Nintendo’s September 12, 2025 Direct put the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. at the center, naming the next animated film The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and announcing Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Nintendo Switch. It also showed more of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and revealed a wide slate of Nintendo and partner games.
Mario’s 40th anniversary brought a new movie and two returning games
Shigeru Miyamoto opened the Direct with activities marking 40 years of Super Mario Bros.; the original game launched in Japan on September 13, 1985. The anniversary segment included the title announcement for a new animated film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and the return of two Wii-era adventures.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has different release dates by territory
Nintendo and Illumination announced the film’s title and an initial returning cast: Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto were named as producers; Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are returning as directors, with Matthew Fogel writing and Brian Tyler composing. The announcement lists release dates of April 3, 2026, in the US and many other markets, April 24 in Japan, and dates during April in select territories. Those dates are territory-specific, not a single worldwide opening day. Nintendo and Illumination’s release announcement has the initial details.
Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 came to Switch together or separately
Nintendo announced October 2, 2025, for the Switch release of both games. Players can get them together in the physical Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 collection or buy either game digitally through Nintendo eShop. Nintendo described enhanced resolution, an improved user interface, button-and-stick or motion controls, an in-game music player, and additional Storybook content. A free Nintendo Switch 2 update was announced to add 4K resolution support for both games.
