There is no single mandatory order for every Bloodborne boss: the main world branches, several fights are optional, the ending changes the final encounter, and Chalice Dungeons follow a separate progression track. For a first playthrough, the sequence below offers a practical route through the base game while marking required, optional, and ending-dependent fights. It is a guide, not a fixed difficulty ranking.
Practical first-playthrough boss order
This route includes the commonly listed optional base-game bosses alongside the story path. Optional placements are convenient suggestions; they do not mean every fight is required or that the game locks players into this exact sequence.

- Cleric Beast — Optional early encounter in Central Yharnam.
- Father Gascoigne — The first required story boss; defeating him opens access toward Cathedral Ward.
- Blood-starved Beast — Optional boss in Old Yharnam. The cited access routes make either this fight or Cleric Beast a practical prerequisite for reaching Vicar Amelia.
- Vicar Amelia — Required story boss at the Grand Cathedral.
- Witch of Hemwick — Optional boss in a side area.
- Shadow of Yharnam — Required boss in the Forbidden Woods.
- Rom, the Vacuous Spider — Required boss at Byrgenwerth; defeating Rom changes the world state.
- Darkbeast Paarl — Optional boss in Yahar’gul.
- The One Reborn — Required boss in Yahar’gul.
- Martyr Logarius — Optional boss at Forsaken Castle Cainhurst.
- Amygdala — Optional boss in the Nightmare Frontier.
- Celestial Emissary — Optional boss in Upper Cathedral Ward.
- Micolash, Host of the Nightmare — Required boss in the Nightmare of Mensis.
- Mergo’s Wet Nurse — Required final boss of the Nightmare progression.
- Gehrman, the First Hunter — The ending confrontation, depending on the player’s choice.
- Moon Presence — An ending-dependent encounter; it is not fought in every ending.
What is actually required for the story?
For the shortest clear story route, focus on Father Gascoigne → Vicar Amelia → Shadow of Yharnam → Rom, the Vacuous Spider → The One Reborn → Micolash, Host of the Nightmare → Mergo’s Wet Nurse → Gehrman, the First Hunter. Moon Presence depends on the ending choice.
There is an early access wrinkle: Cleric Beast and Blood-starved Beast are individually optional, but the cited routes to Amelia make defeating one of them necessary to open access. Calling each boss optional does not mean the early route has no prerequisite.

Optional base-game bosses
The commonly listed optional fights in the base game are:
- Cleric Beast
- Blood-starved Beast
- Witch of Hemwick
- Darkbeast Paarl
- Martyr Logarius
- Amygdala
- Celestial Emissary
- Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos
“Optional” means these fights are not part of the ordinary required story sequence. It does not mean every boss is available at any time or without route prerequisites.

The Old Hunters DLC boss order
Keep The Old Hunters separate from the required base-game route. Its practical internal progression is:
- Ludwig
- Living Failures
- Lady Maria
- Orphan of Kos
Laurence, the First Vicar is an optional DLC encounter. None of these DLC bosses is required to finish the base-game story. PlayStation lists The Old Hunters as a Bloodborne add-on. Playing the DLC late can be a useful recommendation, but it is not a stated game requirement.

Chalice Dungeon bosses are a separate track
Do not treat Chalice bosses as the next steps in one continuous surface-world timeline. Chalice Dungeons have their own progression, and named encounters may also appear outside the dungeons. PlayStation describes them as “Ever-changing Chalice Dungeons to Explore,” a network of underground ruins entered with holy chalices.
Chalice encounters include bosses such as Undead Giant, Watchdog of the Old Lords, Pthumerian Descendant, Bloodletting Beast, Amygdala, and Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen. The fixed Pthumeru Ihyll route ends with Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen. A complete layer-by-layer order across every fixed and Root dungeon is not established here, so this guide does not present the examples as an exhaustive Chalice list.

How to use this order
- Follow the required story sequence if your priority is finishing the main narrative.
- Use the practical list to fit optional areas into a first playthrough, rather than treating its numbering as a universal difficulty scale.
- Choose DLC and Chalice content as separate branches; neither belongs in the base-game required sequence.
- Expect the ending choice to determine whether Moon Presence is part of your final boss run.
