The company identified names and company email addresses in 2,606 records. News reports also described game-development files circulating online, but Game Freak’s notice did not authenticate each file or establish the scale and completeness of the broader leak.
What happened in the Game Freak hack?
In an official notice dated October 10, 2024, Game Freak said a third party accessed its server without authorization in August and that information about employees had leaked. The company’s statement is the primary confirmation of the breach and the personal-data disclosure: Game Freak’s notice.

Game Freak said it was contacting affected people individually. It also apologized for the concern and inconvenience caused. The company’s notice does not give details about how the attacker got access or how long the unauthorized access lasted.
What information was exposed?
Game Freak reported 2,606 personal-data records involving employees and contract workers, including former workers. The listed fields were names and company email addresses. The count refers to records, not necessarily to 2,606 current employees.

#1 Best Overall
The notice does not establish that passwords, financial information, or players’ Pokémon game accounts were among the exposed data. The confirmed disclosure described by Game Freak concerns employee and contractor information.
Were the leaked Pokémon games and files real?
Contemporaneous reports said source code, artwork, design documents, and other game-development materials were circulating online. Those reports establish that such claims were being made; they do not amount to Game Freak verifying every file. The Record reported that the authenticity of game-related materials remained unclear, while Nintendo Life covered early claims about source code and unreleased projects: The Record’s October 14, 2024 report and Nintendo Life’s October 13, 2024 report.
So claims about specific future games, features, or plans should be treated as unverified unless independently confirmed by the company. A file appearing online, or being described as internal, is not by itself proof that it is authentic, complete, or current.

Was the leak one terabyte?
Le Monde reported that online users claiming access described an archive of roughly one terabyte. That was an attributed online claim, not a size confirmed by Game Freak. The company’s notice does not provide a total archive size or a comprehensive inventory of any game-development files: Le Monde’s October 14, 2024 report.
How did Game Freak respond?
Game Freak said it had rebuilt and inspected the affected server and would strengthen security measures to help prevent a recurrence. Its published English translation states: “We have already rebuilt and inspected the server, and will strive to prevent recurrence by further strengthening our security measures.” The company also said it was contacting affected individuals; these steps are described in its official notice.
