expsrv.dll is a genuine Microsoft runtime file called Visual Basic for Applications Runtime – Expression Service. If Windows says it is missing, corrupt, or could not be loaded, repair the application that requested it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The correct fix depends mainly on the path shown in the error:
- A path under
C:WindowsSystem32points toward the Windows-shipped Visual Basic 6 runtime. - A path under
Microsoft SharedOFFICE14,OFFICE15, orOFFICE16points toward an Office-managed copy. - A path inside a program’s own folder usually means that application was damaged or incompletely installed.
Microsoft documents expsrv.dll as part of the supported Visual Basic 6 runtime files shipped with Windows. The runtime is 32-bit, even on 64-bit Windows, where it runs through WOW64. It is associated with VBA and the legacy Visual Basic runtime, not exclusively with Office or the Visual Basic development environment.
Before repairing: read the full error path
Do not start by searching for the filename alone. Write down the complete path from the message and note which application was launching.

Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because expsrv.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The application has failed to start because expsrv.dll was not found.”
- “Failed to load expsrv.dll.”
- “The file expsrv.dll is missing or corrupt.”
- “Cannot find
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedOFFICE14expsrv.dll.” - “The procedure entry point could not be found.”
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows.”
The wording gives clues, but the path gives the strongest clue. A missing file, a damaged file, a wrong architecture, and a missing dependency can all produce similar messages.
If the error appears only with one old program, repair that program first. If it appears while opening Word, Excel, Access, or an Office add-in, repair Office. If several older programs fail and the path is in System32, repair Windows components.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
This is the safest first repair when the error appears in one program or the path points into that program’s installation folder.
Use Windows application repair
- Right-click Start.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps and Features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application and choose Advanced options when available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Not every traditional desktop program provides a Windows repair button. If there is no Repair option, open the application’s own installer from its original source and look for Repair, Modify, or Reinstall.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A successful repair should let the same program launch without the expsrv.dll message. If the error remains, restart Windows before testing again. Some older installers do not replace shared runtime files until after a reboot.
Reinstall from the original vendor
If repair is unavailable:
- Save the program’s documents and settings if necessary.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer supplied by the software publisher.
- If the program came on installation media, use that media rather than a DLL archive.
- Restart again and test the application.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function if it provides one. This checks the game’s own files without placing an unrelated copy of expsrv.dll beside the executable.
If the same installer fails while trying to register expsrv.dll, do not immediately run regsvr32. Some old Visual Basic deployment packages incorrectly attempt to register runtime DLLs that are not self-registering. Look for an updated installer from the application publisher. If none exists, the publisher needs to correct the setup package or document a supported workaround.
Fix 2: Repair Microsoft Office or its related component
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus download time

- Select Repair.
Microsoft describes Online Repair as the more complete option. Quick Repair is faster, but it may not replace a damaged Office component. Use Quick Repair first only if you need a shorter repair attempt; use Online Repair if the error remains.
Restart Windows after Office repair. Then test the exact Office program or add-in that produced the message.
A 64-bit Office installation can have an Office-managed copy that differs from the Windows-shipped Visual Basic runtime. Do not copy a file from System32 into an Office folder. If the problem began after removing Office, Access, or an Access Database Engine component, reinstall the matching Office component and architecture instead.
Fix 3: Install Windows updates, then repair system components
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use this path when the message names C:WindowsSystem32expsrv.dll, when several older programs fail, or when Windows reports that the file is corrupt.
Install pending updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no immediate update is offered.
Updates can repair protected Windows components and servicing files. If the error remains, run DISM followed by SFC.
Run DISM and SFC in the correct order
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends DISM first and SFC second. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC may need, while SFC checks protected system files.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the problem may not be a protected Windows file. SFC does not repair every Office-private or application-private copy of expsrv.dll.

Also check available disk space and disk health. If Windows still cannot repair its component store, System Restore or an in-place Windows repair may be appropriate. Avoid registry cleaners and unofficial “DLL repair” utilities.
Running these commands manually is useful, but it can be difficult to tell which component changed when the error persists. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing reported problems, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and an application-specific error still requires repairing or reinstalling that application.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine before replacing anything
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
If the error began immediately after a security scan, the file may have been quarantined. That does not prove the file was malicious, and the familiar filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe.

- Check whether the detection came from a trusted installation.
If the file was removed from a trusted Microsoft or application installation, repair the parent application first. Restore a quarantined file only when you have verified both the originating application and the detection with the security vendor. Do not repeatedly restore a file that returns to quarantine.

Fix 5: Confirm the 32-bit and 64-bit situation
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
expsrv.dll belongs to the 32-bit Visual Basic runtime. A 32-bit file appearing on 64-bit Windows is normal for this legacy runtime. Windows uses WOW64 to run 32-bit applications.
Do not assume that the System32 name means the file must be 64-bit. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native system directory, but 32-bit compatibility and filesystem redirection affect how older programs locate their runtime files.
Use the architecture of the requesting program and the path in the error as your guide:
- A 32-bit legacy program needs its compatible 32-bit runtime.
- Office needs the copy managed by its own installation.
- A program folder may require the exact build supplied by that program’s installer.
- A 64-bit Office installation may not use the same file location as 32-bit Office.
Do not replace the file with a 64-bit DLL, and do not copy a file from another computer merely because the filename matches. Even a file with the same name can have a different build, dependencies, or intended location.
The Visual Basic 6 development environment is a separate matter from the runtime. Repairing a runtime component does not mean that the old development environment is supported or repaired.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 unless the vendor specifically requires it
Time needed: 2–10 minutes
regsvr32 is for DLLs and ActiveX controls that expose a registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer. A runtime DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM component.
If an old installer displays an error that DllRegisterServer was not found, that generally means the installer tried to register a file that does not support that operation. Running commands such as these is unlikely to fix the underlying problem:

regsvr32 expsrv.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32expsrv.dll
It can also introduce confusion by mixing 32-bit and 64-bit registration tools. Do not register expsrv.dll simply because a DLL error occurred.
Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor explicitly identifies the file as a self-registering component and provides the correct command for that program. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the application.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when there is a separate device problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A driver update is not the normal fix for a missing expsrv.dll. Do not install graphics, chipset, or printer drivers just because this filename appears in an error.
Check drivers only if the same application also reports a separate device or hardware failure, or if Device Manager shows an unrelated warning.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Printers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the device manufacturer.
- If the problem began after a driver change, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and retest the hardware-dependent application.
Manually hunting through driver versions can obscure the real expsrv.dll problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the application that owns expsrv.dll.
Do not use Windows Features as a random DLL repair
Time needed: 2–5 minutes
Windows Features does not provide a general switch that restores expsrv.dll.
You can open the feature list by following:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
Alternatively, open Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off.
Do not enable or disable features at random to solve this error. The legacy Visual Basic runtime is handled through Windows and the responsible application, not by selecting an unrelated optional feature. If a particular vendor installer explicitly requires a Windows feature, follow that vendor’s documented requirement instead.
What the error wording means
“Missing” or “not found”
Windows could not locate the requested file in the location or search paths used by the application. The file may have been removed, the application may be pointing to the wrong folder, or the installation may be incomplete.
“Could not be loaded”
The file may exist but fail to initialize. Possible causes include corruption, an incompatible copy, a missing dependent DLL, or a damaged parent application.

“Not designed to run on Windows”
This often indicates corruption or an incompatible file format rather than a simple missing-file problem. Repair the owning application and confirm the architecture before replacing anything.
“DllRegisterServer was not found”
The installer attempted to register a DLL that does not expose the required registration entry point. This is usually an installer defect, not proof that the Windows registry is damaged.

Frequently asked questions
Is expsrv.dll safe?
It is a legitimate Microsoft component, but a filename is not authentication. A malicious file can use the same name. Trust the file only in a trusted Windows, Office, or application installation and verify suspicious detections with your security software.
Is expsrv.dll part of Windows or Office?
It can be associated with both. Microsoft lists it among Windows-shipped Visual Basic 6 runtime files, while Office can ship its own VBA-related copy. The path identifies which installation needs repair.
Why is a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows?
The legacy Visual Basic runtime remains 32-bit. Older 32-bit programs run through WOW64 on 64-bit Windows. That is expected and is not, by itself, evidence of a bad file.
Should I download expsrv.dll from a DLL website?
No. A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to the wrong architecture, have the wrong build, or lack required dependencies. It may also hide damage in the application or Office installation. Use Windows Update, DISM and SFC, Office repair, or the original application installer instead.
Recommended Free Tools
Will sfc /scannow always restore it?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It may not repair an Office-private or application-private copy. If SFC reports no problem but the error remains, follow the path and repair the responsible application.
Is there a universal latest version?
No. The correct file depends on the Windows, Office, or application build. Do not replace it based on a version number copied from an unrelated computer or file index.
What if the error returns after reinstalling?
Record the exact path again. Check antivirus history, confirm whether the installer is an obsolete Visual Basic package, and determine whether the application is 32-bit. A recurring registration failure may be an installer defect rather than a Windows failure.
When should I contact the vendor?
Contact the application vendor when its installer repeatedly fails, tries to register expsrv.dll, or restores the error after every reinstall. Provide the exact error text, full path, Windows edition, application version, and whether antivirus quarantined a file. The vendor may need to issue a corrected installer rather than have you copy a DLL manually.
