The Elden Ring movie is an officially announced live-action adaptation from Bandai Namco Entertainment and A24, with Alex Garland writing and directing. Its announced global theatrical release date is March 3, 2028. Bandai Namco says production began in spring 2026 and that the film is being made for IMAX.
When does the Elden Ring movie come out?
Bandai Namco Entertainment’s April 20, 2026 announcement gives the film a global theatrical release date of March 3, 2028. That date is described as global; it does not establish when the film will open in every country. In a separate Japanese announcement dated April 21, 2026, Bandai Namco said Japanese release details would be announced later.

The same announcements say production began in spring 2026 and that the film is being filmed for IMAX. The publisher has not announced another release date or an alternative release plan in the material available.
Who is directing the Elden Ring movie?
Alex Garland is writing and directing the adaptation, according to Bandai Namco and A24’s May 22, 2025 announcement. Garland’s credits named in that announcement include Ex Machina, Civil War and Warfare.

The publisher’s cast announcement does not identify which game characters, if any, the performers will play. Character-role claims should therefore be treated as speculation unless confirmed by an official announcement.
What is the movie adapting?
Bandai Namco describes Elden Ring as an action RPG set in a dark-fantasy world. Its 2025 announcement says the game was created under the guidance of FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki and is based on a mythological story written by George R. R. Martin.
The official film announcement does not provide a synopsis. The game’s world and mythology are the confirmed source material, but the film’s plot, point of view and specific events have not been disclosed.
What is confirmed—and what remains unknown?
| Confirmed | Not announced in the official material reviewed |
|---|---|
| Live-action adaptation from Bandai Namco Entertainment and A24 | Film synopsis or specific story outline |
| Alex Garland writing and directing | Cast members’ character assignments |
| Global theatrical date of March 3, 2028 | A separate Japanese release date |
| Production began in spring 2026; the film is being made for IMAX | Additional release alternatives or competing film versions |
These distinctions matter because a cast list does not confirm character roles, and a global date does not settle every territory’s local schedule.
