVI, in part through an Epic cloud-save folder path. | The codename was a clue discussed in coverage, not the official source for the game’s PC status. Eurogamer’s account describes the inference. |
| Momo | Coverage linked the entry to a possible Final Fantasy IX remake, citing listed bonuses including a Tetra Master Starter Pack and Thief’s Knives. | This remained speculation in the reviewed coverage; it is not an official Square Enix announcement. The reporting explains the clues behind the rumor. |
Was the Final Fantasy IX remake leak real?
The 2024 headline “Did EpicDB just leak the Final Fantasy IX Remake?” captured the question, but the evidence described in coverage supports only a speculative identification. The Momo entry and its apparent bonus items gave people a basis for the theory; they did not establish that Square Enix had announced or was actively developing a remake. No official confirmation is established by the sources reviewed here.

Was the EpicDB leak real, and how much should readers trust it?
The database listings were real enough to prompt Epic to change how third-party tools could surface unpublished catalog titles. But that does not make every interpretation of those listings accurate. A database record can reflect a planned product, an internal or test entry, a placeholder, or something else; the presence of a record alone does not prove a project was still in active development.
Contemporary coverage itself cautioned that some entries could be fake, test projects, or inactive projects. It also did not establish a reliable total number of games exposed. So “What games leaked from the Epic Games Store database?” has no trustworthy confirmed-slate answer: the story was a collection of entries and interpretations, with confidence depending on the evidence for each one. GamesRadar noted reasons for skepticism about some claims.

- Direct listing versus inferred identity: Seeing an entry is different from knowing what a codename represents.
- Metadata clues: A distinctive save path or preorder bonus can strengthen an identification, but it is still circumstantial evidence.
- Official follow-up: A developer or publisher announcement is stronger evidence of a game’s status than a catalog inference.
- Project status: Even a correctly identified record does not by itself show that a game remains in production or is scheduled to release.
