“Expedition Journals” can mean two different things. In history, it refers to firsthand diaries and field records kept during exploration, travel, scientific, or military journeys. In video-game searches, it often means the collectible journal entries associated with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The game’s physical “Expeditioner’s Journal” is a separate 48-page artbook, not a confirmed complete print transcription of those in-game entries.

Where to read the actual entries
If you are trying to read every journal entry from the game, look for an in-game collectible guide, a spoiler-marked transcript, or a walkthrough that lists entries by area and progression point. The community question “Where can I read all the journals by the expeditions?” reflects that search intent, but it is not itself an authoritative inventory. A complete list should identify the entry name, location, and the point at which it becomes available; do not assume that a merchandise page contains the text.
What the Collector’s Edition book contains
The official Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Collector’s Edition page calls its included book “The Expeditioner’s Journal – a 48-page hardcover artbook.” That wording establishes the format and page count, but it does not say that the book reproduces all collectible journal entries. Treat it as an artbook unless a specific edition description or preview confirms otherwise.
The same official page currently labels the Collector’s Edition sold out and says the publisher cannot promise a restock. Resale listings and regional availability can change, so verify stock, platform, and region before paying a premium.

A separate artbook announced for 2026
UDON Entertainment announced an English-language hardcover, The Art of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, on March 16, 2026. The announcement describes it as a large-format book of more than 300 pages focused on the game’s creative process. It is distinct from the Collector’s Edition’s 48-page Expeditioner’s Journal and is not described as a transcription of the in-game collectibles.
How to evaluate a game-journal guide
- Use the full game title: search for “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 journal collectibles” rather than the unqualified phrase.
- Check spoiler labeling: journal text can reveal story details, areas, and late-game events.
- Prefer location-based lists: entries may be easier to miss when a guide organizes them only by chapter or character.
- Separate text from merchandise: an artbook, soundtrack, or steelbook is not evidence that it includes the collectible entries.
What historical expedition journals are
Historical expedition journals are not a single standardized genre. They can combine daily narrative with practical records made for navigation, science, administration, or later publication. The American Philosophical Society’s descriptions of William Dunbar’s 1804–1805 Red and Ouachita Rivers expeditions mention daily observations, route descriptions, coordinates, and a thermometrical log. The same bound volume includes Zebulon Pike’s account of a Mississippi geography expedition from 1805–1806.

Archival collections can also preserve material beyond written diary pages. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Library describes the Dorsett-Morse plant exploration collection as 17 bound journals and 13 folders dating from 1928–1931. Its records include daily accounts, itineraries, photographs, samples, maps, charts, diagrams, pamphlets, and correspondence. That inventory describes one collection; it is not a universal checklist for every expedition journal.
Common evidence types
- Narrative: daily events, encounters, weather, health, and decisions.
- Route data: place names, distances, coordinates, itineraries, and crossings.
- Technical measurements: temperature readings, elevations, observations, or specimen notes.
- Visual and material records: sketches, maps, photographs, samples, and diagrams.
- Attached documents: correspondence, pamphlets, permits, and later annotations.
Why the edition matters
A “journal” may mean an original manuscript, a diplomatic transcription, an edited scholarly edition, or a later paraphrase. Those forms can differ in spelling, omissions, dates, and explanatory notes.

The National Park Service’s account of Joseph Whitehouse provides a clear example. Whitehouse’s original journal begins on May 14, 1804, and ends abruptly on November 6, 1805. A later expanded paraphrase covers May 14, 1804, through April 6, 1806. Both versions are held by Chicago’s Newberry Library. A reader citing “the Whitehouse journal” should therefore name the version being used.
For the Lewis and Clark expedition, the National Endowment for the Humanities describes an online edition of the journals. An online scholarly edition may offer searchable text and editorial context that a scan of a manuscript does not, but it remains an edition with its own transcription and annotation choices.

How to choose a historical journal or edition
- Identify the author and expedition. Names such as Dunbar, Pike, Whitehouse, or Lewis and Clark are more precise than a generic “expedition journal.”
- Confirm the dates covered. Compare the stated range with the manuscript’s actual beginning and ending; damaged or incomplete records are common.
- Determine the format. Check whether you are reading an original scan, transcription, edited volume, or paraphrase.
- Check the repository. Libraries, museums, and national institutions may hold multiple versions or related folders.
- Match the evidence to your purpose. Narrative is useful for lived experience; route data, measurements, maps, and specimens support geographic or scientific reconstruction.
- Read editorial notes. Modern place names, altered spelling, missing pages, and inserted explanations should be distinguished from the author’s words.
Keeping the two meanings separate
The historical and game meanings share a name but answer different questions. A historical journal is primary-source evidence whose authority depends on provenance and edition. A Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 collectible is part of a fictional world, while the Collector’s Edition book is a physical art product. Search with the author, expedition, repository, or full game title attached to the phrase so that you reach the right material.
