You can start live streaming on YouTube with a phone, computer webcam, console, or streaming encoder—often without buying new equipment. First confirm your channel is eligible, then choose the setup that fits what you want to broadcast. If you plan to stream gameplay, screen capture, or a produced show, test your encoder, upload bandwidth, audio, and YouTube preview before going live.
How do I start live streaming on YouTube?
- Check eligibility. YouTube’s general live-stream guidance says your channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Mobile streaming has additional requirements, including at least 50 subscribers. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements because eligibility and features can change.
- Choose a streaming method. Use mobile for a quick update away from your desk, webcam for a simple computer-camera broadcast, an encoder for gameplay or screen capture, or a console’s built-in broadcast option for console gameplay.
- Enable live streaming. Follow YouTube’s activation flow. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until the event is about to start.
- Prepare your content and connection. Confirm what viewers will see and hear, check your outbound upload speed, and leave enough bandwidth for a stable stream.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Check the preview, picture, sound, stream destination, and any overlays before broadcasting publicly.
- Go live and monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on audio and video throughout. When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop your encoder or device broadcast.
What do I need to live stream on YouTube?
At minimum, you need an eligible YouTube channel, a supported device or encoder for your chosen method, and an internet connection capable of sustaining the stream’s upload bitrate. A camera, dedicated microphone, paid encoder, and elaborate lighting are not prerequisites for every broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say expensive equipment is not necessary; start with what you have and upgrade only when you know what is limiting your setup.
Pick the route that matches the content
| Method | Best suited to | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Vlogging, live updates, or filming while away from a desk | Mobile eligibility and device requirements apply. YouTube’s mobile help page lists Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ and a 50-subscriber minimum; verify current availability and requirements before relying on them. |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer-camera stream | You need a computer with a webcam. YouTube describes this as a quick way to go live. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio/video equipment | You configure encoder software or hardware with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. This route gives more production control. |
| Console | Broadcasting console gameplay directly | Setup depends on the console maker; follow the device’s current instructions. |
Optional equipment that can help
- Webcam: useful for a computer-camera stream or a face-cam in an encoder setup. A webcam for live streaming is optional if your phone or existing camera already covers the shot you need.
- Microphone: an external mic can be useful when voice clarity matters. A USB microphone for streaming is not required if your current audio is clear enough.
- Headphones: helpful for hearing game audio, monitoring sound, or avoiding speaker feedback. Headphones for streaming are a practical accessory, not a platform requirement.
- Phone support: a phone tripod for live streaming can keep a mobile shot steady, but it is a convenience rather than a YouTube requirement.
Do I need 50 subscribers to live stream on YouTube?
Not for every method. YouTube’s 50-subscriber minimum applies to mobile live streaming, not the general eligibility rules for webcam, encoder, or console streaming. The general guidance instead specifies channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. Because YouTube can revise rules, check the official eligibility page for your chosen method before scheduling a broadcast.
Can I live stream from my phone?
Yes, if your channel meets YouTube’s mobile-specific requirements and your device is supported. YouTube lists a minimum of 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ on its mobile live-streaming help page. Activating mobile live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. These platform rules and supported-device details may change, so check the live help page before planning an event around them.

Do I need a webcam or encoder?
No. You need a method that can capture and send the content you want to stream. A webcam is convenient for a simple camera broadcast from a computer. An encoder is the more flexible option for gameplay, screen capture, overlays, or external video and audio hardware. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console approaches; the right choice depends on the content and the production control you want.
How to set up an encoder stream
- Enable live streaming early. Complete YouTube’s activation steps before event day; first-time access may take up to 24 hours.
- Create or select the stream. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room and set up or select the event. Refer to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder. Use the values shown for that stream in Live Control Room. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen, post it, or share it publicly.
- Configure the encoder and start sending. Choose the video and audio sources, output resolution, and bitrate your setup and connection can reliably sustain. Use a test event or an unlisted stream to check the signal.
- Check YouTube’s preview before going live. Wait for the encoder feed to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm that the correct picture and sound are reaching YouTube, then start the event using the workflow shown there.
- End the event cleanly. End the broadcast in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer stream will be archived in the same way.
What upload speed and bitrate should I use?
For a live broadcast, upload capacity matters because your device is sending video and audio to YouTube. YouTube recommends keeping the combined streaming bitrate below the available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. That recommendation applies to the stream’s total outgoing bitrate, including a backup stream if you use one. Download speed alone does not show whether your connection can upload reliably, and other people or devices sharing your network can reduce the bandwidth available to the broadcast. Check your outbound speed under conditions similar to the event, then choose an encoder bitrate with room to spare.

There is no single bitrate that suits every stream: the right setting depends on the output you choose, the encoder, and the upload capacity available to you. Avoid setting a bitrate that consumes the entire measured upload rate. If the stream stutters or drops frames, lower the output bitrate or resolution, reduce competing network traffic, or use a more stable connection, then test again.
How to rehearse before a live event
For an encoder event, YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Treat those timings as a preparation baseline, not a substitute for an earlier full test if the event matters.

- If you configured a failover encoder, test that playback can roll over to it before depending on it for a live event.
Should I stream vertically or horizontally?
Choose the shape that suits the content and how viewers will watch. YouTube’s current guidance describes vertical live streams as eligible to appear in the Shorts feed and as offering a mobile full-screen viewing experience. Live Control Room workflows may offer horizontal and vertical outputs with layout choices such as center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked. Availability and features can vary, so check YouTube’s vertical live-stream guidance and the options shown in your account before promising a particular layout or discovery outcome.

Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube may remove a stream or restrict live-stream access when its rules are violated. Check the current rules and your stream’s privacy and audience settings before broadcasting, especially if the video includes other people, private information, or material you do not own. Do not use another channel to evade an active live-stream restriction.
