The most far-reaching early decision is which city to save—Minrathous or Treviso—but later preparation and assignments also affect quests, companion availability, and the ending options you can reach.
How choices work in The Veilguard
Not every dialogue choice creates a major branch. Some choices mainly affect approval or follow-up dialogue; others change quests, party availability, companion outcomes, or the finale. The game does not import a Dragon Age Keep world state or a save from an earlier game. Instead, character creation asks about a few events from Inquisition. RPG Site’s full-game guide distinguishes major decisions from choices with smaller effects.
Character creation: choose a faction
Rook’s faction shapes interactions with NPCs and companions, and can unlock faction-specific dialogue or quest options. The Shadow Dragons, Antivan Crows, and Grey Wardens receive prominent reactivity; the Mourn Watch and Lords of Fortune also have substantial faction-specific responses. This is a role-playing and narrative choice, not a universally best build or route. RPG Site
The End of the Beginning: take Harding or Neve
During the prologue, Rook chooses either Harding or Neve to accompany them while disrupting Solas’s ritual. The choice does not change the ritual’s outcome. The companion Rook takes is injured, is unavailable for some early story party selections, and bears a visible scar for a time. Treat this as a temporary party-availability consequence, not a branch that changes the prologue’s resolution. RPG Site

Shadows Crossing: decide Mayor Julius’s fate
At D’Meta’s Crossing, Rook can spare Mayor Julius, leave him to die, or—if Rook is a Grey Warden—send him to the Wardens. The options lead to different appearances and quest content, but the documented differences are not material to the campaign.
- Spare him: This changes companion approval, and Julius can appear later at a Venatori gathering.
- Leave him: This opens the regional quest A Growing Corruption, including a Blighted Julius encounter.
- Send him to the Grey Wardens: This option is exclusive to a Grey Warden Rook and changes Julius’s later role in Lives Spared. RPG Site characterizes it as comparatively positive for Julius.
RPG Site’s choice guide details these outcomes.
Which city to aid: Minrathous or Treviso
After recruiting Davrin, Rook must choose which city to defend from attack. Neve asks Rook to aid Minrathous; Lucanis asks for help in Treviso. The city left unaided is blighted and remains changed for the rest of the game. This is the most consequential early branch: it affects the city, its faction, and the companion associated with it.

| What changes | City Rook aids | City left unaided |
|---|---|---|
| City and map | It avoids this decision’s blight consequences. | It is blighted; map areas are rearranged, and previously unlocked fast-travel beacons must be rediscovered. |
| Vendors and faction | The city’s faction does not take this decision’s reported hit. | The region’s faction vendor and several local vendors are lost; its faction loses 100 Faction Strength points, according to RPG Site’s 2024 guide. Regional quests can still build faction strength. |
| Associated companion | The companion associated with the city Rook saves avoids this decision’s hardened state. | The companion associated with the city becomes hardened and is unavailable for a substantial stretch. |
| Romance | There is no city-choice romance penalty for the companion associated with the city Rook saves. | Lucanis cannot be romanced if he becomes hardened. Neve can still be romanced, but her romance progresses more slowly. |
Hardened companions receive fewer approval gains from dialogue, stop using healing skills, and have some altered passive damage skills. Rook also has less influence over certain companion-quest decisions. EA confirms that all seven companions are potential romance partners and that players eventually commit to one; after committing, other companion romances are no longer available. RPG Site and EA’s romance guide describe these effects.
There is no single objectively correct city to save. Weigh which companion and romance route matters most to you, which city you want to preserve, and whether you are willing to rebuild the unaided city’s faction strength through regional quests.

Crossroads: complete Regrets of the Dread Wolf and decide how to approach Mythal
Regrets of the Dread Wolf leads Rook to Mythal. Rook can try to persuade her through dialogue or fight her; the practical difference is what her help opens later, rather than a simple moral right-or-wrong result.
- Persuade Mythal: Rook receives Mythal’s Essence and her pledge to help in the Heart of Corruption encounter. This route opens more ending options.
- Fight Mythal: Rook receives a simpler version of the Essence. It can still be used against Solas, but fewer ending options become available.
The Heart of Corruption also contributes to unlocking the secret post-credits scene. RPG Site’s guide describes the Mythal outcomes and their endgame relevance.

Before When Plans Align: finish quests you want to complete
When Plans Align is the point of no return for regional and companion quests. Starting it locks those activities, prevents further faction-strength gains and bond progression, and carries Rook onward into the finale. Before accepting the quest, finish any companion or regional content you still want to do. Both RPG Site and PowerPyx’s endings guide advise preparing before this stage.

Rook first chooses Davrin or Harding to lead a distraction team, then chooses Bellara or Neve to disable magical wards. These are not interchangeable party preferences: each selected companion is unavailable for the rest of the game after their assignment, but their outcomes differ.

- Distraction leader: PowerPyx’s documented route says this companion sacrifices themself. Its everyone-survives achievement instructions still include this sacrifice, so that label should not be read as a guarantee that every companion lives.
- Wards companion: This companion is taken away and rescued later, according to PowerPyx.
RPG Site and PowerPyx explain the assignments and their consequences.
The Last Gambit and finale: prepare the team and assign roles
Faction strength, whether companions have earned Hero of the Veilguard status, and whether they are assigned to roles suited to their capabilities all affect casualties and survival outcomes. RPG Site advises building at least moderate faction strength and completing companion quests; it also describes strengths relevant to ward protection, attacks on mages, and fighting large enemies. PowerPyx’s achievement route instead calls for three-star ratings with all factions, completed companion quests, and suitable role assignments. The guides use different thresholds and framing, so treat their recommendations as preparation guidance rather than a universal survival guarantee.
In The Dread Wolf Rises, Rook chooses a companion to help hold the line. The outcome is influenced by casualties from the preceding battle and faction strength. PowerPyx’s own example route includes Davrin’s death despite its everyone-survives achievement framing; use its instructions as a specific achievement walkthrough, not proof that every character survives. RPG Site and PowerPyx cover these endgame factors.
Choose how Rook deals with Solas
After the final battle, Rook can fight Solas, trick him, or try to convince him, subject to the choices and conditions Rook has met. Mythal’s Essence is required for the convince option. The Inquisition relationship answers supplied during character creation can also alter that scene. RPG Site

Quick Recap
Quick checklist before the point of no return
- Choose whether you want to prioritize Minrathous or Treviso and account for the unaided city’s vendor, faction, companion, and romance effects.
- Complete the regional and companion quests you want to finish before starting When Plans Align.
- Build faction strength and complete companion quests before the finale; stronger preparation improves readiness, but the cited guides do not give a single guaranteed threshold for every outcome.
- Consider each Isle of the Gods assignment as a lasting companion decision, not just a tactical preference.
- If you want the option to convince Solas, complete the Mythal route that grants Mythal’s Essence.
