When Sony showed the first PlayStation Portable, a friend of former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden who worked at Nintendo texted him: “You bastards.” Layden recalled the exchange in an interview with The Expansion Pass, as reported by GamesRadar+. He could not pin down the year, placing it around 2003, 2004 or 2005.
What did the Nintendo employee say?
Layden said his Nintendo-employed friend sent him a text reading “You bastards” after Sony showed the first PSP. Layden replied, “Hey, bro, you know, it’s all fun and games,” according to GamesRadar+’s account of the interview.
The friend is not named in the report, and Layden describes a private message from one person—not an official statement or reaction from Nintendo.
When did Sony show the PSP?
Layden was uncertain about the date. Recalling the first PSP showing, he said: “2003, ’04, ’05, something like that.” The anecdote therefore belongs broadly to the period when Sony was preparing to enter handheld gaming; it should not be treated as a definitively dated 2004 event.

Why did Sony’s handheld debut matter?
Nintendo had a long-established position in portable gaming through the Game Boy line, while Sony was bringing its PlayStation identity into the category. The PSP and Nintendo DS also took distinct design approaches: the PSP carried PlayStation-branded gaming into a portable format, while the DS used two screens and a touch interface.
GamesRadar+ reports lifetime sales of more than 154 million Nintendo DS units and 76 million PSP units. Those figures give a sense of the platforms’ reported scale, but they do not by themselves explain their differing performance or establish what Layden’s unnamed friend thought beyond the text.

What did Layden say about the PSP’s challenges?
In the same retrospective conversation, Layden said the PSP “did reasonably well,” but that its operating system was hacked and the system could be jailbroken relatively easily. He also pointed to software piracy as a challenge. These are Layden’s recollections and assessment, not a quantified measure of piracy’s effect on sales.
Layden separately highlighted Monster Hunter’s cooperative play as part of the PSP’s social adoption in Japan. His comment offers a perspective on how people used the handheld, rather than proof that one game or feature alone drove its popularity.
