expressui.dll is a Nero application component, usually associated with NeroVision, Nero Vision, Nero Video, or Nero Platinum. If Windows reports that expressui.dll is missing or cannot load, repair or reinstall the exact Nero installation that requested it rather than copying a downloaded DLL into System32.
What this file actually does
expressui.dll is a third-party application DLL used by Nero’s video-authoring software. Historical Nero installations associated the file with NeroVision, originally linked with Ahead Software AG, while later public records associate it with Nero Video and Nero Platinum installations.
It is not a normal Windows component. There is no reliable evidence that Microsoft distributes it as part of Windows 10 or Windows 11, so Windows system repair tools normally will not recreate it.
The file should normally be beside the Nero files that use it, inside a Nero installation directory. Historical installations used paths similar to:

The exact folder depends on the Nero release and whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not assume that every copy has the same version, size, hash, or architecture. Treat expressui.dll and the Nero executable that loads it as a matched pair.

Reported messages include Cannot find C:Program Files (x86)NeroNero PlatinumNero VisionExpressUI.dll and This application failed to start because ExpressUI.dll was not found. The wording can vary by Windows version and Nero release.
Fix expressui.dll errors
1. Identify the Nero program that is failing
Start with the application named in the error instead of searching the whole disk for a replacement file.
- Close the error dialog.
- Check the title bar and message for
Nero Video,NeroVision,Nero Vision, orNero Platinum. - Right-click the shortcut that fails and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Nero.
- If Nero is not listed, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and check there.
- If the program is running long enough to appear, open Task Manager, right-click the Nero process, and select Open file location.
Check whether the path is under C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86). That provides a useful architecture clue, but the installed executable and its dependencies are more reliable than the folder name.
If the error names another DLL, record that name exactly. An expressui.dll message is different from an MSVC runtime error, and the second problem may need a separate repair.
2. Repair Nero from Windows
Some Nero installers register a repair option.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the Nero product.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and open Nero again.
If Windows does not offer Repair, use Control Panel:
- Press
Windowsand typeControl Panel. - Open Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Nero entry.
- Choose Change or Repair.
- Complete the Nero maintenance wizard.
- Restart the computer.
Test the same Nero shortcut after the repair. If it opens without the DLL message, the missing component was restored. If the repair option is unavailable or fails, continue with a full reinstall.

3. Reinstall the matching Nero product
Reinstalling the application is the safest and most likely fix because it restores expressui.dll together with the Nero files it expects.
Before uninstalling, back up video projects, templates, custom presets, and any files stored in Nero-specific folders.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the installed Nero product.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from Nero’s official support download center or its official previous-version archive.
- Select the same Nero edition and release when possible.
- If Nero requests licensing information, use the serial number or Nero account associated with that product.
- Run the installer by right-clicking it and choosing Run as administrator.
- Accept the default installation folder unless your organization uses a documented alternative.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Launch Nero Video or NeroVision from its new shortcut.
Nero’s older products can use a serial-number system, while newer products generally use a Nero account. Current installers may not support every obsolete NeroVision release, so an older installation may require the matching official archive installer.
Do not copy expressui.dll from another computer or another Nero release. The replacement may have different exports, dependencies, or architecture and can create a second startup failure.
4. Remove conflicting Nero remnants when a normal reinstall fails
A failed uninstall can leave old files, registry entries, or shared components behind. Those remnants can cause a new Nero installation to load an incompatible file.
First try the normal uninstall process. If reinstalling still produces the same error:
- Back up Nero projects and user data.
- Uninstall every Nero component that belongs to the affected installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Use Nero’s official FirstAidKit only if Nero’s instructions identify it as appropriate for your product.
- Restart again after the cleanup.
- Install one intended Nero version from the official installer.
The cleanup utility removes Nero-related files, folders, and registry entries. It should not be the first step on a machine where projects or custom settings have not been backed up.

5. Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A missing file may have been removed by Windows Security or another antivirus product. Do not automatically restore it. First confirm that the Nero installation came from a genuine official installer and scan the computer.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item that names

- If the file came from an untrusted installer, leave it quarantined and remove that installation.
- If the file came from a verified Nero installation, scan the installer and the system before considering Restore.
- Reinstall Nero instead of restoring the file when possible.
Microsoft warns that restoring a threat can cause it to be detected again. A file with the correct name is not automatically safe, so reinstalling from a trusted Nero installer is preferable to approving an isolated DLL.

Some Nero releases depend on Microsoft Visual C++ runtime files. Do not assume that every expressui.dll error is caused by Visual C++. Look at the complete dialog or Event Viewer entry first.
If the error names a runtime such as an MSVC DLL:
- Open Microsoft’s current Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
- Check whether the Nero application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Install the matching package.
- Remember that 32-bit Nero needs the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Nero again.
If you cannot establish the required architecture, repairing or reinstalling Nero is safer than mixing runtime packages at random. Install the runtime supplied or required by the specific Nero release where its documentation identifies one.
7. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
These commands repair protected Windows components, not normally third-party Nero files. They are useful when other Windows applications also fail or when the problem began with broader system corruption, but SFC should not be expected to recreate expressui.dll.
- Save your work.
- Press
Windows, typeCommand Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Nero again.
A successful DISM or SFC result means Windows found no remaining repair issue or repaired protected system files. It does not prove that the Nero installation is complete. If Nero still reports the same error, return to the Nero repair or reinstall procedure.

8. Use System Restore when the failure follows a recent change
System Restore can help when expressui.dll stopped working immediately after an update, driver installation, software removal, or other system change.

- Press
Windows + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press
Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. If no suitable restore point exists, reinstall Nero instead.

Manual DLL copying is unsafe for this error:
- The file may need to be beside
NeroVision.exeor another Nero executable. - A DLL from a different Nero release may export incompatible functions.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch can produce a “not designed to run on Windows” message.
- The file may depend on several other Nero components.
- A downloaded replacement may contain malware.
Do not download expressui.dll from random DLL websites. Those files can be the wrong release, wrong architecture, modified, or incomplete, and copying one into System32 often leaves the original Nero installation broken.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the COM registration entry point documented by Microsoft, commonly DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that expressui.dll is an independently registered ActiveX or COM component.
Running a command such as this is therefore not a general repair:
regsvr32 expressui.dll
It may return an entry-point error or create the impression that registration, rather than the Nero installation, is the problem. Use regsvr32 only when the application’s documentation specifically identifies the DLL as a COM server and provides the correct registration command.
If expressui.dll exists but Nero still will not start
Check the following in order:
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Confirm that it is inside the active Nero installation folder.
- Check the file’s Digital Signatures tab when available.
- Compare the folder with the executable named in the shortcut.
- Confirm that old and new Nero folders are not being mixed.
- Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the first failed module or dependency.
- Check whether the error names an MSVC runtime or another DLL.
- Verify that the user account has permission to read and execute the Nero folder.
- Test Nero with a new Windows user profile if only one profile fails.
- Reinstall the exact Nero build if the file remains present but cannot load.
A file that exists but fails to load usually indicates corruption, a missing dependency, permissions, or an architecture mismatch rather than a simple missing-file problem.
Driver checks are secondary
A display or media driver problem can affect Nero’s video features, but it does not normally explain a missing expressui.dll by itself. Update drivers only after repairing the Nero installation and identifying evidence that a driver change triggered the failure.

Use Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates to review available driver updates. You can also open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the relevant device, and select Update driver.

Is expressui.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence supports that conclusion. It is associated with Nero’s video-authoring software and should normally be restored through the Nero installation.
Which programs use expressui.dll?
Historical records associate it with NeroVision and Nero Vision. Later records associate it with Nero Video and Nero Platinum components.
Is there one universal version of the file?
No. Different Nero releases use different builds, and public records identify both historical Nero Vision files and a later Nero Platinum 2019 copy. Do not mix them.

Only after verifying its provenance and scanning the installer and system. Reinstalling Nero from its official source is safer when it is available.
What is the definitive fix?
Repair or reinstall the exact Nero product and release that requested the file. If the error remains, identify the first dependency named by the complete error or Event Viewer rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
