In EVERSPACE 2, the most dependable way to get Mainframe Components is to complete Location Challenges. You can also find components while exploring certain puzzles, special wrecks, and containers. Every three components combine into one Mainframe Expansion, which you can use for ship upgrades. The Steam Community beginner guide describes these sources and the conversion.

Location Challenges
Prioritize each location’s challenge: the beginner guide says solving it awards a Mainframe Component. The challenge is shown when you enter a system. A developer also confirmed in a 2022 Steam discussion that components are awarded through Location Challenges: Mainframe Components.

Exploration rewards
Challenges are not the only source. The guide also points to rewards in certain puzzles, special wrecks, and containers. Search locations as you explore rather than assuming the challenge is the sole component source.
How to track locations and use components
Visit a location to reveal its map information; the guide says location details are not shown on the map before you have been there. Check the in-game map and the descriptions of your System Scanner perks for available tracking information. An older developer discussion mentions Khala’s System Scanner upgrade, but does not establish the current perk level or exact UI steps.

Once you have three Mainframe Components, combine them into a Mainframe Expansion for ship upgrades. The guide describes the three-to-one conversion but does not specify a current component total across the game or provide a verified location-by-location checklist.

- Review each visited location’s tracking and confirm its Location Challenge is complete.
- Return to locations with puzzles, special wrecks, or containers and inspect reward areas and containers carefully. Players have reported finding a component left in a container, but this is player-reported troubleshooting, not a confirmed universal cause.
- If your total is still short despite apparent 100% completion, consult a current location list and consider contacting the game’s support team with your save file. In a May 2024 Steam support discussion, a developer asked a player to provide save files for investigation and pointed them to a wiki location list: Missing 1 Mainframe Component even after all Locations show 100%.
There was also a historical location-completion counting issue: the official 1.0 announcement recorded a fix involving secrets after components had been placed in Zharkov, Khaït Nebula, and Drake. That release note documents a past fix, not evidence that the same issue is currently present. Read the official 1.0-era announcement.
