On a Java Edition dedicated server, you can enter commands in player chat or the server console. In chat, begin with a slash—for example, /difficulty easy. You also need sufficient permission: server owners generally have it by default, while players on someone else’s server should ask its administrator. Commands and server settings can differ by edition and version, so check the documentation for the server you actually run.

How do I use commands on my Minecraft server?

Minecraft commands can run through player chat, a server console, command blocks, or data and behavior packs, depending on the platform. For the player-chat examples in this guide, type the command with a leading slash. The server console is another option, but its exact input conventions can depend on the server implementation or host; follow the instructions for your setup rather than assuming chat syntax applies unchanged.

  1. Choose where to enter it. Open chat while connected to the server, or use the server console or another supported command interface.
  2. Type the command and its arguments. For example, /difficulty easy requests Easy difficulty. Arguments supply values such as a player name, destination, or setting.
  3. Use suggestions to check syntax. Minecraft’s command guide notes that autocomplete and command suggestions can help identify available commands and arguments.
  4. Check the result. A mistyped command returns an error and does not run, according to Minecraft’s command guide. An error is not confirmation that the requested change took effect.

Commands are not a substitute for configuration documentation. For example, the official Java server setup guide discusses options in server.properties, while later releases may change how particular settings are configured.

What permissions do server commands require?

Minecraft’s command guide says that “In multiplayer, you’ll need to have a high-enough permission level to be able to use commands.” Owners of their own server or Realm generally have permission by default; if you are playing on somebody else’s server, ask its administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

Use commands that affect other players only when you are authorized to administer the server. In particular, operator promotion changes a player’s authority, while kicking or banning affects their ability to remain or return.

What are the basic Minecraft server commands?

These examples come from Minecraft’s command guide. Enter them in chat with the slash shown. Confirm syntax for your edition and server version, especially when a command has targets or more complex arguments.

Command What it does Important note
/op <playername> Makes the named player an operator of the server. Grant operator status only to someone you trust with administrative authority.
/kick <playername> Removes the named player from the server. This removes them from the current server session; it is not the same as a ban.
/ban <playername> Bans the named player from the server. This affects their access to the server; use it only as an authorized administrator.
/difficulty easy Sets difficulty to Easy. The guide lists peaceful, easy, normal, and hard as choices.
/weather clear Sets clear weather. Example provided by Minecraft’s command guide.
/time set day Sets the time to day. Example provided by Minecraft’s command guide.
/teleport [target player] <destination> Teleports a player or players to a destination. Check the target and destination syntax supported by your server version.

How do I make someone an operator or remove a player?

Make a player an operator

Use /op <playername> to make that player an operator. Because this grants operator authority, verify the player name and ensure the person should have administrative access before running it.

Kick a player

Use /kick <playername> to remove a player from the server. This is a removal from the server, not the ban action described below.

Ban a player

Use /ban <playername> to ban a player from the server. A ban changes that player’s access, so reserve it for administrators acting under the server’s rules.

Do commands and settings differ by Minecraft version?

Yes. Java and Bedrock server software are distinct, and commands or setup instructions should not be assumed interchangeable. Minecraft’s official server download page distinguishes Java requirements from the operating-system requirements for a Bedrock dedicated server. For Java multiplayer, Minecraft’s help instructions say the game version should match the server version.

Configuration names can change between Java releases. For example, the official Java Edition 1.21.9 release notes describe several server properties moving to game rules: allow-nether in favor of allowEnteringNetherUsingPortals, spawn-monsters in favor of spawnMonsters, enable-command-block in favor of commandBlocksEnabled, and pvp in favor of the pvp game rule. These are version-specific changes, not universal instructions for every server.

For settings such as game mode, difficulty, spawn protection, Nether access, PvP, or maximum players, consult the official documentation for the exact Java server release you operate before editing configuration. Do not assume a setting mentioned in older setup guidance retains the same name or location in a newer release.

Should I host the server myself or use a hosted option?

For command use, the important difference is who handles server setup and infrastructure. Minecraft’s setup guide warns that self-hosting may involve home-network configuration, and presents Realms as an alternative with automatic backups. It does not establish a general price or performance comparison between these options.

Consideration Self-hosted Java server Realms option
Setup responsibility You handle the server setup described in Minecraft’s Java server guide. Presented by Minecraft as an alternative for a personal server.
Network configuration May require home-network configuration, according to Minecraft’s setup guide. The cited setup guide does not state a comparable network configuration requirement.
Backups The cited setup guide does not establish a default automatic-backup arrangement. Minecraft’s setup guide describes automatic backups.
Control and configuration The Java server guide covers server files and settings such as server.properties; details vary by release. The cited setup guide does not provide a directly comparable list of configuration controls.
