Exo One is a single-player traversal and exploration game built around piloting an alien craft with gravity and momentum. Critics generally praise its movement, landscapes, and sound, but its quiet pace and relatively light conventional gameplay make it a better fit for players seeking atmosphere and discovery than for those looking for combat or a tightly explained story.
What kind of game is Exo One?
Developed by Exbleative, Exo One sends you across desolate alien worlds in a strange craft that can roll, glide, and fly. Rather than relying on conventional combat, its central activity is learning to use terrain and gravity: build speed on a hillside, catch a thermal updraft, or launch from a mountain to gain height and carry momentum forward.
The journey points toward a distant blue beam and is framed as humanity’s first flight beyond the solar system, unfolding across space and time. The premise is deliberately mysterious rather than a fully explicit science-fiction narrative. Diffused visuals, otherworldly sound effects, and an electric-guitar-led soundtrack are central to the experience, not merely decoration.

Movement that rewards learning by feel
Reviewers often single out the unusual craft and the satisfaction of building speed and airtime. The appeal is less about mastering a familiar action-game toolkit and more about understanding how momentum, slopes, and gravity work together. TheGamer described the contrast as “As confusing as this might sound, Exo One is every bit relaxing as it is intense.”

Atmosphere and audiovisual design
The game’s sweeping environments and soundscape help make traversal feel like a journey through unfamiliar places. PC Invasion called it “Intriguing and startlingly original” and described its experience as “quiet, meditative” and “foreign and mysterious.” Eurogamer’s line, reproduced in Steam’s review capsule, calls it “by turns serene, satisfying and surprisingly exhilarating.”
What are the main caveats?
The same slow, open-ended quality that attracts some players may frustrate others. Review excerpts note uneven pacing, bugs, and a story some found lackluster or intrusive. One critic wished for a story-skip option and level selection after completion; another described a single weaker level as a blemish on an otherwise strong experience. These are reviewer assessments, not guarantees that every player will encounter the same problems.

It is also not a conventional puzzle game in the sense of a dense sequence of logic challenges, nor is it an action game centered on combat. KeenGamer’s review emphasizes the appeal of flying between planets “Leaving the story aside,” while GameByte called it “almost a perfect sci-fi puzzle game” but said one poor level let it down. If you need brisk progression, substantial mechanical variety, or a clearly explained plot, watch gameplay first or try an available access option before buying.
How well reviewed is Exo One?
Metacritic’s PC critic page showed an 81/100 Metascore, labeled “Generally Favorable,” when accessed in 2026. The page displayed 19 critic reviews; its displayed sentiment breakdown listed 14 positive, 2 mixed, and 0 negative, so those categories should not be treated as a complete accounting of all reviews shown.

Steam’s English-language user-review snapshot, also accessed in 2026, showed 90% positive from 3,310 reviews. Its recent-review panel showed 95% positive from 22 reviews over the preceding 30 days. Both figures can change as users post reviews; they describe snapshots, not permanent ratings. An Everyeye review from 2021 estimated that the game could be completed in less than three hours, but that is one reviewer’s estimate rather than a verified playtime figure.

The listings consulted identify Exo One on PC through Steam, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. The PC and Xbox listings date its release to November 18, 2021; the US PlayStation listing gives June 27, 2024 for PS4 and PS5.
