Back to the Dawn supports combat, stealth, and social manipulation, but the available sources do not establish that one is easiest or best. Treat escape routes as plans with different requirements—not as paths to rush into blindly.
Learn the rules before taking risks
The player-maintained Back to the Dawn wiki says the Prison Manual is available from the in-game menu under Tutorial. Read it before you make risky decisions, then return to it when a system or prompt is unclear. The wiki also reports three difficulty options, but the available description does not specify exactly how each changes individual mechanics. Choose according to the challenge you want rather than assuming a particular setting changes hunger, combat, or another system in a specific way.
Choose an approach and develop it coherently
Clouded Leopard Entertainment describes direct combat, stealth, and social manipulation as ways to play. The publisher also says players develop skills and craft tools to suit their style. Use that as a practical guide: decide how you want to handle obstacles, then invest effort in skills and tools that fit that approach. You can mix methods, but do not expect a source-backed ranking of which build is easiest or most effective.
- Combat: Prepare to confront obstacles directly when that fits your plan.
- Stealth: Look for ways to avoid or bypass confrontation.
- Social manipulation: Consider how conversations and relationships can help or complicate your plans.
These are broad approaches, not guarantees that every obstacle can be solved in the same way.

- FOX OR PANTHER? - There are two different protagonists in this gripping story. First, we have Thomas the fox, a reporter who has been framed and thrown into prison for a crime he didn’t commit. He must work together with his lawyer on the outside to collect evidence and save himself. The black panther Bob, on the other hand, is an undercover agent who’s simply tired of everything. But a personal tragedy brings him back for one last job inside the prison. Both Thomas and Bob are hunting for the truth. But who can you trust in a place like this?
- A MASSIVE PRISON - This is a truly massive role-playing game with an immersive narrative of over 500,000 words, more than 100 handcrafted quests, multiple escape routes, and several possible endings. On your journey through the dark belly of the prison system, you will encounter 47 unique inmates, each with their own personality and agenda. Getting to know them is a must if you want to succeed, and it’s also one of the greatest joys of Back to the Dawn.
- FIND YOUR OWN PLAYSTYLE - Every player will find their own unique way to tackle the challenges in Back to the Dawn. The game is absolutely packed with possibilities! Do you prefer to let your fists do the talking, hide in the shadows, or smooth-talk your fellow inmates to manipulate them? Will you be a model prisoner and keep your head down, or will you unleash chaos? Perhaps you’ll even join one of the game’s three gangs? No matter your approach, you’ll need to develop your skills, craft tools that suit your style, and claw your way out of this hellhole for good!
- LANGUAGES - English, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese ingame text.
- INCLUDED BONUSES – The physical version includes all current and future DLCs, a booklet, and a reversible cover.
Explore the prison before committing to a route
Clouded Leopard Entertainment says that “Every inch of Boulderton Prison might hold the key to your escape, from your prison cell to the infirmary, to the sewers and even the rooftops.” Take that as encouragement to investigate rather than as a promise that every location is required for every escape. The publisher describes routes as having different risks and rewards, so gather clues and notice what a route appears to demand before spending time preparing for it.
Some discoveries may be indirect. For example, a player-maintained wiki entry says that reading the third book in the Game of Kings series unlocks a wingsuit crafting recipe; its sewer guide describes an electrical-room puzzle. These examples illustrate why it can pay to inspect the prison and follow clues, but they are not a complete escape walkthrough.

- Flip the game with hidden spells and mystery moments: The Mystery Expansion is the card game expansion adults and teens actually can not predict round to round. Each player gets one secret spell card at the start, kept face-down from opponents and activated anytime during play. Spell cards run separately from the main Payback deck, so the base game stays perfectly balanced while you use game night cards to hide, disrupt, and strike at the worst possible moment. Discard after use. Every round resets. The chaos does not.
- Surprise, disrupt, and change the whole game: No two Mystery spell cards do the same thing, and no one at the table knows what is coming until the moment it hits. Each card carries a unique one-time ability that players can drop at any point during the game. Mystery Event Cards go bigger, triggering chaos that affects every player at once and reshapes rounds nobody thought were at risk. Effects can stack with other Payback expansions, creating explosive, unpredictable situations every single session. The kind of competitive card game moments friends actually argue about.
- Mystery Events Create Unpredictable Chaos: The expansion includes Mystery Event Cards that trigger surprise twists no one can anticipate. An event might rescue a trailing player, flip a strong lead, or drop something hilariously chaotic into the middle of a heated round. Each activation reshapes the session on the spot, ensuring no two plays ever unfold the same way.
- Premium quality built for repeated play: Every Mystery Expansion card is made from durable high-quality cardstock designed to hold up through hundreds of shuffles and intense game night sessions. Compact enough to store inside your Payback box, drop in a bag, or take anywhere. A must for party card games, travel card games for adults, fun family game night collections, and really fun games that actually fit in a pocket.
- Expand your Payback universe: If predictable game nights are your problem, Mystery fixes that. This is not a filler for a stale adult card game rotation. It is 12 unique Mystery Expansion cards plugged straight into Payback Original. Compatible with all Payback expansions including Dark Wizard and NSFW editions. Collect all three and stack the chaos across every game night. Requires Payback Original to play. Base game not included.
Make relationships part of your plan
The publisher describes three gangs and says inmates can be befriended, fought, bullied, or robbed. Treat those interactions as strategic choices: an ally or adversary may fit one plan but undermine another. Consider how you want to approach your intended route before deciding how to handle people you meet. The available descriptions do not establish a universally best faction, ally, or relationship strategy.
Keep survival advice within what is established
The official descriptions establish the broad prison-survival premise, but they do not provide verified hunger, fatigue, sanity, or health thresholds, decay rates, resource costs, or an optimal daily schedule. Avoid planning around precise numbers unless the current in-game manual or a reliable, mechanic-specific source confirms them. If a meter or prompt needs attention during play, use the displayed information and the manual rather than relying on an unsupported universal threshold.

- Take the fight straight to the enemy or protect a vital defensive point. How you decide to save the galaxy is entirely up to you.
- Four unique races to command - Lead the Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, and Tyranids to victory in multiplayer and experience the brutal carnage and intensity of front line combat across richly detailed and destructible battlegrounds
- Command the Blood Ravens in combat and become the most battle hardened strike force in the Galaxy. Unlock special abilities and equip unique war gear to turn the tide of battle.
Use the game’s scale as a reason to investigate
Clouded Leopard Entertainment’s 2026 Nintendo listing describes over 100 handcrafted quests, multiple escape routes, several possible endings, and over 500,000 words of narrative. Those publisher-listed figures suggest that a first run need not uncover everything. Focus on the route and relationships that interest you, and let the prison’s clues guide your next steps instead of trying to follow every lead at once.
