Dragon Age: The Veilguard has seven companions, but no official source ranks them from best to worst. This list is an editorial, story-first order: companion characterization and quest resolution matter most, with romance and combat role as secondary considerations. It is not a power ranking or a claim about player consensus; a favorite romance, party build, or character arc could put your list in a different order.
How this ranking works
BioWare and Xbox identify the seven-member roster and describe each companion’s background and abilities, but do not publish a ranking or comparative gameplay data. The placements below reflect one consistent judgment about character and story, informed by romance and battle role rather than a claim that one companion is objectively stronger. Xbox Wire’s companion overview introduces the roster, while EA’s romance guide confirms all seven are romance options.
Every Veilguard companion ranked
1. Emmrich
Emmrich earns the top spot for the unusual combination of scholarly curiosity, warmth, and a life spent studying death. As a Mourn Watch necromancer accompanied by Manfred, he brings an immediately distinctive perspective to the team. His abilities can hinder enemies and heal allies, giving him a useful support identity that fits his careful, learned persona. The appeal here is the character concept and the way his role gives the group a different emotional and intellectual register.
2. Davrin
A Grey Warden and monster hunter, Davrin has a classic Dragon Age foundation, but his bond with griffon Assan gives that role a memorable personal dimension. The pair’s combined attacks and protective support make their combat identity easy to read, while Davrin’s care for Assan adds tenderness to a life built around danger. He ranks just below Emmrich because the Warden-and-griffon pairing is compelling, even if the premise is less unexpected.

3. Harding
Harding’s return as a dwarven scout is made more intriguing by the unexpected magical powers she now wields. She stands out from the roster through that contrast: a practical archer with abilities that unsettle expectations. Her arrows can stagger foes and damage armor, lending her a clear tactical niche. Her placement reflects the strength of that character turn and her established presence in the series, rather than a claim that her combat kit is universally best.
4. Lucanis
Lucanis is an Antivan Crow assassin known as the Demon of Vyrantium, a title and faction that give him an arresting entrance. His dual daggers deal necrotic damage, and he can also support allies, creating a combat profile that is more than straightforward offense. The assassin identity is stylish and distinct; he lands mid-list because the concept is strongest when paired with the personal story behind it, and this ranking gives slightly more weight to the other companions’ broader emotional texture.

5. Bellara
Bellara is a Veil Jumper fascinated by ancient Elvhenan, a natural fit for a story shaped by the Fade and the past. She manipulates the Fade and uses electricity and control magic, so her abilities reinforce her connection to forces that are both mysterious and dangerous. That combination makes her an appealing lore-focused companion. She sits lower here because the ranking prioritizes the overall character arc and resolution, not simply the promise of a compelling subject or magical theme.
6. Neve
Neve is a private detective and Shadow Dragon from Minrathous, bringing a grounded investigative outlook to a team of larger-than-life specialists. Her ice magic slows and freezes enemies, which gives her a precise control role in battle. The detective angle is a strong foundation for a companion, and her faction ties offer a clear connection to the setting. In this story-first ordering, she falls toward the bottom because her appealing profession and combat identity do not outweigh the more distinctive character contrasts above her.

7. Taash
Taash, a Qunari dragon hunter allied with the Lords of Fortune, closes this particular list—not because the official sources establish a weakness, but because this ranking gives more weight to the character and story qualities that resonate most with its author. Dual axes and fire abilities make Taash’s battle style direct and forceful, while dragon hunting offers an immediately legible specialty. Players who value an aggressive combat feel or connect more strongly with Taash’s story may reasonably place them much higher.
Romance and choosing your team
All seven companions can be romance options, according to EA’s guide. The game allows players to begin romances with multiple companions before eventually committing to one partner; character preferences and, for some romances, story choices can affect access or approval. That makes romance a meaningful part of a companion’s appeal, but availability alone does not establish a best-to-worst order.

For battle, the official character descriptions identify different specialties rather than a universal winner: Bellara offers Fade manipulation and control, Davrin brings protection alongside Assan, Emmrich can hinder enemies and heal, Harding staggers and damages armor, Lucanis mixes necrotic attacks with support, Neve slows and freezes, and Taash brings fire and dual axes. Which companion is most useful depends on the party and approach you want to play.

PlayStation’s PS5 game page provides official bios and ability summaries for the roster. The descriptions help distinguish the companions, but they do not prove that one is strongest in every build or that a particular story ranking is universal.
