The headline news is that Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ free Ver. 3.0 update adds the resort hotel, Slumber Island and Resetti’s Reset Service to both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The separate, paid Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds hardware-specific features such as mouse controls, a microphone megaphone and online sessions for up to 12 players. You do not need the Switch 2 Edition to play the new 3.0 content.
What’s new in the free Animal Crossing 3.0 update?
Ver. 3.0 launched on January 15, 2026, and is available on both Nintendo Switch generations. Its additions are game content and convenience features—not Switch 2 Edition upgrades. Nintendo’s announcement and Japanese launch details give the January 15 launch date.
The Resort Hotel gives the pier a new job
Kapp’n’s family runs a hotel on your island’s pier. Decorate themed guest rooms, then help fulfill requests for items made with your island’s DIY specialties. Hotel tasks earn hotel tickets, which you can exchange for souvenirs and exclusive items in the hotel shop. It’s a repeatable activity loop: decorate, fulfill requests, collect tickets and spend them on rewards.
Slumber Island is a shared creative space
With Nintendo Switch Online, you can visit a dream island and terraform, build and decorate with friends. Nintendo describes three islands available for creating vacation paradises. The feature is aimed at collaborative design rather than simply visiting someone else’s finished island; online access requires Nintendo Switch Online.
#1 Best Overall
- Build your own paradise as you explore, create, and customize in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game.
- Switch 2 Edition: This game is the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. It includes the Nintendo Switch game plus upgrade pack, which includes enhancements for play on Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- Upgrade: You can purchase a Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade pack for this game (full version of game required to use this content; sold separately).
- If you and your friends all have the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, you can share your island in 12-player sessions online*—and with CameraPlay and GameChat** support, you can see and hear their reactions in real time!
Resetti can clear a cluttered island
Resetti’s Reset Service clears placed elements such as flowers and decorations, and lets you store collected items. Nintendo says the total storage capacity reaches 9,000 items, including trees, shrubs and flowers. This makes it possible to reset a larger area without treating everything removed as disposable.
Small changes reduce crafting and ordering friction
- Craft up to 10 of an item at once when you have the materials.
- Use items in home storage as DIY materials.
- Track hotel and Tom Nook requests in the DIY Recipes app.
- Order items obtained through the Pocket Camp linkage in Nook Shopping.
Nintendo lists these changes on its Animal Crossing: New Horizons update-history page.

- Collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools. Then, use what you create to give your island a personal touch
- Watch as the time of day and seasons match real life—even your hemisphere. Each day holds potential for surprises and discoveries
- Get to know the island residents, garden, fish, decorate, hunt for fossils, and more.
- Show off your paradise – Play on the same system with a total of 4 people, or play together online or over local wireless for fun with up to 8 players
LEGO items are in-game rewards, not a physical-product unlock
Ver. 3.0 adds LEGO-themed furniture and other items that can be purchased with Bells through Nook Shopping. Nintendo’s LEGO collaboration notice describes in-game content; owning physical LEGO products is not required to obtain it.
What does the Switch 2 Edition add?
The Switch 2 Edition is a separate paid edition for Nintendo Switch 2. Existing Switch owners can buy an upgrade pack to access its edition-specific features. These additions use Switch 2 hardware or expand online play; they are distinct from the hotel and other free 3.0 content. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition announcement lists the features.
