Error 0x87E1000C usually means Xbox cannot correctly access, install, or launch a particular game or app. The safest high-value fix is to restart the console, then reinstall the affected title to the Xbox’s internal storage rather than immediately deleting saves or resetting the console. Microsoft documented that workaround for some titles in an Xbox Insider Beta release note on April 5, 2023.
Start with the low-risk checks below. The pattern of failures—one title, several titles on one drive, or nearly everything—determines how far you need to go.
Quick fix
- Quit the game or app: highlight it, press the Menu button, and choose Quit.
- Restart the Xbox from Xbox button > Profile & system > Power (or Power options) > Restart console.
- Check Xbox service status and install any pending console or game updates.
- If the error remains, uninstall only the affected game or app, set internal storage as the default installation location, and reinstall it.
- Launch the base game before reinstalling optional add-ons, texture packs, or other extra content.
Microsoft’s documented workaround was to delete the affected content, change the default installation location to internal storage, and reinstall the title: Xbox Insider release notes, April 5, 2023.

Microsoft described 0x87E1000C as affecting “some titles” that would not install or launch. That establishes a title-access or installation failure, but not one single confirmed cause. The code does not by itself prove that the internal drive is failing, that an external drive is defective, or that a license is corrupt.

The reported incident was tied to an Xbox Insider Beta build (OS version XB_FLT_2304NI\22621.4067.230403-2200), not a statement that every retail Xbox was affected at the same time. The practical diagnostic variable is where the title is installed and whether other titles fail.
Use the failure pattern to choose the next step

Quit the title and restart the Xbox
Quit and relaunch
Highlight the game or app, press Menu, select Quit, and launch it again. This removes a suspended or stalled process without touching the installation or saved data.
Normal restart
Press the Xbox button, open Profile & system, choose Power or Power options, and select Restart console. Dashboard labels can vary slightly by system version.

Full power cycle
- Hold the console’s physical power button for about 10 seconds, until it shuts down.
- Wait briefly, then turn it on.
- Try the title again.
This is a commonly recommended troubleshooting step; Microsoft Q&A guidance describes the same procedure. It can clear a temporary system state, but it cannot repair physically failing storage. See Xbox power-cycle guidance.
Check Xbox services and updates
Visit the official Xbox status page before deleting or reinstalling anything. An outage can interfere with sign-in, downloads, ownership checks, and online launches, although it does not explain every instance of this code.

Update the console
Use Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Update console. Microsoft documents this path for Xbox One; wording may differ on newer dashboards. Do not interrupt an update. The documented path is also listed by Microsoft Support.
Update the game or app
Open My games & apps > Manage > Updates. A title installed during an interrupted update may need a clean reinstall if repeated updates fail.

This is the strongest evidence-backed fix for 0x87E1000C. Internal storage removes the USB connection and external-drive file system from the launch path.
Before uninstalling
- Confirm the title appears in Ready to install, your owned-games library, or the relevant subscription library.
- Keep the disc available if it is a disc-based game; uninstalling does not remove the disc requirement.
- Ensure the console is online if the title requires license verification or cloud synchronization.
- Check that internal storage has enough free space.
Uninstall only the affected title
Use My games & apps > Manage > Storage devices, select the drive, open Games and apps, select the title, and choose Uninstall. Do not choose an option that deletes saved data. Uninstalling the game is a different action from deleting local saves.
Set internal storage as the destination
In the storage-management screen, choose Change installation locations (or similarly worded control) and set the console’s internal storage as the default. Labels vary between Xbox One and Series X|S dashboards.

Reinstall in stages
- Install the base game or app first.
- Launch it before installing optional texture packs, expansions, language packs, or mods.
- Add updates and add-ons one at a time, testing after major additions.
Microsoft’s 2023 release note specifically recommended deleting the affected content, changing the default location to internal storage, and reinstalling. That historical workaround is not proof that every current occurrence has the same cause.
Try moving an existing installation
Moving can save bandwidth, but it is an alternative rather than Microsoft’s documented reinstall procedure. Open My games & apps, highlight the title, press Menu, choose Manage game and add-ons, select the title, then choose Move or copy and select internal storage. Test the game after the move.
Check external storage
- Power down the Xbox before disconnecting and reconnecting a USB drive.
- Try another USB port and avoid USB hubs.
- Confirm the drive appears under Storage devices.
- Test another title installed on that drive.
- Move the affected title internally and compare the result.
USB HDDs and SSDs commonly store Xbox One and backward-compatible games. Some Series X|S-optimized titles require internal storage or a compatible expansion card. An official expansion card is different from a standard USB drive.
Do not format the drive as an early fix: formatting can erase every installed game and app. Consider replacing it only when multiple titles fail from that drive, it repeatedly disconnects, or it disappears from storage settings. One isolated error does not justify buying new storage.

Digital games
- Sign in with the account that purchased the game.
- Confirm any subscription providing access is active.
- Keep the console online for license verification.
- Ensure the purchasing account is present on the console.
- If game sharing is used, verify the correct Home Xbox designation.

Disc-based games
- Insert the correct disc and confirm the console recognizes it.
- Check for obvious dirt or damage; do not use abrasive materials.
- Confirm that installation and required updates can complete.
- Use the correct edition or disc for the installed title.
Remove and re-add your profile
Try this when several digital titles fail for one account, another account can launch the same title, or sign-in and license prompts behave inconsistently. Removing a profile does not delete the Microsoft account, but you will need its email address and password to add it again. Cloud-saved progress should resynchronize after sign-in; do not delete local saves unless you understand the consequences and have confirmed synchronization.
Run proportionate network checks
If downloads, sign-in, or Store access are also failing, use Settings > Network > Network settings > Test network connection. Restart the router only when those broader symptoms exist. A temporary wired connection can help distinguish Wi-Fi instability. Check NAT and Xbox service status before changing DNS settings; custom DNS is not a general fix for this code.
Reset while keeping games and apps
Use this late in the process, after confirming cloud synchronization and trying an internal reinstall:
Settings > System > Console info > Reset console > Reset and keep my games & apps
This refreshes system software while preserving installed games and apps, but it can remove accounts, preferences, and local configuration. You will likely need to sign in again. It is not guaranteed to fix a failing storage device or defective console, and it is not the same as preserving every local save in every situation.
When to suspect hardware
The code alone is not evidence of hardware failure. Escalate to Xbox Support when the problem is broad, repeatable, and independent of the title or storage location—especially if:
- Several games fail from internal storage.
- Titles repeatedly become corrupted or disappear.
- The console cannot reliably detect internal or external storage.
- Installations stop, reset, or vanish.
- The Xbox freezes, shuts down, or shows additional storage errors.
- A clean reinstall to internal storage fails repeatedly.
Contact Xbox Support with the exact code, affected titles, storage location, console model, and whether other games work. If the failure began after an Insider update, check current Insider release notes and submit a problem report through the Xbox Insider app.
