Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The Epic Games “Sorry, there was a socket open error” message means the launcher or game could not establish the connection it needed. It does not identify one specific broken Windows socket or required router port. First check Epic’s live service status; if services are operational, fully exit and reopen the launcher, test another network if possible, and then work through the cache, proxy, firewall, and Windows network fixes below.
Check whether Epic’s services are down
Open Epic’s Public Status page and check the services relevant to what you were doing: Epic Games Store, Login, Website, Game Services, Epic Online Services, and the affected game’s login or matchmaking service. A partial incident can interrupt sign-in or a game even if the wider store appears available.
If the relevant service has an active incident, wait for Epic to resolve it and try again. Changing your PC’s DNS, firewall, or router settings will not repair an Epic-side outage. The status page reported its listed services operational on August 18, 2026, but that was a point-in-time check; use the live page when the error occurs.
Use these quick checks to locate the problem
Fully exit and reopen Epic Games Launcher
- Close the launcher window.
- In the Windows notification area, click the upward arrow, right-click the Epic Games icon, and select Exit.
- If it is still running, press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager and end the remaining Epic Games Launcher processes. - Reopen Epic Games Launcher and try again.
- If the error persists, right-click the launcher shortcut and select Run as administrator once as a diagnostic test. This can help with a permissions issue, but it will not fix an outage, DNS failure, or proxy problem.
Epic documents the system-tray exit and launcher troubleshooting steps in its launcher cache and troubleshooting instructions and connection troubleshooting guide.

Restart the router and test another connection
- Restart your modem and router, then wait until your internet connection is fully restored.
- Retry the launcher.
- If available, connect the PC to a phone hotspot and try signing in again. A hotspot may use mobile data and could be slower, metered, or restricted by your carrier.
- It works on the hotspot but not your home connection: investigate the router, ISP, DNS, or home-network filtering.
- It fails on both: focus on the launcher, Windows networking, Epic account or service, and endpoint security.
- Only one game fails: check that game’s service and repair options rather than assuming the launcher itself is broken.
Epic’s connection troubleshooting guide includes router restarts, DNS, proxy checks, cache resets, and other connection causes.
Clear the Epic Games Launcher web cache
Corrupt launcher web data can cause display and connection-related errors. Deleting the specific cache folders below does not remove installed games.
- Exit Epic Games Launcher from the notification area as described above.
- Press
Windows + R, type%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - If present, delete only these folders:
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430. - Reopen the launcher and test the connection.
Do not delete the entire EpicGamesLauncher directory. If Windows says a cache folder is in use, close the launcher and its background processes before trying again. Folder names can vary; remove only the named folders or clearly labeled launcher web-cache folders. See Epic’s cache-clearing instructions.
Check VPN and proxy settings
Test without a VPN
Disconnect your VPN briefly and retry the launcher. If that fixes the error, the VPN route or its filtering is likely involved. Re-enable it after the test if you rely on it for privacy or access. Do not disconnect an organization-required VPN or proxy without checking with your administrator.

Configure a required proxy for Epic
If your school or workplace requires a proxy, Epic documents a launcher setting: open the profile/settings icon in the upper-right, go to Settings, enable Use Proxy, enter the proxy as IP:PORT, then restart the launcher. Epic also documents a -httpproxy=[ip address] shortcut method when the launcher cannot reach Settings; remove the switch after configuring the launcher normally. See Epic’s proxy instructions.
To reset a misconfigured Windows WinHTTP proxy, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
netsh winhttp reset proxy
This resets the WinHTTP proxy configuration; it may not remove browser-specific or organization-managed proxy settings. Epic’s instructions are at its WinHTTP proxy reset page.
A proxy that uses a self-signed certificate or an untrusted certificate chain can also block the launcher. On a managed network, ask the administrator to check the organization’s certificate configuration rather than bypassing certificate checks.

Flush DNS, then consider a Windows network reset
Flush the local DNS cache
DNS translates service names into network addresses. If the local resolver cache is stale, clearing it is a low-risk test. In Command Prompt (Admin), run:
ipconfig /flushdns
Microsoft documents this option in its ipconfig command reference. If you suspect your ISP’s DNS resolver, you can separately test a reputable public DNS provider; examples include Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) and Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1). Consult the provider’s official setup instructions for your Windows version. A DNS change may help a resolver problem, but it will not fix an outage, account authentication failure, or firewall block, and no provider is fastest everywhere.
Reset Winsock only if simpler steps did not work
In an administrator Command Prompt, run:
netsh winsock reset
Restart Windows for the reset to take effect. Winsock is part of the Windows networking interface used by applications. Microsoft documents the command in its netsh winsock reference.
If ordinary troubleshooting has failed, these additional commands are more disruptive and should be treated as escalation steps:

They can interrupt the current connection or reset TCP/IP settings. Restart Windows afterward.
Allow Epic through Windows Firewall safely
Do not leave Windows Firewall disabled. Microsoft recommends allowing a trusted app rather than opening a port, which can create additional exposure. In Windows Security, go to Firewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall → Change settings, then allow the legitimate Epic Games Launcher executable and apply the rule to the network types that make sense for your use. Labels can differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11. The executable path depends on where Epic was installed; select the authentic installation, not a similarly named downloaded file.
If you use third-party antivirus or firewall software, check its application allowlist too; a Windows Firewall rule does not override another product’s block. Prefer a narrow application exception over disabling protection. For Microsoft’s guidance, see Firewall and network protection in Windows Security and the risks of allowing apps through Windows Firewall.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not start with router port forwarding
The error alone does not establish that you need to forward ports. Outages, cache problems, DNS, proxies, and application firewall rules are more appropriate to check first; broad inbound rules can expose devices unnecessarily.

Epic’s port-unblocking page lists 80, 433, 443, 3478, 3479, 5060, 5062, 5222, 6250, 12000-65000. The listing includes both 433 and the standard HTTPS port 443; verify Epic’s current instructions before making router changes rather than assuming the list is correct for your situation. Microsoft notes that allowing an app is generally safer than opening a port. If a network restriction is clearly established, consult the router maker, ISP, or network administrator before changing router rules.
When the launcher works but a game does not
- If the Store and account login work but matchmaking or parties fail, check Epic Online Services and the affected game’s login or matchmaking status. Epic’s connection guide also covers in-game connection symptoms.
- If only downloads fail, check the launcher cache, proxy, firewall allowlist, and download-related configuration.
- If one installed game will not launch, use that game’s repair or file-verification options rather than repeatedly changing DNS or router settings.
- On school, workplace, hotel, or public Wi-Fi, filtering may be controlled by the network owner; ask its administrator rather than trying to bypass managed restrictions.
When to contact Epic Support
Contact Epic if the relevant services appear operational and the error continues after the safer checks, especially if the launcher fails across multiple networks or account access is still unavailable. Also escalate if several devices began failing after an update or you cannot change a managed network’s proxy or firewall rules.
Have these details ready for official support:
- The exact error text, date and time, and time zone.
- Whether the status page showed an incident.
- Whether testing on a hotspot changed the result.
- Your Windows and launcher versions.
- Whether a VPN, proxy, antivirus, or corporate firewall is present.
- Launcher logs, if support requests them.
Provide account identifiers only through Epic’s official support channel. Do not post passwords, authentication codes, payment details, or full private logs publicly.
