For PC games, Epic Games Store and Steam have similar headline refund limits: eligible purchases generally need to be requested within 14 days and have less than two hours of playtime or runtime. Neither store guarantees cloud saves for every game. The practical difference is in eligibility labels and request steps; for saves, check support on the individual game’s store page and be prepared to resolve a sync conflict yourself.

How the refund rules compare
Epic Games Store
Epic’s US English policy applies to purchases made through Epic checkout on PC, Mac, and mobile. For PC and Mac, the 14-day window is measured from purchase—or from release for a pre-purchase—and the product must be labeled “refundable” or “self-refundable” with less than two hours of runtime. The label matters: some purchases are marked non-refundable, and virtual currency, consumables, subscriptions, and gifts may be excluded. Purchases made through another store follow that store’s rules. Local statutory rights may also apply. See the Epic Games Store Refund Policy for the policy’s terms.
The route depends on the label. For a self-refundable purchase, sign in to your Epic account and open the Transactions page to start a refund. For another purchase marked refundable, contact Player Support. Epic’s policy also gives mobile products marked refundable or self-refundable a two-hour-from-purchase window; that is a different rule from the PC and Mac 14-day window.
Steam
Steam’s general rule is a refund request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. Steam counts online, offline, and shared-library play. Requests go through Steam Support. The rule is a general eligibility standard, not an unconditional promise: Steam says it will consider requests outside the standard limits, and the details can vary for DLC and in-game purchases. What to check before requesting
- Confirm the purchase date and recorded runtime or playtime.
- On Epic, check whether the product is marked refundable or self-refundable before choosing the request route.
- For either store, check the rules for the exact product type and point of purchase rather than assuming the standard game rule applies.
- If a purchase falls outside the usual window, submitting a request does not guarantee approval; Steam says it may review exceptions.
One useful Epic-specific case: if a recent purchase goes on sale, Epic says you can request a refund and repurchase at the lower price if the purchase is still within 14 days and below two hours of playtime; Epic says this is not refund abuse. See Epic’s sale-price guidance.
Cloud saves: support is game-by-game
Epic Games Store
Epic Cloud Saves automatically store save files for supported games so you can use the same saves on different devices. Support is not universal. In the launcher library, use the Cloud Saves filter; you can also inspect the game’s Features tags on its Epic store page. Epic explains both checks in its Cloud Saves support guide.

Steam
Games can use Steam Cloud for save games, settings, profile statistics, and other user-specific data, but developers configure support at the game level and can disable synchronization for an individual game. Check the game’s Steam store listing rather than assuming every title syncs. Valve’s Steamworks Steam Cloud documentation describes the game-level setup, and Steam Support’s Steam Cloud FAQ covers player-facing behavior.
The available official information establishes how to check support, not which store has more cloud-enabled games. The total coverage comparison is therefore not established here.

What to do when saves conflict or go missing
Epic Games Store
Epic warns that disabling and then re-enabling Cloud Save can lead to conflicts. For the particular offline-sync issue covered in its troubleshooting page, Epic tells players to choose the file marked “NEWER.” That instruction is specific to the described situation, not a rule that the newest-looking file is always the right save. Follow Epic’s Cloud Saving troubleshooting steps for the matching issue.
Steam
Steam warns that synchronization can fail or that an older version may be uploaded, which can leave a recent save missing. Its support page states that Steam Support cannot recover lost save data or resolve cloud conflicts. Before accepting a conflict choice, compare available timestamps and, where practical, make a separate backup of local saves. See Steam’s cloud-save guidance.

Which store should you choose?
For the features covered here, neither store is an automatic winner. Both have a similar headline PC refund window, with conditions that must be checked against the purchase. Cloud saves depend on the individual game, and neither service’s documentation establishes that it has broader coverage or fewer sync problems.
- Choose based on refund clarity for the purchase: Epic makes the refundable or self-refundable label central to its process; Steam’s FAQ describes a general rule and a support-request path.
- Choose based on the specific game’s save support: verify the feature on that store’s listing before buying, especially if you move between devices.
- Do not treat cloud sync as a backup: sync issues can leave the wrong version in place, and recovery is not assured.
Platform availability is not a like-for-like comparison
Epic’s FAQ lists the store on PC, Mac, and Android worldwide, and on iPhone and iPad in the EU, subject to availability and each product’s compatibility. Compatibility is listed on the individual product page.
