Here, “character” means a named character represented by an unlockable Special Bot—not every member of Astro’s broader rescue crew. For all Special Bots, who they are, and where to find them, see the dated roster reference linked below.
What counts as an unlockable character in Astro Bot?
Astro Bot’s rescue crew includes ordinary Bots as well as recognizable PlayStation cameos represented by Special Bots, also called VIP Bots. PlayStation’s current Astro Bot game page describes 300 Bots to rescue. Separately, Team Asobi described over 150 PlayStation cameo characters in 2024; that launch-era cameo figure is not a count of all 300 Bots and should not be combined with later additions or transfers into a new total.

|---|---|---|---|
| 2B | NieR | Suck It Up | Level find |
| Abe | Oddworld | Fan Club | Level find |

How to unlock the different kinds of Special Bots
Rescue Bots in Astro Bot levels
Most character cameos are found by exploring levels and rescuing the Bot at its location. The July 2025 index above identifies the represented character, series, and level for each entry. Some discoveries are in postgame galaxies or seasonal content rather than the main progression.
Transfer four Special Bots from Astro’s Playroom
Four Special Bots can be found in Astro’s Playroom and transferred into Astro Bot to join the starting crew. This is a separate unlock route from rescuing Bots in Astro Bot levels. Team Asobi’s official worked example for finding Lady Maria shows the clue-based approach: in GPU Jungle’s Render Forest, stand on a plant near the Bloodborne Hunter Bot to reveal a capsule, then use the clock clue and enter 24.11.2015, the release date of the Bloodborne DLC featuring Lady Maria. That example explains one bot, not all four.

Postgame and update Bots
Team Asobi announced five Vicious Void challenge levels in February 2025, released weekly, with one new Special Bot in each. The free update requires completing the main game to access its content. The July 2025 Push Square index also covers postgame galaxies including Stellar Speedway and Vicious Void, as well as Winter Wonder, a festive postgame level with Special Bots and other items. These details describe the guide’s coverage as of its publication date.

The available official figures describe different scopes and dates: PlayStation’s current game page says 300 Bots are to be rescued, Team Asobi’s 2024 launch-era post says over 150 cameo characters, and the February 2025 update adds five Vicious Void Special Bots. Four more Special Bots can transfer from Astro’s Playroom. These figures do not establish one reconciled all-in total across ordinary Bots, named cameos, post-launch content, and transfers.

Astro Bot is a PS5-exclusive, single-player game, according to PlayStation’s game page. At announcement in May 2024, Team Asobi described six galaxies and over 80 levels; those were launch-period figures, not a statement of all later content. Sony’s September 2024 launch announcement frames the cameos as a tribute to three decades of PlayStation and cites the Lovestruck Lyricist as an homage to PaRappa the Rapper and the Yharnam Hunter as an homage to Bloodborne. PlayStation’s November 2024 feature on ten cameos offers more selected character context, but it is not a complete roster.
VIP items are not the same as unlocking a Bot
After rescuing VIP Bots, players can spend coins in the Gatcha Lab to unlock items associated with them. Returning a unique item to its VIP Bot triggers a special action. The item and animation are an extra collectible interaction; they are not the method for rescuing or unlocking the Bot itself.
