Epic vs Steam in 2026: Which Gaming Launcher Is Best?

Steam has the stronger built-in community and Workshop toolkit; Epic Games Store's free games are its clearest hook. The best choice depends on the game, its features, price and refund eligibility.

There is no single winner in the Epic vs Steam choice: Steam is the stronger fit if you want built-in game communities, reviews, Workshop mods and discovery tools, while Epic Games Store stands out for its free-game program and for titles or offers that suit you better there. You can install both and choose store by store. Before buying a particular game, check its availability, friends and feature support, price and refund eligibility.

How to choose between Steam and Epic Games Store

A launcher is only one part of a PC game purchase. Start with the exact title rather than picking a storefront in the abstract:

  1. Check where the game is sold and where you already own it. Availability can differ by title, and a purchase generally belongs to the store where you bought it.
  2. Consider how you play. If you rely on reviews, player discussions or mods, Steam’s feature set may matter. If you enjoy claiming free games or a specific title is an Epic exclusive, Epic may make more sense.
  3. Check title-specific features. Saves, achievements, controller support, multiplayer and mods can depend on the game and its implementation. A store’s feature list does not mean every game supports every feature.
  4. Compare the current price and refund terms. Offers change, and refund eligibility depends on the product and its rules.

Both launchers can coexist on a PC. You do not need to make a permanent, all-or-nothing choice.

Where Steam has the edge: community and tools

Steam presents itself as a place to play, discuss and create games. Its official feature page lists game hubs for discussions and updates, player reviews, chat, broadcasts, achievements, custom recommendations, mobile access, early access and controller support. It also lists Steam Workshop, where players can find creations such as mods and cosmetics for nearly 1,000 supported games. Workshop availability is game-specific; it is not a universal mod system for every Steam title.

ASUS ROG G700 (2025) Gaming Desktop PC, Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 265F Processor, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5070, 1TB M.2 NVMe™ PCIe® 4 SSD, 16GB DDR5 RAM, Windows 11 Home, G700TF-DS774
  • Fearless ROG Design – The G700’s dual-glass chassis showcases iconic ROG design with the ROG Slash and Aura Sync RGB lighting. Its 58L capacity supports triple-slot GPUs.
  • Unstoppable Power – Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe 4.0 storage for seamless gaming and multitasking.

  • Advanced Connectivity – Game without lag with 2.5Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and versatile ports. Dolby Atmos audio and AI noise cancellation enhance sound and communication.
  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.

Those tools make Steam a natural choice for players who want community activity and mod discovery close to their library. They do not guarantee that a particular game has an active community, useful reviews, or Workshop support, so check the game’s own hub and feature details.

Steam’s live landing page describes its catalog as “nearly 30,000 games.” That is an approximate Steam-reported figure, not a directly comparable count against Epic’s catalog: the sources do not establish matching counting methods.

Where Epic Games Store stands out: free games and a growing catalog

Epic’s strongest consumer-facing distinction is its free-games program. In its February 3, 2026 year-in-review, Epic said players claimed 662 million titles through the program during 2025. A claim adds a game to a library; it does not tell you how many people played each title or how much they enjoyed it.

Epic also reported that its catalog had surpassed 6,000 games. These figures are Epic’s own reporting, not an independent measurement or a method-matched comparison with Steam. The same report said:

  • Epic Games Store had 78 million PC monthly active users in December 2025.
  • Players spent $1.16 billion on the store’s PC games in 2025.
  • Players spent 2.78 billion hours in third-party games in 2025.
  • More than 100,000 gifts were sent over the 2025 holiday period after gifting launched in November 2025.

Epic noted that 35% of third-party playtime involved games whose developers used their own in-game payment solutions. It also said the $400 million figure for third-party PC game spending excludes some games whose developers process in-game payments themselves. These company-reported numbers describe Epic’s store and should not be read as a direct comparison with Steam or as a prediction of what individual players will spend.

Features that vary by game—and Epic’s 2026 changes

Do not assume that buying a game on one store gives you the same experience as buying it on another. Check the specific listing and the game’s support information for cloud saves, achievements, controller compatibility, multiplayer and mods. Where your friends play may also matter: cross-play and shared progress are game-specific, not guaranteed by the launcher.

Epic’s 2026 year-in-review describes a launcher architecture rebuild and planned store and social additions, including community spaces, profiles, private messaging, voice chat, game-independent parties and a cross-platform library. Those are roadmap claims in the report, not proof that every feature is available now. Check Epic’s current app and announcements before relying on any of them.

Refunds: check the actual purchase rules

Steam’s refund policy says, “You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason,” but its standard condition for games is a request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. The page, last updated April 23, 2024, also describes separate rules or exceptions for DLC, in-game purchases, subscriptions, hardware, bundles and gifts. The standard game condition is not a guarantee that every purchase qualifies.

Epic’s refund guidance makes eligibility depend on the product’s refund marking and applicable window. Consumables and products marked non-refundable are excluded, and most in-app purchases are non-refundable. The exact window is not established here, so check the live policy and the specific listing for your region before buying.

Does developer revenue share decide which store is better?

For most players, revenue share is background context rather than a reason to choose a launcher. Epic’s developer policy says that from 2026 its $1 million revenue threshold resets each January 1 and applies per title; after the threshold, the standard split is 88% to the developer and 12% to Epic. That policy does not establish a player-facing quality advantage or predict where a developer will release a game.

Steam identifies Steamworks as its publishing tools and services, but the sources cited here do not provide a current, comparable breakdown of Steam’s revenue share. A full commission comparison would therefore be incomplete.

Epic vs Steam: which launcher should you use?

  • Choose Steam when its reviews, game hubs, Workshop support, recommendations or other community tools are important to you—and the game supports the features you want.
  • Choose Epic Games Store when you want to claim its free games, the title is available there on terms you prefer, or its current offer is better for that exact purchase.
  • Use both when your library, friends or preferred features are split between stores. Decide per game, and verify its support and refund conditions before purchasing.
