The practical mainline story order is DOOM (1993) → DOOM II → DOOM 64 → DOOM: The Dark Ages → DOOM (2016) → DOOM Eternal. DOOM 3 is a separate retelling, not a confirmed chapter in that sequence. If you mean literally every game, mobile spin-offs belong in a separate category because the available official sources do not establish where they fit in the story.
What order should I play the mainline DOOM games in?
- DOOM (1993)
- DOOM II
- DOOM 64
- DOOM: The Dark Ages
- DOOM (2016)
- DOOM Eternal
This is a practical story order, not a complete official timeline published as one definitive list. Bethesda describes DOOM 64 as a sequel to DOOM II, The Dark Ages as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, and DOOM Eternal as a sequel to DOOM (2016). The official description of The Dark Ages does not directly specify its placement relative to DOOM 64, so that transition is a convention for presenting the broad franchise sequence rather than an explicit connection established on the cited game pages. Why The Dark Ages comes before DOOM (2016)
Bethesda calls The Dark Ages “the prequel to the critically acclaimed DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal.” That makes its position before those two modern games clear, even though the official wording does not settle every link in the full chronology.
Where does DOOM 3 fit?
Play DOOM 3 as a separate retelling rather than inserting it into the mainline sequence. Bethesda’s anthology description calls it an “action-horror re-telling of the original DOOM.” Its associated expansions are Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission. The official sources cited here do not establish an exact position for those expansions within the broader series chronology. Bethesda Gear Store’s DOOM Anthology description

What counts as every DOOM game?
“Every game” can mean the core story entries, other games in a separate continuity, expansions, or spin-offs. Keep those categories distinct: packages and ports may combine or rename games, but that does not make them additional story chapters.
Mainline story entries
The six-game list above is the practical mainline sequence. It covers the original game, its direct follow-up, the sequel DOOM 64, and the later Slayer arc through The Dark Ages, DOOM (2016), and DOOM Eternal.

Retelling and expansions
DOOM 3 is a retelling. Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission are expansions associated with it, while The Ancient Gods expansions belong with DOOM Eternal. These add-ons are relevant to a fuller playthrough, but they are not separate core games in the six-entry list.
Spin-offs
DOOM RPG, DOOM II RPG, and DOOM Resurrection are examples of spin-offs. They fall outside the core PC and console sequence, and the official sources cited here do not give them reliable positions in that story chronology. A list that includes them should label them as spin-offs rather than assign a guessed place between mainline games.

Chronological order versus release order
Story order and release order answer different questions. The original DOOM was released on December 10, 1993, and DOOM 64 originally launched in 1997, but those dates do not by themselves establish the in-universe chronology. Bethesda’s anniversary article gives the original release date; Bethesda’s DOOM Anthology description gives DOOM 64’s original launch year.
Storefront names and bundles are another separate matter. In 2022, Bethesda said it was renaming Ultimate DOOM to DOOM (1993), packaging Final DOOM and Master Levels for DOOM II with DOOM II, and consolidating DOOM 3, Resurrection of Evil, and BFG Edition. Those catalog changes describe how games were organized for sale, not where they belong in the story. Bethesda’s Steam Store consolidation notice

Optional content for a more complete playthrough
- DOOM (1993): Bethesda’s anthology listing includes Thy Flesh Consumed.
- DOOM II: The listing includes Final DOOM and Master Levels for DOOM II.
- DOOM Eternal: The Deluxe Edition includes The Ancient Gods expansions.
- DOOM 3: The anthology listing names Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission.
These are add-ons or bundled content, not extra entries needed to understand the six-game mainline order. The listed inclusions refer to Bethesda’s anthology description; check a specific edition’s contents before buying because packages can differ.
Does the DOOM Anthology contain the same games in every edition?
No. The physical collection described by Bethesda in its August 8, 2024 post and the current digital bundle are different product configurations. The 2024 physical edition description lists DOOM (1993), DOOM II, DOOM 64, DOOM 3 and its expansions, DOOM (2016), and DOOM Eternal Deluxe Edition with The Ancient Gods expansions. It also describes an exclusive SteelBook case and a five-inch BFG replica with LED lights and a stand. Bethesda Gear Store: DOOM Anthology

Because those lineups differ, verify the platform, edition, region, and included games on the product page before purchasing. A collection’s title alone does not guarantee that it contains the same entries as another edition.
