Europa Universalis 5 Review: Ambitious Simulation, Uneven AI

Europa Universalis V’s historical scope and interconnected systems are ambitious, but a pre-launch review raised concerns about the AI. Here’s what prospective players should know.

Europa Universalis V is a released historical grand strategy game built around a sweeping, interconnected simulation. Its central appeal is also its main challenge: the systems promise considerable depth, but PC Gamer’s pre-release review argued that the AI struggled to make that complexity interesting. That criticism applies to the review build, not necessarily the game’s later updates. Whether EU5 is a fit depends on how much you value simulation breadth—and how much patience you have for learning it.

What is Europa Universalis V?

Europa Universalis V is the fifth main entry in Paradox Interactive’s historical grand strategy series, developed by Paradox Tinto. The publisher frames it as a world-spanning game covering almost five hundred years of history, with the player guiding a nation through political and historical change. That is the publisher’s description of the game’s scope, not a guarantee that every campaign follows a fixed historical path. Paradox’s game page and purchase page identify the game and developer.

Paradox announced EU5 as the next installment in the franchise and said it was made with the series’ audience in mind, incorporating feedback from public discussion. The game launched on November 4, 2025, according to the publisher’s release-date announcement. Steam’s listing identifies single-player, online PvP, and online co-op modes.

What makes EU5 appealing?

A broad historical simulation

The game’s defining promise is scale: a long historical span and a simulation in which many systems are intended to interact. For players who enjoy grand strategy as an evolving model of states and societies, that ambition is the draw. The publisher’s description establishes the intended scope, though it does not by itself establish how successfully each system works in play.

Connected systems—and a steep learning burden

PC Gamer described the game as an ambitious historical simulation with highly interlocking mechanics. That density can reward players who want to understand how decisions in one area affect others. It can also make the game demanding to learn; a feature-rich simulation is not automatically a clear one. The available review assessment supports the game’s complexity, but does not establish exactly how accessible the current version is to newcomers.

How well does the AI handle the complexity?

PC Gamer’s review, published October 31, 2025, before the November 4 launch, praised the scale of EU5’s simulation but argued that its complexity outpaced the AI’s ability to make the game interesting and dynamic. This is a critic’s assessment of the pre-release review build. It should not be treated as a finding about every later patch or as a universal verdict on the AI.

Europa Universalis III: Complete - PC
  • Flexible Nation Building – decide on your type of government, the structure of your society, your trade politics and much, much more
  • Highly detailed and interactive cities which are unique for each culture
  • Use historical Ideas and recruit Great Men in order to make your country flourish the way you want it to
  • Co-operative multiplayer over LAN or Internet

For a prospective player, that distinction matters. If the appeal is watching the world develop through capable rival states and emergent competition, the pre-release criticism is a meaningful caution. If you are more interested in exploring a complex historical sandbox on your own terms, the same issue may matter less. The sources available here do not establish whether later updates materially changed AI behavior.

What do players think?

A 2026 search-result snapshot of Steam’s English-language reviews showed “Mixed” sentiment: 69% positive from 13,633 reviews. Steam’s listing also noted periods of off-topic review activity. This is a dated snapshot, not a live score or a representative survey of all players; review totals and sentiment can change. Check the Steam store page for the current listing and rating.

Who should consider playing it?

  • Consider it if you want a large-scale historical strategy game and enjoy learning how interconnected systems shape a campaign.
  • Be cautious if you expect a straightforward strategy game, or if convincing AI competition is central to your enjoyment. The latter concern comes from a review of the pre-launch build, and its status in later versions is not established here.
  • Look for more current evidence if your decision depends on performance on particular hardware, the state of the latest patch, or the value of a specific edition or add-on. Those details are not established by the cited material.

Verdict

Europa Universalis V is an ambitious, systems-heavy grand strategy game whose appeal rests on the breadth of its historical simulation. The clearest caveat in the available critical assessment is that the AI did not make the complexity compelling in PC Gamer’s review build. That is worth weighing, but it is not a verdict on the post-launch game as it stands in 2026: patch-level AI behavior, current performance, and edition value are not established here. EU5 is most promising for players drawn to deep simulation; anyone who needs strong AI or a low learning curve should seek evidence on the current build before deciding.
