epnutx22.dll is an old Epson application DLL, not a normal Windows system file. If Windows reports that epnutx22.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest repair is to reinstall the complete Epson printer software package for the exact printer model.
The file is associated with the EPSON Color Printing Plugin and is identified in public file metadata as EPNUTX22, from SEIKO EPSON CORP. It is not established as part of Windows, Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game runtime.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Epson printer package
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
This is the most likely solution, especially if the error appears while installing a printer, launching old Epson software, or printing from an existing Epson installation.
Do not search for epnutx22.dll by itself. The DLL may require other Epson files, registry entries, configuration files, or dependencies. Reinstalling only the named file often leaves the underlying problem intact.

1. Identify the exact printer model
Check the label on the printer itself or the original purchase documentation. Record the complete model name, including letters and numbers.
If the printer is already installed:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Epson printer.
- Note the model shown under the printer name.
You can also check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Record the Epson model listed there.
Do not assume that two printers in the same product family use the same package.
2. Check the Windows edition and architecture
To check the Windows version:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Review Windows specifications.
Under Device specifications, check System type. It will normally identify the system as 64-bit or 32-bit.
A 32-bit Epson application may need a 32-bit DLL even when Windows is 64-bit. Public records for epnutx22.dll do not provide one universally reliable architecture, version, or file size, so the correct build must come from the matching Epson package.

First try the normal uninstall process:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Epson.
- Remove the Epson printer software, status monitor, scanner software, or printing plugin related to the affected printer.
- Restart Windows.
On older systems, use:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Epson software.
- Select Uninstall.
If the printer itself remains listed, remove it separately:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Epson printer.
- Select Remove.
Do not delete random Epson folders before uninstalling. The installer may need its own uninstall information to remove the package cleanly.
4. Download the package from Epson
Open Epson’s official printer driver support page and select the exact printer model. Choose the package that matches your Windows release and architecture.
Prefer the full printer driver or printer software package rather than a small utility. If several downloads are listed, install the main printer driver first, followed by Epson utilities that you actually need.
The exact current package may not be named epnutx22.dll. Epson installers commonly package the required files internally, so the absence of that filename on the download page does not mean the package is unrelated.
5. Install Epson software correctly
- Disconnect the USB printer cable if the Epson installer requests it.
- Close printing applications.
- Right-click the Epson installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Connect or power on the printer only when instructed.
- Restart Windows after setup finishes.
Try the program or print a test page.
To print a test page:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Epson printer.
- Select Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
If the test page prints and the original application opens without the DLL message, the Epson package was repaired successfully.
If the Epson installer will not run
Very old Epson software may have been designed for Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7. Compatibility mode can sometimes help the installer:
- Right-click the Epson setup file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the oldest Windows version appropriate for the package.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer again.
Compatibility mode cannot make an unsupported kernel-level driver safe or functional. If the printer is obsolete, look for a newer Epson driver or use a supported generic printer driver.

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
If epnutx22.dll existed previously and then disappeared, Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined it.
To inspect Microsoft Defender’s history:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving Epson software or the DLL.
Microsoft explains the available actions in Protection History.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only if:
- It came from a verified Epson installation package.
- The detection is confirmed as a false positive.
- The file’s location and publisher are consistent with the Epson installation.
The safer approach is usually to reinstall the complete Epson package from the official Epson support portal. If the newly installed file is detected again, submit the suspected false positive to the security vendor instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

Fix 3: Install the correct driver and remove stale entries
Time needed: 10 to 25 minutes
A printer can appear installed while Windows is still using an old or incomplete Epson driver. This can happen after a failed upgrade, a printer replacement, or repeated driver installations.
Remove duplicate printer entries
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Remove duplicate Epson entries.
- Restart Windows.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for Epson entries with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove unrelated USB or printer devices unless you know they belong to the failed Epson installation.
Then reinstall the exact Epson package. If the printer works over USB, try another USB port and avoid connecting through an unpowered hub during setup.
Windows also provides built-in driver management:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete Epson driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when available.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Epson installer again.
If Windows says the driver is in use, remove the printer from Printers & scanners, restart, and repeat the process.
When you are manually hunting through multiple driver packages and trying to determine which device driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what needs attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the exact Epson package remains the definitive repair for an Epson-owned DLL.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
SFC and DISM are useful when Windows itself has broader component corruption. They are not the primary repair for an Epson application DLL, and SFC may correctly report no problems because epnutx22.dll is not a protected Windows resource.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and test the Epson software.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Restart, run DISM again, and review the CBS log if deeper Windows repair is needed.
If SFC reports no problems but epnutx22.dll is still missing, return to the Epson package reinstall. SFC does not normally restore third-party Epson files.
When repeated DISM and SFC runs leave you guessing about which Windows components changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show the issues it identifies; its free scan shows what needs attention, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Epson software remains the direct fix for this application DLL.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes
Use System Restore if the printer worked before a Windows update, driver installation, security change, or other system modification.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the DLL error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be removed or reverted.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore normally does not remove personal documents, but it can revert installed programs, drivers, settings, and updates. After Windows restarts, test the Epson printer.
If no restore point exists, continue with a clean Epson reinstall instead.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration-related functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for repairing missing or corrupted DLL files.
There is no reliable evidence that epnutx22.dll is an ActiveX or COM server that requires registration. Do not run:
regsvr32 epnutx22.dll
unless Epson documentation for the exact software package specifically instructs you to do so.
A registration error after running the command does not prove that the file is damaged. It may simply mean that the DLL was never designed to be registered.

Avoid DLL download sites and random file-sharing pages. A replacement can have:

- LESS FREQUENT INK REPLACEMENT — Replacement ink bottles don't have to be changed nearly as often as ink cartridges¹; Color printer lets you print up to 4,500 black and white pages and 7,200 color³

- Malware or altered code.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- An incompatible Epson version.
- Missing dependent files.
- A fake publisher or misleading filename.
- A location that Windows does not search for this application.
Windows searches for DLLs according to defined rules that depend on the application and its directories. Microsoft documents this in Dynamic-Link Library Search Order.
Even copying a genuine file into System32 may not repair the application. It can also cause a different Epson program or unrelated application to load the wrong copy.
If a verified Epson installer contains the DLL, an advanced user may recover it within that same package and place it in the application’s expected directory. Reinstalling the complete package is safer.
Common causes of epnutx22.dll errors
| Likely cause | What usually helps |
|---|---|
| Incomplete Epson installation | Remove and reinstall the full package |
| Epson software removed but printer entries remain | Remove stale entries and reinstall |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection History, then reinstall from Epson |
| Wrong driver or architecture | Match the printer package to Windows and the application |
| Missing dependency | Reinstall the complete Epson software rather than one DLL |
| Old unsupported printer | Try a supported Epson or generic driver |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM and SFC |
| Recent update or driver change | Consider System Restore |
| Suspicious file in an unexpected folder | Scan it and verify its publisher |
The exact printer models that shipped with this file cannot be confirmed reliably from public evidence. Similarly, public records disagree about some version, size, and architecture details. Treat those database records as clues, not as a universal Epson specification.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Capture the complete error and identify the program that displays it. The message may say that epnutx22.dll itself is missing, or that a dependent module could not be found even though the named DLL exists.
Then check:
- Event Viewer
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
-
Look for an error at the time of the failure.
-
The executable’s location
- Note which Epson program or installer is attempting to load the file.
-
A file found in an unexpected directory should be scanned before use.

FAQ
Is epnutx22.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows system component. It is associated with old Epson printer software and the EPSON Color Printing Plugin.
Is epnutx22.dll a Microsoft runtime file?
No. It is not established as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET component. Reinstall those products only if the complete error identifies one of them as a missing dependency.
Should I download epnutx22.dll separately?
No. Obtain the complete Epson printer package from the official Epson support portal. A standalone download can be malicious, incompatible, or incomplete.
Does regsvr32 fix this file?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs designed for registration, and there is no reliable evidence that this Epson DLL requires that process.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the DLL exists?
The named DLL may be present while one of its dependent DLLs is missing. Reinstalling the complete Epson package is more reliable than copying the named file.
Will SFC restore epnutx22.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows resources. It may repair Windows components that affect installation, but it does not generally restore Epson application files.
Is a file named epnutx22.dll in System32 genuine?
Not necessarily. The folder location does not prove ownership. Scan the file and verify its publisher where possible. The trusted source is the matching Epson installation package.
What if my Epson printer is no longer supported?
Check whether Epson provides a newer package for your Windows release. If not, try a supported generic printer driver or replace the abandoned software. Compatibility mode may help an installer, but it cannot make an unsupported driver reliable.
